I am partly taking a jab at someone like Wang Chen (and her supporters) who is not happy with how the next US Olympic team will be selected. Not so much because I don't think she has a point, but because she acts as if the people doing it are inherently corrupt and immoral.

China is a collective culture that places collective needs over individual needs. Seeing how CNT do things from individualistic point of view, some of their actions appear unfair. I'll give you another example of this, every single CNT training facility has huge banners with messages like "National prestige over everything else." Despite being an American, I think CNT system makes sense. It's almost like they are incorporating the game theory in the system. It's not just about winning individually, but also about winning as a team.

It will always be a puzzle I guess. Say there is somebody, the best in the country but with a very poor record against the "foreigners", and the second person in the country has an outstanding record against the foreigners ... Depending on the country you'll have different answers. In Poland it would be the first guy, but it's a valid question whether it makes sense, i.e. for the Olympics, where every country fights as a team ... and medal classification is being reported in the end. For WTTC I'd be more individualistic I think.

I remember the Matilda Ekholm case when, even though she qualified for the London (or Rio can't remember), her home organization didn't wanted to grant her a place, cause She had "little chances to reach a quarter final" ... She was granted it in the end - I think ... ?

This reminds me of Zhang Yimou's remark how the suffering and sacrifice endured by the performers were necessary to pull off the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics.

http://www.nbcnews.com/id/26292355/...ics_news/t/pain-sacrifice-ceremony-performers
“North Korea is No. 1 in the world when it comes to uniformity. They are uniform beyond belief! These kind of traditional synchronized movements result in a sense of beauty. We Chinese are able to achieve this as well. Though hard training and strict discipline,” he said. Pyongyang’s annual mass games feature 100,000 people moving in lockstep.

Performers in the West by contrast need frequent breaks and cannot withstand criticism, Zhang said, citing his experience working on an opera performance abroad. Though he didn’t mention specific productions, Zhang directed an opera at New York’s Metropolitan Opera in 2006.

“In one week, we could only work four and a half days, we had to have coffee breaks twice a day, couldn’t go into overtime and just a little discomfort was not allowed because of human rights,” he said of the unidentified opera production.

“You could not criticize them either. They all belong to some organizations ... they have all kind of institutions, unions. We do not have that. We can work very hard, can withstand lots of bitterness. We can achieve in one week what they can achieve in one month.”

...Despite the sacrifices, the student performers were grateful for the opportunity to participate in the historic event and view it as an honor.

“All the tears, the sweat, and sometimes even blood that we shed, I now think it was quite worth it,” said Ren Yang, 17, also of the Tagou school. “When we performed that night, all that I could feel in my heart was joy. Pure joy.”

These 2008 bronze Fou drummers were unpaid.

3 renditions of the character "和(harmony)" were formed with those 40-pound boxes by 897 performers while in adult diapers so they could stay inside for 6 hours in preparation.

Interestingly, Zhang Yimou revealed that the curtain calls at the end of the Fou drum and movable type were at the suggestion of NBC.

Ironically, Wang Chen's case is an object lesson of lack of harmony, which is the cardinal value of Confucianism that is deeply rooted in the Chinese culture.

whether you think one set of moral standards is superior to the other, you can't help but be impressed by China, whenever they choose to take things seriously.

About three years ago when I visited China, China's air quality was terrible. In Beijing, the sun was only slightly visible. The sky was mostly gray. Shanghai was better than Beijing, but not by much. I just visited China again. This time, I'm really impressed by the progress China has made on improving air quality. The air there seems only slightly worse than the US now.
Yeah, I agree. If China is serious about doing something, they do it right quickly.

Updates as of 16 Feb (Saturday)

End of phase 1 for the women's team and the six players to have made it to the next phase are: Sun Yingsha, Chen Xingtong, Wang Yidi, Gu Yuting, Sun Mingyang and He Zhuojia.

3bc674a4ly1g085um5bn5j22zm28qhdu.jpg

Detailed Breakdown of Ranking

1) Sun Yingsha 15W & 0L
2) Chen Xingtong 13W & 2L (to Sun Yingsha and Feng Yalan in case you were wondering)
3) Wang Yidi 12W & 3L
4) Gu Yuting 9W & 6L
5) Sun Mingyang 8W & 7L
6) Liu Gaoyang 8W & 7L (one of whom included Sun Mingyang)
7) He Zhuojia 7W & 8L
8) Che Xiaoxi 7W & 8L (one of whom included He Zhuojia)
9) Liu Xi 7W & 8L (both to Che Xiaoxi and He Zhuojia)
10) Li Jiayi 6W & 9L
11) Chen Ke 6W & 9L (one of whom included Li Jiayi)
12) Feng Yalan 6W & 9L (both to Chen Ke and Li Jiayi)
13) Liu Fei 5W & 10L
14) Mu Zi 5W & 10L (one of whom included Liu Fei)
15) Zhang Rui 3W & 12L
16) Zhang Qiang 3W & 12L (one of whom included Zhang Rui)

Unfortunately, the top six players must include at least two pimpled attackers so non-pimpled Liu Gaoyang, who placed sixth, lost her slot to He Zhuojia.

They either have a CNT specific tie breaker or use the international. The international is game scores with the highest ratio of games won to games lost being the tie breaker when all 3 matches are lined up and if game scores don't do it, use point scores. If this doesn't work then they have an internal tiebreaking method.

That's what the 2nd last column is for - Game Won/Lost.

2 Xu Chenhao, 3:1 vs 12, 1:3 vs 15 -> 4:4 = 2
12 Zhao Zihao, 1:3 vs 2, 3:0 vs 15 -> 4:3 = 1
15 Fang Bo, 3:1 vs 2, 0:3 vs 12 -> 3:4 = 3
