Calderano's pitfall is his forehand short, where he hesitates whether to rip it, flick it or drop it short. FZD figured him out after the first 2 games and pinned him down that way.

The lack of predictability helped him in the first 2 sets though. Some of those rallies where he was mixing it up and not just trying for power won him a few points.

No question FZD was and is still the better player, Calderano looked a lot more tense than yesterday though. Those two first sets! Leading unexpectedly but he never looked like he was letting loose during the rallies. Also, he seemed more conservative when it came to taking initiatives.
I'm wondering in which proportions that's due to pressure (mighty amount of expectations built overnight), game plan (hell of a rallye player against him) or, well - a hell of a player against him, whichever way you look at it.

Congrats to both, onwards and upwards!

... And now for a bit of sunshine. ;)

Dead weight Ishikawa has caught the EJ bug.
Yes you are right I missed german open. It is a pitty I do not see Lin Gaoyuan to show if he is one od top chinese or not.

WR is a monthly thing. There is German Open later this month, where all WR top 10 players will play and the results will affect April's WR.

The opposition on the international stage is probably higher than a couple of years ago, so it's unfair to compare LGY's performance to young ML's or ZJK's. ML had to go through quite a few losses before peaking too, and ZJK... wait where is ZJK? In a gala dinner?

16-year-old ML won Junior WJTTC, the second time of attendance while LGY attended 4 WJTTC (age 14-17) and never won gold, losing to Song Hongyuan, Koki Niwa and Fan Zhendong in the final respectively. ML has never failed qualification of ITTF World Tour since 17 while LGY still struggled in qualification at age of 22. Junior events included, since 2003 ML lost to non-CNT players 26 times out of 460+ matches while since 2009 LGY lost to non-CNT players 29 times out of 160+ matches. ML was selected to CNT WTTTC lineup since age of 18 and became the youngest world champion by then while LGY still has to fight for his first WTTTC spot at 23. ML lost to WH at WTTC semifinals but he still got at least bronze medals since 21 while LGY did not make to QF at 22.
China National Games are probably the most difficult TT tournament on planet. ML won singles bronze at age of 17, silver at age of 21 and LGY has never qualified for China National Games so far. ML got his first CTTSL MVP at age of 20 and LGY has never got one although he was a favorite in the past season, finally surpassed by FZD and an injured ML.
Yes, it is quite unfair to compare LGY's performance to young ML's...

FZD found himself in a deep hole because he kept going for Calderano's backhand in those 2 games, where the latter was ready for it. I guess that was Mounie's plan, and it worked, for the most part. What didn't go as planned was probably the lopsided score. They didn't prepare for that. If Calderano could be more confident in using the chiquita for those forehand shorts, which won him many points, we could see a different outcome. One thing is for sure, he needs to work on his forehand flick. He needs to flick kill those loose balls to his forehand short.

It takes one to know one.
Remember FZD was bashed by Cai Zhenhua after the Youth Olympics 2014 for being monotone? Where he received only with the chiquita? It's all chiquita...chiquita...chiquita. He's better now, switching between drop shot and...chiquita.

Yeah, that's my point. Calderano is just like FZD 3 years ago in some ways. I am sure many coaches prefer that problem to the alternatives.

And this is also Fan's weakness as well. He just chiquitas those ball too or short pushes them when it feels awkward. He has worked a lot on his forehand flick but rarely ever uses it.
