That seems super strange, not sure how asking to use a spare bat would be considered an advantage, if anything its a disadvantage for zhou yu

It looked like he got a red card to me?? I might be wrong and I was watching without sound but it looked like he came back to the table, ripped off part of his rubber in front of the umpires and then asked to change his bat?! Then, the umpire took his bat, got another official who came back with a red card.
Wait, you mean he ripped of part of his rubber on his own on purpose? Or by mistake?

That seems strange though.

On his own and definitely on purpose. I pulled the video back a bit to see why it had stopped. He came back to the table, turned away from one umpire and pulled the rubber back a bit, then turned back to the same umpire and showed him the bat. The other umpire could see everything and took the bat away. Then, lots of discussion and now it says DSQ on the results page.

Could be that it had started coming off a little beforehand but he definitely ripped it a bit more and i think the way he did it made it look like he was trying to hide it. Maybe he wanted to change and figured the umpire would just let it go??

Can't imagine a back up blade would give any sort of advantage though seeing as the idea is basically to get it as similar to your other blades as possible.

The backup blade they use is the same as their primary one, isn't it? So clearly there is no advantage of changing I guess.

Even if it was a different one, it would be a disadvantage, as he is used to the one playing at the moment.
Anyway, none of these make sense, maybe the ref made a mistake, which is kinda unlikely too.
