Lightbulb Another Rating System Much More Accurate Than the ITTF World Ranking

ITTF Table Tennis Ratings is no longer the real "World Ranking". It's now considered as a ladder for the most recent active players. It doesn't reflect the true skills level of the top players. And using the current ITTF World Ranking is dangerous.
Therefore, I decided to make my own rating system, with the hope to determine correctly the real best table tennis players in the world.

      By analyzing:

      • 43 735 table tennis matches played in 2017 (in official ITTF events)
      • nearly 100 table tennis international tournaments during 2017

Here is my own Table Tennis World Ranking - Senior Men for 01/2018.

      Table Tennis World Ranking 2018

Want to know, how I calculate the rating of the top Men players, read more here: Table Tennis World Ranking System by EmRatThich.

It's calculated by the 2017 results. If Ma Long just played only one tournaments in 2018, he will be ranked 1 again.

Excellent system, based on science and traditions in dozens of sports. ITTF overreacted to weaknesses in their old system and to current changes in table tennis structures. They threw the baby out with the bath water. One complicating factor for ratings is the splitting of the table tennis world in half, one side being China, the other being the rest of the world.

It seems pretty accurate... you will keep updating it?
I really appreciate the time you invested in this ranking system.
EDIT: One thing. Lee Sangsu's flag is south and north korea's flag together. You should replace it with only south korean flag.

Yes, excellent, EmRatThich - a really impressive piece of work. I shall use yours from now on. The ITTF one is now a joke, not a ranking table but a system of rewarding the good dogs who obey the rules. And who honestly thinks that Ding Ning is ranked 21 in the World just because the ITTF says so?

You could give Lee Sang Su and the other Koreans the United Korea flag!!! (see World Championships, Chiba 1991)

      Stick to coaching.
I didn't see any calculations on how to calculate ratings.
I don't think tournaments should have different ratings. The importance of the tournament has nothing to do with skill level.
I did like the idea of a 4-3 win not being as good as a 4-0 win but you didn't say how to implement it.

I think the best is something in the middle. In my opinion the players should be rewarded for playing a lot, because they take the risk of losing, top players shouldn't be able to dodge all the smaller tournaments because they have more to lose than to gain.

Also I think it shouldn't matter (ranking wise) if you win 4-0 or 4-3, a victory is a victory. Even a 4-0 can be very unlucky while a 4-2 might feel like a dominant performance

I think it matters. BUT, maybe I would use smaller differences between the winning ratio.

The code is rather long. The algorithm is based on the Probability of winning and Logistic Distribution.

After reading Central Ratings, and another ELO system, I have the first version. This version will be updated. Here is the code example of the "LUCKY and SCORE factors".
Code example of calculation for score effect

Behind this, there is some code to adjust these factors.

In many rating system like ATP, FIFA, there are the tournament coefficient.

I like how you try to make your own ranking coach but I will still favor the new ittf ranking. As a fan I would like to see the top players play more. Besides this new system greatly favors the top players. They just need to play more and they're more likely to win more, injuries aside. Also a true table tennis fan doesn't need to know the rankings to tell the winning chances of the players. It only matters if you're running a betting casino and you want people, who know very little of table tennis, to bet on the games.

In my ranking list Xu Xin is No#1!

My ranking favours who makes the most spectacular shots.

Oh wait, just made up a new one...

Now Jun Mizutani is first closely followed by Tiago Apolonia and the all time legend Mikael Appelgren.
FYI this ranking list favours who is the best fisher and lobber...

See, what I´m trying to say? Everybody has his own preferences. I think you got what i mean.
If your so upset with the new ranking system why you don´t try get a job at ITTF ? This is quite childish and immature IMHO

I said a long time ago that anyone can maintain an ELO system on their home computer, and that the goal for ranking system should be to support the activities of the federation running it.

      Yawn.

This kind of thing feeds the egos of the people dissatisfied that the current results don't reflect people's expectations. When the top pros are healthy and playing consistently, we will see how the new ITTF ranking system works. But this is just an excuse to feed the anger and insecurity of people who don't understand why the players who seem to be ranked lower than they should be got those rankings.

By the way, I am planning to run an ELO system for our club on my computer...
If anyone did something like this, what program did you use? I am searching for something easy to use.
And anyone has idea how to deal with handicap matches in a ranking system?

You want to create yours? You could always use Ratings Central for the calculation and just store your match results.
