TTD'S 'Creating the most unorthodox player'

      Hi everyone,

I got this idea from a Tennis YouTube channel. The idea here is that we go through the different aspects of a what makes up a player's game and nominate the player's who have been (relatively) successful with this aspect of their game not being textbook. To keep it simple I'd say we consider a player's game to consist of serves, pushes/ receives, forehands, and backhands.

To kick things off, let's think of who has the most unorthodox servers. This is probably the hardest of the categories because there isn't really such a thing as an orthodox serve.

My nomination for serve is Kenta, but I'm sure there's far stranger servers out there.

Anyone else got a better nomination for most unorthodox serve?

Pros only? Or is there a level threshold you want to maintain?

Go look at this video of Eric Boggan from back in the day (this is 1991).

Now imagine if you could create a 2017 version of that. Better serves. Maybe enhance the twiddling a bit. Spinnier rubber now.

I'd say semi-pro at least or self-nominations with video evidence.

I think Ding Ning's tomahawk serve looks more unorthodox. It likely cost her the gold medal at London. Anton Kallberg and Tristan Flore have unusual serves. Also, Daria Trigolos has one of the few side-swipe serves that I've ever seen.

There is a thread for LP penhold attackers, I think that this style is very unorthodox. I don't know any pros playing like that, but I remember that there was a female player from Chinese Super League of this style.

When you talk about unorthodox and pretty darn excellent, Quadri Aruna comes to mind immediately even if, not for his serves.

Don't know if exactly unorthodox, but the grip on Joe Seyfried's serve looks quite strange. Not to forget Dan Seemiller with his racket grip.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Dima's strange BH serve.

      Add Matt Seeberger backhand.
If he beat 2000+ players with a double handed backhand from the forehand corner then Seeberger would probably be the winner for BH. With his name so close to Seemiller it lends itself nicely to new grip name: Seeberger-Grip.

You mean the strange hooking of the forefinger and the unusual thumb placement?

His whole game looks as if he has shoulder damage, not just the serve. Pretty good player.
