I played in a tournament once. It wasn't an open. I qualified by playing in a college tournament and coming in 4th. The top 3 qualified for the next level which was a "sectional," One of the the top 3 was injured and couldn't attend, so I got to play as an alternate. The format was a double-elimination. I don't remember all of the specifics, but the first round was seed protect, with the top seed playing the bottom seed and so on. I was an unknown and rightly seeded last. I got killed by the top seed and had the opportunity to play one more game in the "losers" bracket which I lost as well.

Are modern Table Tennis tournaments using this format or something else? Also, in the tournament that I played in, would the format have had me playing the top remaining seed in the "losers" bracket? Would the winners in the "losers" bracket have the opportunity to get back into the main draw, or would they always be playing for lower places?
