There will be 5 representatives for each of the JNT men's and women's team next year in Sweden

will be qualified
- top Japanese player at the ITTF ranking in December (Mizutani/Niwa) and (Ishikawa/Hirano) should be contending for that place. There is still the World Cup, the German Open , and ITTF Grand Finals

- winner of the national championships (Jan2018)
- winner of the selection tournament
- top player against Chinese in 2017
- top player against top30 (ex-Japan) in 2017

in there are some slots left (same player meeting those criterias) they will award themselves the wild cards to the players of their choice.

For the selection tournament, the 5 best ranked Japanese in the ITTF tournament are not participating in round 1
round 1 has 20 players in 2 blocks of 10 players playing in mini-championship (9 matches) in best of 5
top 4 players of each block are qualified for round 2 where players ranked 2 to 5 will join as seeded players (so 12 players total)

round 2 will be on Dec24-25
round 1 has already started for womens. It will finish tomorrow, and will be followed by mens

Here are the results for today. I will not translate it, sorry. You can try to use Rikaikun add-on on Chrome to translate it

I wonder if Harimoto will outplay everyone. He should definitely make the top 5 atleast given his form

Thing about the futures is, it's hard to know. Harimoto still has some growth spurts ahead. He will gain weight, length, strength; as a result of that, his basic motorics will change, his agility will change. Changing the direction/speed of 1 pound of matter is a different thing from moving 1 kilogram about.

Mentally, growing up is a challenge too. Adulthood comes with new pressures and distractions. And it's quite common for shooting stars to burn up early.

I hope not, but have no crystal ball.

Really true!! He's still not an adult and lot of changes will come to his body. Let's hope these changes are positive, and even if they are not, let's hope he keeps fighting to be the great kid we all love him as!!

I think it's a really good system.
If I am right, in the first round doesn't compete: Mizutani, Niwa, Kenta, Harimoto, Yoshida.
Yoshimura Maharu, Oshima and Ueda have the most chances besides them, maybe Yoshimura Kazuhiro and Jin Takuya are good enough to win the selection tournament.
Oshima is a great player, but very inconsistent. Y.Maharu is a beast when he plays against a slower paced player, but not so good against fast attackers. Jin Takuya is a heavily FH based player and maybe he is the most notorious choo-er, beating Harimoto in that regard :D. Yoshida reached a good ranking, but I don't see him having any chance.

This selection tournament also serves as a development league as there aren't too many open tournaments in Japan where top players meet at once.

Problem is that sometimes a player who has very bad record against overseas players can slip through but the damage is kept minimal as it'll be a team comp.

Sakai is Asuka Sakai? EDIT: I see, it's Machi
I am disappointed in Yoshimura Maharu's performance. Hirano and T.Taku are surprises, I would not bet on them qualifying.

Hirano gave a good game to Mizutani in the national championships last year and doing well in the Japan leagues. I am disappointed by Ueda. Kizukuri is really the player to watch from now on for the coming years

Yeah, that's the thing about this selection tournament as a player who performs well domesticaly doen't mean he'll do well in international tournament. Nevertheless, it's great see them grabbing the opportunity.
