Marvellous 12 (地表最强十二人) 2019

Preliminary details for this year's Marvellous 12 have been published sporadically over the past two days. In a nutshell, it will be broken down into two main phases.

Phase 1 – Selection of Final 6 (12 to 17 February 2019)

15 and 16 players from each of the men's and women's team respectively will be selected to participate in a round-robin competition – successful selection is based on his/her performance in 2018, both internally and internationally. Six of them from each team will then progress to Phase 2.

Updated as of 17 Feb: The players who have emerged victorious are as follows:
- Zhao Zihao, Xu Chenhao, Fang Bo, Zhou Kai, Yu Ziyang, Xue Fei
- Sun Yingsha, Chen Xingtong, Wang Yidi, Gu Yuting, Sun Mingyang, He Zhuojia

Phase 2 – Actual 'Marvellous 12' (28 February to 3 March 2019)

The twelve winners from phase 1 will face off against the following seeded players in a round-robin format again:

Women's Team: Ding Ning, Liu Shiwen, Chen Meng, Zhu Yuling, Wang Manyu, Wu Yang
Men's Team: Ma Long, Xu Xin, Fan Zhendong, Lin Gaoyuan, Liang Jingkun, Wang Chuqin (Zhang Jike voluntarily withdrew because he felt that his training over the past months has not been very routinised)

The eventual winner and runner-up will each gain one out of the five available WTTC Singles Event slots allowed.

Finalised List of Players (21 Feb)

Women: Ding Ning, Liu Shiwen, Chen Meng, Zhu Yuling, Wang Manyu, Wu Yang, Sun Yingsha, Chen Xingtong, Wang Yidi, Gu Yuting, Sun Mingyang, He Zhuojia
Men*: Xu Xin, Fan Zhendong, Lin Gaoyuan, Liang Jingkun, Wang Chuqin, Zhao Zihao, Xu Chenhao, Fang Bo, Zhou Kai, Yu Ziyang, Xue Fei, Yan An

*Ma Long has withdrawn from the trials to focus on recovering his knee

Schedule of Matches (updated 22 Feb)

All matches will be streamed live on QQ sports while CCTV5 will only cover some of them. Alternatively, ITTF will also broadcast the event on its Youtube account ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRwU19SxD4w).

How about Zheng Peifeng?

Of the three major young penholders in CNT, I like Zhao Zihao, Xue Fei, and Zheng Peifeng, in that order. Xue Fei has great power and fundamental, but is sorely lacking in tactical sense. This is the reason he's not been doing well outside of junior level competitions. Zheng Peifeng has good service and is well balanced in attack and defense, but he is lacking in power and ability for topspin rallies away from table. Zhao Zihao has good power and is good at topspin rallies. He has better tactical sense than Xue Fei, so I feel like Zhao has the best chance getting a spot.

Sure.

http://sports.sina.com.cn/others/pingpang/2019-01-25/doc-ihqfskcp0409415.shtml & https://cn.ittf.com/2019/01/chn-national-team-qualify-for-wttc/

Also I thought it will be nice to share this thread that I chanced upon on the Chinese forum (http://www.pingpangwang.com/thread-243504-1-1.html), which basically compares how the Chinese, South Korean and Japanese teams select their players for the upcoming WTTC2019 Singles Event.

Japan
1. Highest ranked player in January 2019 [ended]
2. Second highest ranked player in January 2019 [ended]
3. Selection Trials Champion [ongoing; phase 1 concluded; phase 2 resumes on 2 March]
4. National Championships Winner [ended]
5. One player who has managed to win two gold medals in the ITTF World Tour 2018 [ended]
6. Japanese National Table Tennis Association reserves the right to recommend specific players as they deem fit

As of 1 Feb, four slots from each of the men and women's teams have been decided – Kasumi Ishikawa [1], Ito Mima [2,4,5], Miu Hirano, Sato Hitomi & Harimoto Tomokazu [1], Niwa Koki [2], Jun Mizutani [4], Yoshimura Kazuhiro. Miu Hirano [WR#9], Sato Hitomi [WR#12] and Yoshimura Kazuhiro [WR#66; Winner of Hong Kong Open] do not fulfil the first five requirements but they were deemed to have performed well enough against the top 30 non-Japanese players in 2018 to be merited a place.

South Korea
1. Four slots to be determined by internal trials (all 38 players will be split into two groups and the top two performers from each group will receive entry tickets to WTTC2019)
2. Last slot to be determined by the Korean National Table Tennis Association

As of 1 Feb, the results of the internal trials [http://sports.sina.com.cn/others/pingpang/2019-02-01/doc-ihrfqzka2997610.shtml] have been released.

Men – Jang Woojin [Group 1: 16 wins & 2 losses], Lee Sangsu [Group 1: 15 wins & 3 losses], Bak Ganghyeon [Group 2: 16 wins & 2 losses], Jeoung Young-sik [15 wins & 2 losses] – no surprises here since the three core male players have all made it to the top.

Women – KIM Hayeong [Group 1: 17 wins & 1 loss], Lee Eunhye [Group 1: 16 wins & 2 losses], Choi Hyojoo [Group 2: 18 wins & 0 losses], Kim Byeolnim [Group 2: 15 wins & 3 losses] – none of the core female players made the top 2. Jeon Jihee was 4th in Group 1, Seo Hyo-won placed 3rd in Group 2 while Yang Ha-eun pulled out due to a shoulder injury.

The author of the thread is of the opinion that the Japanese system spurs players to work the hardest because there are different ways to get a place for the singles event, South Korea's the most just (winner gains a slot; as straightforward as that) but also cold (one chance only) while China's the least convincing since Marvellous 12 only determines 1 out of the 5 slots. Entertaining read ;)

To be precise, the author's exact wording indicates that the JNT system is the fairest; the KNT system is the cruelest; the CNT system is the most expedient.

Have to say cruelty works. KNT has produced way more olympic gold medalists than JNT.
Most people probably never knew about this, but the KTTA was in turmoil between 2004 and 2008. It was a period of non-stop and fierce political infighting.

I don't know the specifics for the Seoul Olympics, but for Athens, Chon Young Seok, the then President of KTTA(01/2004-07/2008), and a controversial one at that, actually intervened in the selection process and "urged" KTS to retire and turn to coaching without any transition period, who had just finished 1st place above RSM and JSH in the trial. The reason given was that "since beating China is nigh impossible, may as well focus on promising youngsters." Also, the women selections were accused of nepotism and collusion.

Updates as of 11 Feb 2019

According to this thread (http://www.pingpangwang.com/thread-244739-1-1.html), CNT has just announced the list of players who will participate in phase 1 (12 to 16 Feb). Instead of 12 from each of the male and female team as mentioned previously, there are 15 selected from the former and 16 from the latter. What remains unchanged is that there are still only 6 slots available for each team.

Men's Team: Fang Bo, Yan An, Zhou Yu, Xue Fei, Liu Dingshuo, Zhao Zihao, Zhou Kai, Xu Chenhao, Ren Hao, Xia Yi Zheng, Ma Te, Zhu Linfeng, Zheng Peifeng, Zhou Qihao, Yu Ziyang

Women's Team: Chen Xingtong, Mu Zi, Feng Yalan, Che Xiaoxi, Li Jiayi, Liu Fei, Zhang Qiang, Gu Yuting, Liu Xi, Liu Gaoyang, Zhang Rui, Wang Yidi, Chen Ke, He Zhuojia, Sun Mingyang, Sun Yingsha

Round robin format will take on the best of five games.

Presumably because of Ito's victory during Swedish Open 2018, the CNT has stated that 2 of the 6 slots for the women's team must be given to offensive players using pimpled rubbers. If the top six performing players all happen to use inverted or other non-pimpled rubbers, those in 5th and 6th places will be replaced by the top two performing pimpled attackers. This essentially means that He Zhuojia, Mu Zi, Sun Mingyang and Zhang Rui (Liu Fei uses pimpled rubber too but is a defender and thus not privy to this 'special privilege') will vie for two openings while the remaining 8 will duke it out for the remaining four. Of course if it happens that two or more of the four pimpled players do shine and emerge victorious automatically, then this rule needs no enforcement.

That is amazing. That you can set a quota on equipment like that. That team objectives trump individual fairness to that degree would bring about a law suit in the US...

"would" makes it sound like we are talking about an imaginative situation... Isn't Wang Chen suing USATT for exactly this? It looks like every committee is copying the "unfair" system from China/Germany.

Now is not a good time for unpopular (whatever this means) TT players.

Well, it's the same concept as the affirmative action.

Pips players are the minority nowadays. It's often considered an inferior style. In China, players who can't make the cut with double inverted often turn to pips on the coach's advice and their fate are sealed as they'll be treated like a 2nd option from here on. It's all thanks to Ito that opinions are starting to shift and changes are brought about.

It's also blatantly ridiculous from almost any standpoint. But the Chinese team can do what they want and still win and then be hailed as geniuses.

The thing with CNT is that they have been very consistent in the way they run the trials, that the rules are always adapted according to the immediate circumstances.

Honestly, even with the JNT system being touted as the fairest, where there are multiple ways to get a spot(WR/All-Japan/best T League win percentage/trial/board recommendation), the netizens in Japan still complain about the board selection of Hirano over Shibata. Like it or not, the way JNT runs things is getting more and more like CNT as the year goes by.

China is a collective culture that places collective needs over individual needs. Seeing how CNT do things from individualistic point of view, some of their actions appear unfair. I'll give you another example of this, every single CNT training facility has huge banners with messages like "National prestige over everything else." CNT players are expected to work hard and still make necessary sacrifices for national prestige.
Despite being an American, I think CNT system makes sense. It's almost like they are incorporating the game theory in the system. It's not just about winning individually, but also about winning as a team.
