This a a cruel sport sometimes, which makes you wonder if the format of an individual world championship once every two years is a good one.
The WTTC is a huge event. Even 6-12 months before it starts it's being talked about as the goal players are training for, and it is supposed to be the ultimate test to see who can step up in the 'big moment'. But isn't this a bit too much?
Imagine that instead of having 4 Grand Slams every year, Federer, Nadal and Djokovic only had 1 'World Championship' every two years. That's about 6-7 top tier events with the three of them clashing against one another, as opposed to the dozens we have had. Tennis history would have been so much poorer.
In TT, the vast majority of epic matches between all time greats is being played on the pro tour which is important but still secondary to the WTTC and Olympics. It's very easy to become an underachiever this way.
