In this interview with Beijing TV, Ma Long talked about fans, the recent losses of China National Team to other associations and his goals for the future.
Although other people regard him as a 29-year-old elder player, he always regards himself young. The drive for him not resting on his laurels but moving forward is his passion for table tennis. Upon defeat, he has to face pressure from himself and outside.
He is satisfied with his overall performance after Rio Olympic Games but the way to Tokyo Olympic Games would not be effortless.
Good health is his wish to himself. The fighting spirit is what he wants his fans to learn from him.

About fans coming to see him play and writing letters:
This stadium (Tianjin Quanjian's home stadium) is bigger than most of the stadiums where we played tournaments. To my big surprise, such a big stadium was filled with so many spectators.
They (my fans) wrote so many letters. Some wrote they are rooting for me. Some wrote how they knew me at the first time. Some even wrote their daily routine to me. Some wrote that they started to exercise every day after they knew me.

About the age:
Ma Long: The commentators and reporters often regard me as a 29-year-old elder player. In other sports like basketball, soccer and so on, no one really call Lionel Messi elder, as well as Cristiano Ronaldo, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray. But rules seem different for table tennis players and we are elder. I wonder why. I do not regard myself as an elder player. I always feel that I am young.

About the drive to move forward:
I want to surpass myself. I want to stay on this stage for a little bit longer. I have a strong passion for table tennis. I love playing and I think I can still play well.

About the defeat and criticism:
After a defeat, my feeling is such - I don't want to talk about it for a couple of days. It is hard to let it go. Why did I lose in this match? I felt I had the advantages but I just could not win it. Or I had some chances but I did not take them. This kind of pressure is what we are experiencing in China National Team.
The pressure is not only from myself but also from the public. People don't expect you to lose. They don't expect you to drop one game or two. They don't even expect a tight score and ask why you did not win easily. When you lost one match, it became breaking news. I am curious if Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo did not score in a match, will the reporters say, "You must be elder and fail to score." ? This is a new problem that China National Team and myself have to face in the new Olympic cycle.

About China National Team recent losses to other associations:
There are several reasons. First, each player has his/her own cycle of performance. There are ups and downs within short-term (1 year) and long-term (4 years). Players will adjust accordingly based on their form. Usually after major tournaments there will be small drops in form. After the 2017 World Championships and China National Games, many players had some drops. I think it is not terrifying that our team lost some matches at this moment. There is quite some time before Tyoko Olympic Games.
Second, the change of new material ball has some impact. Chinese players have good touch and are sensitive to the ball. When the ball did not behave the way as one expected, one started to feel confused and worried. Then one's performance was not as consistent as before. That's normal.
What's more, players in other associations have improved after studying China National Team. Maybe they have accelerated in the new Olympic cycle since Rio Olympic Games or 2017 World Championships, earlier than us. It makes us aware of and prepared for their challenges. It is not a bad signal at all.

About his performance and future:
It's more than a year since Rio Olympic Games. I am satisfied with my overall performance within this year. Well done! However, it will not be effortless on the way to Tokyo.

Q: What's one of your wishes at age 29?
I wish myself good health.

Q: Can you play to the age at which Jan-Ove Waldner got retired?
If I were still playing in China National Team over 40 years old, it means that China National Team would go downhill. It is not going to happen.

Q: Who are the major rivals for China men's team?
Team Germany is giving men's team the biggest challenge now. Of Team Japan, Jun Mizutani, Koki Niwa and Tomokazu Harimoto, are also among the most important rivals in this Olympic cycle.

Q: What do you want your fans to learn from you?
The fighting spirit. Never give up.

Do you know that Ma Long is the first and only male player who wins singles titles in both ITTF Junior World Championshisp and senior World Championships?
He won boy's singles gold in the 2nd Junior World Championships in Kobe, 2004 in addition to boy's team gold, boy's doubles silver and mixed doubles silver medals. As the backbone of boy's team, Ma Long did not lose a set in the team event and scored twice in all the knockout stage matches.
24176761_773722096085701_3127676927631914596_n.jpg

Ma Long also won boy's team gold and mixed doubles silver medals in the 1st Junior World Championships in Santiago, 2003.

Here is old ITTF news on 12/5/2004. The province of Liaoning in China has enjoyed considerable success in the 2nd ITTF World Junior Table Tennis Championships in Kobe; CHANG Chenchen is from Liaoning as is LIU Shiwen and also MA Long, the winner of the Junior Boys’ Singles title on Sunday 5 December 2004.
He beat Korea’s CHO Eon Rae in the final to take the title, giving a breathtaking display of attacking table tennis, MA Long was superb, the best player in the tournament.
Clear Goal
MA Long had his eyes clearly set on gold from the very first point of the contest; he greeted every point with a deep throated cry of success; in no time he was 8-2 ahead in the first game of the final; he was in the fast lane. CHO Eon Rae stemmed the tide somewhat by recovering to 8-6 but at 10-7 a trademark MA Long forehand won the point, the first game was his and the Chinese player had the better start.
The Chinese boy stands wide to the backhand to receive service, he looks for his dynamic forehand at every opportunity; he has fast footwork, possesses a good range of services and he is the expert at following the service with a strong attack; if the first attacking stroke is the forehand then it’s not likely to be returned! The problem facing CHO Eon Rae was trying to stem the tidal wave of forehand attacks; no wonder he shook his head on occasions as MA Long gave him little time to respond; in no time the Chinese boy was two games to the good.
However, in the third game CHO Eon Rae, urged on by his compatriots sitting in the tiered seating, made the better start, he led 4-1 but MA Long was a man with a mission; he won the next six points with incredible backhand blocks as CHO Eon Rae threw caution to the wind. The Korean took risks, he made errors and any weak return was greeted with a trademark MA Long forehand; the Chinese teenager won the third game and was one away from the title.
CHO Eon Rae has proved himself to be a fine competitor in Kobe; he made every effort to stay close to the table in the fourth game in order to give MA Long as little time as possible to play the forehand topspin stroke that had caused so many problems. He led 10-6, then 10-8 and decided to take a risk; he elected to serve long and fast; the problem was the service was too long, it missed the table. It was 10-9 and had CHO Eon Rae blown his chance; to his credit he remained positive, he stayed close to the table and a forehand flick wide to the MA Long forehand won the point and reduced the arrears to two games.
However, it was only a temporary reprieve, MA Long returned to the table in top gear, pressed the accelerator even harder, made an electric start, never relinquished the advantage; took a `Time Out’ at 7-6 ahead, won the next point to go ahead 8-6, missed a forehand topspin to make it 8-7, won the next point when a CHO Eon Rae flick missed and moved to championship point with a controlled forehand topspin.
He had the opportunity to secure victory, he didn’t spurn the chance, he won the point exercising control and composure, he was the World Junior Boys’ Singles champion.
MA Long is sixteen years old, he is eligible to compete in the ITTF World Junior Championships for two more years and in Kobe he never lost a singles match whilst for CHO Eon Rae he was the runner up yet again; in 2003 in Santiago, Chile, he had lost in the final to LI Hu.
“I’m pleased, I did well, I think my opponent was stressed”, said MA Long. “I was confident before the match started.” He played with a great deal of confidence, he had been impressive throughout. “He played very well today, he had a clear mind; the doubles was not so good but in the singles he was technically very good indeed”, said coach CHEN Jian. “He has his strong points, he is very good following the service with a strong first attack and he is good at blocking and controlling his opponent’s attacks, especially with his backhand.”
A fine performance by MA Long and surely he deserves a week’s rest. “I played a great many games”, said MA Long. “I’m tired but I think it will be only one day’s rest and then it will be back to training in Beijing.”
That’s life for a World Champion.

On Dec 5th, Team Tianjin Quanjian experienced a 1-3 defeat to Team PLA in Dalian.
In the first set, Ma Long beat Zhou Kai by 3-1 (11:9, 11:6, 9:11, 11:7). In the second set, Liu Dingshuo challenged Fan Zhendong and lost 2-3 in the deciding game by a small margin (9:11, 2:11, 11:5, 11:8, 5:7). In the third set of men's doubles, Liu Dingshuo / Cheng Jingqi was beaten 0-2 by Zhou Yu / Zhou Kai (7:11, 8:11). In the fourth set, Ma Long was not able to stop Fan Zhendong. He lost by 1-3 (8:11, 4:11, 11:9, 5:11). Team Tianjin now has 1 wins and 2 losses.
24312600_777916375666273_8211664112251782783_n.jpg

In the post-match interview, Ma Long said, "In recent years of Super League, I have lost to Fan Zhendong. Today I led 7:5 in the first game but he came back and won by 11:8. I was affected to some extent. The result is normal no matter who wins. No one feels easy to play with him now and I have a lot to review on my performance. I can feel the pressure from other players who want to beat me; it is the same situation for him as all other players want to beat him too. He is already a world's best player. I cannot guarentee a victory over him if I play normally; I must outdo myself in order to beat him. When I play with him, I never regard myself superior."
24909800_777916452332932_995262184981340745_n.jpg

Coach Ma Wenge commented, "It is normal whether Fan Zhendong wins or Ma Long wins. Their matches are tough. Ma Long has not played many matches recently. He is still in the recovery of injuries. Today Fan Zhendong established the advantage very quickly and it is normal that Ma Long lost. Our team has to make improvement on doubles to give Ma Long less pressure." "It is difficult to win the champion. Even Team PLA has not won all the matches. We still have chances in later rounds. We have to fight one by one."
Ma Long arrived in Beijing on the morning of Dec 6th. In the next round of Super League on Dec 9th, Team Tianjin Quanjian will face Team Shenzhen in Shenzhen.

Coach Ma Wenge was very satisfied with Ma Long's performance. "I did not expect that he played so well today. There were some tight moments during the matches while the results were normal. The ball change affects him a lot and other players are trying to challenge him but he can control the matches with his high level of performance."
The next round of Super League will take place on Dec 19th. Team Tianjin Quanjian will face Team Shanghai in Shanghai.

ITTF Pro/World Tour Grand Finals are the last tournament to end each exciting year of table tennis. Ma Long is undoubtedly the most successful player in the singles event at Grand Finals during its history of 22 years, who has won 5 champions out of his 8 attendance. In addition, he appeared 3 times in doubles event and paired with Hao Shuai to win a doubles champion at Grand Finals.
Crowned World Junior Champion in Dec 2004, Ma Long started to play senior ITTF World Tour since early 2005. He attended 6 events with the best result as runner-up of German Open, beating Oh Sang Eun, Chuang Chih Yuan, Timo Boll along the way before losing to Vladimir Samsonov by 2 points in the deciding game in the final. He was the only player of China National Team who was qualified for 2005 Grand Finals held in Fuzhou. As #8 seed, he beat #13 seed Germany's Peter Franz by 4-1 and lost to #3 seed Oh Sang Eun by 1-4 in the quarterfinal. Our fans club was founded right that time. We made our first website and got our first banner flag signed by 17-year-old Ma Long on Dec 10, 2005.

In 2006, Ma Long attended 7 ITTF Tour events. His performance in singles was not as impressive as in doubles. He and Hao Shuai paired up in 4 events winning one title, and were qualified for 2006 Grand Finals held in Hong Kong. As #6 seed, they beat #2 seed Austria's Robert Gardos/Chen Weixing by 4-0, #4 seed Hong Kong's Ko Lai Chak/Li Ching by 4-2 and #1 seed Ma Lin/Chen Qi by 4-3 to win their first Grand Finals doubles champion.

In 2007, in competition for a ticket to Beijing Olympic Games, along with legendary trio Wang Liqin, Ma Lin and Wang Hao, Ma Long attended 10 ITTF Tour events and won two titles beating Ma Lin in the final at both Kuwait Open and German Open. As #3 seed of 2007 Grand Finals held in Beijing, Ma Long beat #15 seed Chuang Chih Yuan by 4-0 and Singapore's Yang Zi by 4-2 before he lost to #1 seed Ma Lin by 1-4 in the semifinal. Ma Long and Hao Shuai paired up in 6 events although being less victorious than the previous year. As #7 seed, they beat #4 seed Korea's Lee Jung Woo/Cho Eon Rae by 4-0 and lost to #2 seed Ma Lin/Wang Hao by 3-4 in the semifinal.

In 2009, Ma Long showed stunning performance to claim 4 singles titles out of 5 ITTF Tour events he attended, including Danish Open beating Dimitrij Ovtcharov, Kuwait Open beating Wang Hao, China Open beating Wang Liqin and English Open beating Ma Lin. He also won 3 doubles champions but since he had paired with different partners, none of the pair met the qualification criteria of 2009 Grand Finals held in Macau in Jan 2010. As #1 seed and newly crowned World Ranking #1, Ma Long beat #9 seed Dimitrij Ovtcharov by 4-1, #13 seed Christian Suss by 4-2, #10 seed Zhang Jike by 4-2 and #11 seed Xu Xin by 4-2, to successfully defend his singles title at Grand Finals, while none of the previous winners had won twice in a row.

In the post-match interview, Ma Long spoke highly of Ma Te. "Ma Te has never beaten Xu Xin previously. He gained confidence during this match and gave Xu Xin a hard time". He also hoped the victory of doubles can ignite Cheng Jingqi / Fang Yinchi in the later rounds.
When asked about the new identity of a father, Ma Long said, "Whoever I am, when I stand on the court, I will play my best. Off the court, I am a father now, which encourages me more to fight on the court."
Team Tianjin Quanjian will visit Jiaxing to play against Team Bazhou on Dec 23.

2017 has been an exciting and thrilling year for Ma Long and Ma Long fans. Joy for victories, worries for injuries, frustrations for ball adaptation, and drama during and after China Open.
It has been a fruitful year for Ma Long. He successfully defended singles title at two major tournaments - World Championships and China National Games. He obtained Asian Team Champion and two ITTF World Tour Platinum singles champions (Qatar Open and Japan Open) and one doubles champion (Japan Open), as well as World Cup bronze medal and China National Games doubles silver medal. He has been ranked World No.1 throughout the year. In addition, he graduated from Shang Jiaotong University, got married and has just become a father of baby boy.
By the end of the year, let's just relax and enjoy the show - Ma Long Best Shots of 2017 by STIGA
