On Apr 23, #MaLong shared a video of Yili Milk on his Sina Weibo and wrote, "When children run, they only look forward and do not fear of falling. They are persistent in pursuit of dreams, which always touch the adults. What can you learn from children? Let's be with Yili Milk and go to the court like children. Keep the initial goal and keep growing." Yili Milk is a partner of 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games.

Interestingly, Ma Long's first TV commercial was for Yili Milk back in 2010 during 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou. In the commercial, he said, "Let's show the power of Chinese to the world".

2010 was not an easy year for Ma Long. He got injury on his ankle during Super League and hairline fracture was found before 2010 Team World Cup (Sep 28-Oct 1). As World Ranking #1, he was invited to 2010 men's World Cup (Oct 29-31) but got replaced by the deadline of confirmation (Oct 15). Ma Long was on the initial entries list of Asian Games (Nov 13-20) men's singles, but Coach Liu Guoliang said he could be replaced again at any time before the tournament. It was not until Oct 26 that he was confirmed along with the defending champion Wang Hao (2006 Doha).
Ma Long had hard fights against Kenta Matsudaira (11:9, 9:11, 9:11, 11:8, 11:9, 11:4) in R16 and Chuang Chih-yuan (12:10, 7:11, 7:11, 14:12, 11:1, 11:8) in the quarterfinal. He saved 3 game points in the 4th game when 7-10 down against Chuang Chih-yuan and turned the table around. "Coach Liu Guoliang almost broke down at that moment." He said in the post-match interview, "It is the most thrilling day in my life." Coach Qin Zhijian then corrected him, "So far. That's the most thrilling day in your life so far."
In the semifinal, Ma Long swept Joo Sae-hyuk (11:4, 11:7, 11:5, 11:9) and met Wang Hao in the final. Most journalists believed Wang Hao who just won 2010 World Cup would successfully defend his title. So did Ma Long's teammates except Ma Lin. Ma Lin recalled, "At lunch time fore the final, other players bet on Wang Hao and only me bet on Ma Long. They are of similar level but Wang Hao has better winning records and is in better form recently. However, Wang Hao can afford losing Asian Games, Ma Long cannot." Ma Long beat Wang Hao by 4-2 (9:11, 11:8, 11:7, 11:3, 4:11, 12:10) in the final and he finally smiled, as he did in the Yili Milk commercial.

Ma Long also updated his Sina Weibo, "There is a rainbow. There is hope."
It was rainy when Team China left Beijing for Sweden, and Ma Long told the journalists that he hoped it will be sunny when they are back. Rainbow is a good sign, isn't it?

Table Tennis World Magazine Interview: How does Ma Long prepare for 2018 WTTTC? Drink Tea, Read History and Practice English!
31369484_872085859582657_736782745647062383_n.jpg

Q: Who is your roommate during this year's closed training camp? Who was your former roommate(s)?
Ma Long: Previously Cui Qinglei was my roommate most of the time. This year I stayed with him at the beginning and then Wang Chuqin.

Q: Which dish do you have most frequently during the closed training? (Or first food that comes to your mind?)
Ma Long: I don't have anything specific that I stick to or I don't eat. The menu keeps changing every day in the food court. Tomato juice and cucumber juice come to my mind first.

Q: What incident in the shared room do you remember best? Do you try out anything new?
Ma Long: It is the first time that I share a room with Wang Chuqin. I feel everything remains the same as before except that I drink tea instead of red wine.
I also talk with the foreign physical coaches in English, not aiming to learn English, but trying to communicate with them and get them involved. I gradually get used to chatting with them in English.

Q: How do you relax in your spare time?
Ma Long: When I wake up in the morning, I drink tea. Some people like to have unprotected sleep but I don't. I spend this period of time drinking tea and reading news. It is a new way for me to relax. I also listen to music.
31404203_872085902915986_7125020573220928096_n.jpg

Q: What do others say to you most often during the closed training?
Ma Long: Foreign physical coaches ask me every day, “How do you feel today?”. (Foreign physical coaches comment on Ma Long: Great.)

Q: Can you summarize in a few words what you have improved during the closed training?
Ma Long: Physical strengths.

Q: What have you made biggest progress on during the closed training?
Ma Long: Physical training is the best among all closed training camps. The training is more systematic with the foreign physical coaches. Although I feel tired every day after the training, I keep on physical training even on holidays. It helps prevent injuries and sickness.

Q: What do you feel most different from previous closed training camps?
Ma Long: Obviously this closed training camp is short. It was already late March when I came back from German Open. In every closed training, I feel very tired. However, towards the end, I realize that how time flies and I haven't finished certain plans. Every time it is the same feeling. Actually technical and tactical abilities are ready to keep as we practice every day. The major preparations during closed training are to stock up mental and physical strengths, to make ourselves maintain high focus. I am very devoted to the training this time although short.
31472557_872085966249313_6259436835550529766_n.jpg

Q: How do you adjust your mood and form when you meet difficulties?
Ma Long: Read books. Knowledge is power. When I am down, I read books on history. There are way more people in history who faced greater difficulties than you.

Q: If three active foreign players can form a best international team, who do you choose?
Ma Long: Timo Boll, Dimitrij Ovtcharov and Jun Mizutani.

Tecent Sports Chief Journalist Wang Yiwei calls Ma Long and Wang Chuqin "English study group".

(20180428 Back row: Coach Wang Hao, Tecent Sports Chief Journalist Wang Yiwei and Table Tennis World Magazine Chief Editor Xia Wa)

The reason is revealed in Wang Chuqin's Table Tennis World Magazine Interview: How does Wang Chuqin prepare for 2018 WTTTC? Speak English with Ma Long in the shared room.

Q: Who is your roommate during this year's closed training camp? Who was your former roommate(s)?
Wang Chuqin: Previously Zheng Peifeng was my roommate most of the time. My current roommate is Ma Long. It is the first time that I share a room with Brother Long. I have learnt good habits from Brother Long, for example, studying English using mobile APP.

Q: What incident in the shared room do you remember best? Do you try out anything new?
Wang Chuqin: Frankly we don't spend too much time in the room during closed training. I work out in the morning from 6:30 am and have morning, afternoon and evening training sessions. I finish by 9:30 pm. Previously when I had chance, I chatted with Brother Long about techniques and sometimes mentality. For example, before 2017 China National Games, I asked him how to deal with the anxiety as I played for the first time. He said, "What are you anxious about? Even you lost, there's nothing serious." and helped me reduce stress. This time I am too busy and tired to feel anxious.

Q: What have you made biggest progress on during the closed training?
Wang Chuqin: English. Brother Long and I study English together and we chat in English now and then. My techniques and mentality also improve.

On the opening day of WTTTC 2018, Team China swept Team Russia by 3-0 and Ma Long extends his winning streak at WTTTC to 20, without even dropping a game.
In the first set, Fan Zhendong defeated Sadi Ismailov by 3-0 (11:9, 11:8, 11:7). In the second set, Ma Long beat Vladimir Sidorenko by 3-0 (11:2, 13:11, 11:6). In the third set, Wang Chuqin overcame Vildan Gadiev by 3-0 (11:7, 12:10, 12:10).

It is funny that Ma Long and Vladimir Sidorenko stopped in the third game trying to find the ball under the table.
<iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FMaLongFamily%2Fvideos%2F873100119481231%2F&show_text=0&width=560" width="560" height="315" style="border:none;overflow:hidden" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" allowTransparency="true" allowFullScreen="true"></iframe>

In the post-match interview, Ma Long said, "This is my seventh WTTTC. Every time the feelings are different while I will try my best to complete the mission." When asked why the first and third game were smooth, but the second game was tight and he saved game points to turn the tides around, he said, "It is normal. You don't eat the exact same amount of food for each meal, right? My opponent made a couple of good shots, I made some unforced errors, and lucky balls here and there, then we came to the crucial points of a 11-point game. It is normal to drop a game or two, even lose a match. People shall not think things must go wrong if score is tight. They need to realize this is the sport." When asked if he had experienced such a noisy arena before as there were drums, he said, "Not often. At Rio Olympic Games, Brazilian spectators were loud rooting for Team Brazil, but not constantly. Does the drum guy feel tired at all, doing that for 20 minutes?" He came to Halmstad 3 years ago for Men's World Cup. He thought things change a lot and this time the arena is bigger.

On Apr 30, MAgic Long continues his run of 21 3-0 in World Team Championships and helped Team China beat Team Brazil by 3-0.
It was the third group match at WTTTC 2018. In the first set, Fan Zhendong beat Gustavo Tsuboi by 3-0 (13:11, 11:8, 11:1). In the second set, Ma Long defeated Hugo Calderano by 3-0 (11:8, 11:5, 11:9). In the third set, Xu Xin swept Eric Jouti by 3-0 (11:1, 11:5, 11:1).
<iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FMaLongFamily%2Fvideos%2F874086969382546%2F&show_text=0&width=560" width="560" height="315" style="border:none;overflow:hidden" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" allowTransparency="true" allowFullScreen="true"></iframe>

In the post-match interview, Ma Long commented on Hugo Calderano, "I played him once at 2014 WTTTC. He has improved a lot in the past half year and defeated many top players in ITTF World Tour events and European leagues. I made full preparations today. I played well and did not give him much room to play his game." When asked if Hugo Calderano will be a major rival of China National Team, he said, "He has shown good level against Team China. Previously he beat Lin Gaoyuan. In two encounters with Fan Zhendong, although he lost, he made some initial lead and had chance to win some games. He is considered as a major rival now." Hugo Calderano also thought he played well but Ma Long is simply just the best and hard to beat.
Hearing Delegate Huang Biao said "Ma Long is the team leader.", he said, "On the court I just did my job whatever position I was assigned by the coach. Off the court, I gave my two cents to players who met some difficulties and hopefully I can help them."

Ma Long's advice helped Lin Gaoyuan. In the second group match when Team China swept Team Czech, Lin Gaoyuan played for Team China for the first time and beat Tomas Konecny by 3-1 (11:8, 11:5, 9:11, 11:4), after Fan Zhendong beat Lubomir Jancark by 3-0 (11:4, 11:6, 13:11) and Xu Xin beat Tomas Tregler by 3-0 (11:5, 11:6, 11:6). Lin Gaoyuan said in the post-match interview, "I had great pressure during the preparations for WTTTC as a first-timer. Ma Long knows me well. I ask him a lot and he helps me a lot during the closed training, warm-up tournament and match preparations."

In the post-match interview, Ma Long said, "I haven't played with my opponent since WTTTC 2016. Today I played my game and restricted his performance." To review the group stage, Ma Long thought everything was normal. "Whether being a good form needs to be tested on the court, not during training. If the opponent causes you troubles, a good form is not good enough." "In the group stage, we need to get used to the arena and atmosphere. I tried to find my form during the group stage and I hope I can play better in the knockout stage." Team China will have a one-day break. He will have normal training, change his sponges and watch R16 to find out the next opponent. When asked what he meant by treating every WTTTC as his first, he said, "I don't rely on past experiences. Every time the opponents may try something new. I will make serious preparations as if it were the first encounter.

On May 1, Team China beat Team Portugal by 3-0, with Xu Xin 3-0 Diogo Carvalho (11:9. 11:5, 11:4), Fan Zhendong 3-2 Joao Geraldo (8:11, 10:12, 11:8, 12:10, 11:6), and Lin Gaoyuan 3-0 Tiago Apolonia (11:9, 11:8, 11:7). China won all five group matches 3-0.

(Ma Long was not worried about Fan Zhendong.)

Ma Long did a good job as the captain and cheerleader. Coach Liu Guozheng said he made the players solidary.

On May 4, it was a tough test for Ma Long who came back after 1-2 down and helped China beat Austria by 3-0 in the quarterfinal of 2018 WTTTC.
In the first set, Ma Long faced Robert Gardos. According to Coach Liu Guoliang, who reviewed and commented after the whole match, Robert Gardos is the only player on Team Austria who Ma Long finds uncomfortable to play with as he has trained and is familiar with Chinese players. Ma Long was trailing in the first and third game and lost in 2 points margin (11:13, 11:5, 9:11). In the fourth game, he finally found the rhythm after 7:7 tie and finished the game by 11:7, then led in the fifth by 10:0. After one mercy point, he wasted two match points but no more and sealed 3-2 victory (11:13, 11:5, 9:11, 11:7, 11:3).

(Angry Ma Long said F!@#$%^*)

In the second set, Xu Xin beat Stefan Fegerl by 3-0 (11:6, 11:5, 11:4). In the third set, Fan Zhendong beat Daniel Habesohn by 3-0 (11:9, 11:8, 11:4).
In the post-match interview, Ma Long said, "The result is normal. It is normal to lose a game or two. My opponent is of good level to reach the quarterfinal. He is familiar with Chinese players. In the beginning, I did not play several points well as I expected. The 11-game is short and quick. I caught up in the first and third game and had some chance to win. That's the sport." "My opponent's style is similar to Chinese players. He had nothing to lose. I was a little tense today and did not play as loose as he did. I hope this match helps my form build up in the following match." "I was satisfied with my performance today as I won by 3-2 despite of difficulties." Ma Long has not dropped a game since WTTTC 2012 (now the record is 22 consecutive team match wins without dropping a game) and today he dropped two. He said, "I have been lucky to win all previous matches at WTTTC 3-0. I always get prepared in dropping a game or two in a match. That's normal."
In the semifinal, China will face the host Sweden.

On May 5, Ma Long led China to beat Sweden by 3-0 and reached the final at WTTTC 2018. They will face Germany tomorrow.
In the first set, Ma Long beat Mattias Karlsson by 3-0 (11:6, 11:5, 13:11). In the second set, Fan Zhendong defeated Kristian Karlsson by 3-1 (13:11, 8:11, 11:3, 11:2). In the third set, Xu Xin sealed the victory beating Jon Persson by 3-1 (11:6, 13:11, 11:5).
In the post-match interview, Ma Long said, "I was fully prepared for this match because Mattias Karlsson uses pimples rubber which is rare. He played very well in the previous matches for Sweden and usually had a strong start. I tried to be more proactive from the beginning of the game. Yesterday I did not play well at the beginning of the game against Robert Gardos and gave him too many chances." "Today Sweden chose to be XYZ team and sent Mattias Karlsson first trying to disturb our rhythm. I played him once in WTTTC 2016 also in the first set. I tried to play more actively and attacked first." "I did not think of changing tactics at the time-out when I had my fourth match point. I just calmed down and fought one point by another. Actually my opponent may think too much." “I want to thank the Chinese fans for coming to support us and also thank the Swedish audience for rooting for their team. I believe it will be a fantastic match." For the upcoming final, he said, "Both Germany and Korea are our long-time rivals. No matter who we will face in the final, each of us will play our best and also cover each other."
Coach Liu Guoliang commentated the match and described Ma Long as a master of strategy who has his own strategic system to judge the situation and make change accordingly, which is very logical and rational. He is known for variations and versatility. However, whether he makes change on tactics or not is not random. He can make right predictions on a rally based on the opponent and situation. When he sticks to certain tactics, for example, he served mostly to the middle in today's match, it indicates that the tactic is working effectively. He is good of keeping the opponent under his control, which is like programmed by computer. Coach Liu Guoliang also pointed out that Ma Long's long winning streak of 3-0 is unusual in 11-point game. In the 21-point game era, it was already hard to win always by 3-0. It adds some unnecessary pressure and dropping a game or two helps to release the pressure.
