Zhang Jike - How to play the Backhand Flick

How to play the right Backhand Flick like Zhang Jike!

What is this shot!? :) Reminds me of Xu Xin's of Simon Gauzys! Zhang Jike then puts it into practice and disguises it against his opponent under the watchful eye of Liu Guoliang!

I think most of those are what I thought was called a VIOLIN, like the way the bow is pulled by a violin player.

Every so often he does his actual BH flip and it is much different.

Funny how things come around in the fullness of time.
My friends and I used to play that shot when we started out as beginner players in the sixties.
We unlearned it as we became 'proper' players.
I guess I must now go learn it again;)

A short best-of video from January 2017 - June 2017:

I think over here we call it strawberry flick.
At 0:30 3T tabletennis demonstrate it too.
This might be adapted technique from lp players, at least i've had a higher ranked lp player do this to me a few years ago.
Man, i was not more than roadkill.
That return against side-/backspin serve of mine.... i was toasted and baffled.
But this season i could at least take a game from him...
:)

chila did it first but with bigger motion , in rallies most of the time, and the modern french players "evolved" it with shorter stroke as a method to receive (gauzy robinot etc) , it was indeed called violin when it first came out like ages ago

Kato Miyu seems to do it a lot. I've posted a video compilation of her doing tons of violin/strawberry/boomergang on another forum, but unfortunately the video is not available anymore. It is a very cool move and I'm trying to do it more often too

Larry Hodges calls this stroke strawberry flick in some of his books. So we also called it strawberry stroke. :)
I think this stroke becomes more and more common. It's a good variation instaed of only using banana flicks. And in my opinion it's also a good and easy way to return sidespin serves (especially backhand or reverse pendulum serves). You can use it also to receive into the wide forehand. Here are another examples: Bence Majoros uses the strawberry stroke many times in this match:

Also used by Philipp Floritz at 1:20 (there are some real nice points in the video)

And here are some strawberry flicks by Simon Gauzy  :
