ML did not play too bad vs FZD. It was just that FZD is getting used to ML's trickery and played with higher consistency. Some games were tight and luck was just on FZD's side this time. Table tennis karma as Adam Bobrow says was with FZD this time. FZD earned it rather than ML gave it away. So, kudos to FZD !!

Well, the way I see it is ML played poor all three matches this Japan Open, against lesser opponents he can get away with it, but against FZD it's not good enough. ML's energy level was clearly much lower than in recent tournaments.

Ma Long seemed to me as completely else.
I mean - was he even there? You know when Ma Long is there.
Today he wasnt..

It is quite normal to feel that a (star) player has low energy and motivation when he loses. Because thats what makes the difference between winning and losing when levels of players are so close. FZD is 2 out of 3 against ML this year so lets give credit where it is due.

Many folks are also saying he was just tired against JYS but the fact is he almost lost to JYS in Rio. ML has trouble against players able to hit his far forehand parallel from BH. JYS did it and FZD did it even better today.

I also observed it many times when ML is down , he gives out vibes of not being motivated to catch his opponent off guard and then, suddenly changes gears to gain upper hand. It is part of the mental game ML plays.

ML was playing really well in terms of form but his tactics were stubbornly stupid. you dont go BH to BH all the timewith one of the best players in BH and u have just a consistent BH but not a TOP BH. FZD outplayed him totally but, i dont think we will see him play so freely and dominating in a bigger event. he is too cautious and havent found the balance needed yet

I don't believe the Czech open was actually a platinum event that year.

He would have specifically said platinum because those have noticeably different player lineups, eg the CNT big boys come out to play.

Random CNT players do win non-platinum events all the time.
You're right, I didn't notice he said platinum.

ML was a bit too slow in this tournament compared to other young Chinese players. The #599 in the world is amazing...
