Ma Long's think tank for 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games - Coaches Zhang Lei and Qin Zhijian
On Aug 15, Beijing Morning Post reported that Coach Zhang Lei invited Coach Qin Zhijian to visit Team Beijing training center and discussed the plan to prepare Ma Long for 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Last week, Beijing Administration of Sports announced that Coach Zhang Lei is no longer Chair of Beijing Table Tennis and Badminton Administration Center. Coach Zhang Lei told Beijing Morning Post that he resigned the administrative job in order to fully devote his time as the head coach of Team Beijing. He clarified that it has nothing to do with his evaluation or the reformation of the General Administration of Sports.
Coach Qin Zhijian, former Ma Long's personal coach and former head coach of China National Team, has left China National Team for more than a year as the consequence of 2017 China Open incident. It is reported that many teams including Japan National Team, Beijing and Jiangsu (where Qin Zhijian is from) Provincial Team offered him coach position while he has not taken any yet.
During the visit to Team Beijing, Qin Zhijian told Beijing Morning Post, "Coach Zhang saw Ma Long growing up since a kid. I saw him growing from a young player to a Grand Slam winner at China National Team. Coach Zhang and I know each other for years. We discussed a lot today and hopefully we can help Ma Long from many aspects." Coach Qin said he paid attention to Ma Long's health and results during the past year, "I cared about his injuries and physical recoveries. When he played internationally, I watched sometimes, especially watched how he performed during the match." "Ma Long fulfilled his goal as Grand Slam winner at Rio Olympic Games. Now we need to determine the next goal, the extent of dedication and commitment. Ma Long has to spend some of his time and energy with his family now and we need to consider how to balance his table tennis career with personal life." Coach Qin as well as Coach Zhang shared their experiences in work-life balance with Ma Long, "Being his coach for so many years, I also talk with him about things off the court. Our minds are in sync." In terms of challenges from younger players, he thought Ma Long knows what to do. "He was challenging elder players when he was young. He understands the competition well. Most importantly, Ma Long can better himself. That's one of the keys that he can reach the height he is now."
Coach Zhang Lei told Beijing Morning Post, "2018 Asian Games will start soon, which means it is half-way of the current Olympic cycle. As provincial team coach, I have to try my best to make good use of the remaining two years. We invited Coach Qin from Jiangsu and we have the same goal - to make our contributions to Chinese Table Tennis". "First, we will work on injury prevention. Ma Long is turning 30 this year. As Coach Qin said, the biggest challenge for elder players is rehabilitation. Second, physical strengths. Current development of table tennis demands speed and power, which rely on physical strengths. In addition, his techniques and tactics cannot decline but need to improve. It is not easy for elder players. Ma Long has developed a mature system of techniques and tactics. It is harder for him to improve compared to younger players."
Ma Long will meet with two coaches after Bulgaria Open and Czech Open to discuss the preparation plan. Coach Zhang Lei said, "2019 WTTC and 2020 Olympic Games are the most important. We believe the preparation plan will help him."

On Aug 16, Ma Long was upset by Liam Pitchford by 3-4 (11:7, 11:9, 12:14, 11:13, 11:7, 11:13, 6:11) in the first round of men's singles at 2018 Bulgaria Open. It has been more than 12 years since his previous first-round exit at 2006 Qatar Open for any World Tour event.
Ma Long played against Liam Pitchford in team event at 2016 Rio Olympic Games (6:11, 11:4, 11:9, 11:9) and he regarded that match the worst match he had played within two years. He didn't perform well and waited for the opponent's unforced errors. In today's encounter, Ma Long had chance to win the fourth set leading 10:6 but did not capitalize the advantage. What's more, he was called fault serve and penalized for multiple times, which made he quite frustrated.

In the first round of men's doubles, Ma Long / Xu Xin beat Korea's Baek Hogyun / Kim Daewoo by 3-0 (13:11, 11:5, 11:5). They will meet Czech's Lubomir Jancarik / David Reitspies in the quarterfinal.

On Aug 17, Ma Long / Xu Xin beat Czech's Lubomir Jancarik / David Reitspies by 3-0 (11:8, 11:2, 11:9) in the quarterfinal and beat Chinese Taipei's Lin Yun-Ju / Liao Cheng-Ting by 3-1 (9:11, 11-5, 11-2, 11-4) in the semifinal of 2018 Bulgaria Open.
After match, Ma Long met with local table tennis fans.

On Aug 19, Ma Long / Xu Xin beat Japan's Masataka Morizono / Yuya Oshima by 3-1 (9:11, 11:4, 11:8, 11:6) in the final. This is their ninth World Tour men's doubles title as a pair. It is also Ma Long's 22nd World Tour men's doubles title.

In the post-match interview, Ma Long said, "I played better compared to previous days. I know many people came here to watch me play and it was a pity that I lost in the first round of men's singles. I am happy that we won men's doubles title at last. I hope I can come here again in the future." Xu Xin asked the crowd to give a round of applause to Ma Long, "We recently paired at China Open. I lost in the first round of men's singles and didn't adjust well and we lost in men's doubles. Although Ma Long lost in the first round of men's singles here, we managed to win the final of men's doubles. Thanks him."

According to China National Team rule, Ma Long will not attend Czech Open next week as a penalty for his first round exit at Bulgaria Open.

Although invited as current World Champion, Ma Long will not attend 2018 Men's World Cup in Paris as player list was confirmed on Aug 20.
The news drew a lot of attention and led to many guesses of the reasons.
Ma Long explained on his Sina Weibo on Aug 21 after he arrived in Beijing from Bulgaria, "I am getting thirty years old and I need to choose to attend some tournaments but not all. Don't worry. See you at Austrian Open and Grand Finals. Table tennis events at Asian Games will start soon. Go, China!"

As we can see if you not attend tournaments -now for example Dima,Zhang or others you will lose the feeling of games on tournaments, both Dima and Zhang said that, thats why even Ma long can lose,we see Dima is lookng for his form and confidence.XU Xin lost 2 times in the row before he found his confidence. Is Ma long preparing to retire?or CNT wants him to retire? If he does not attend tournamnts his ranking will fall a nd it will be very hard for him to win WTTC if he meets FZD in 3rd round for example. Is this his decision or CNT?
