Footwork - Need to break a bad habit

I need to improve my footwork when moving side to side (and some times even front to back). Instead of smooth graceful steps I seem to take hard awkward jumps when I'm under pressure and need to move side to side.

Any recommended footwork drills for lighter, softer, efficient side to side footwork? I mainly I need to stop taking my feet too far off the ground.

I am gunna say ONE thing that will revolutionize your ability to move laterally with quickness instinctively.

Before opponent strikes the ball (like after you or your partner in doubles strikes it), be sure to spread legs a good deal, and bend your knees. Do a couple mini hops.

Right when opponent strikes the ball, or JUST BEFORE, bend the knees an inch... you will be so ready to move, your body will almost move itself. Your eyes will see the ball and you won't even think, you will just be moving.

It is a fact that it is impossible to move in a timely manner if you are upright and feet close together.
