Hello
a Friend of mine wants to switch from 12 years playing shakehand to penholder.
He has 1269 Points German Ranking.
He already orderd a tibhar samsonov force pro black edition penhold version.
But with the rubber he is unsure. He tought about Xiom Vega Euorpe or Japan in 2.0mm for the backhand and maybe Vega Pro or Vega Japan or Omega 7 Europe for the forehand in Max thickness.

What would you recommend for him as rubber?

It depends on his style of play. SFBE is quite thick and might cause some issues for RPB especially banana flick.

As a penholder the main weapon is FH. I wouldn't recommend Vega Japan for FH as its spin/speed is too low. Vega pro and O7E are a good options.

Hello, the blade ordered by your friend is a 7ply all wood, normally used for short pips, like the avalox, clipper, etc..
My recommendation is to return the blade before using it and buy something with 5 ply, all wood.YEO if he wants a fast blade or something like Stiga OC can get the job perfectly done.About rubbers, from my point of view, not using a Chinese rubber on FH is a waste, but there are some great PH players using tensor-like rubbers. At least try it, is worthy.

He's been playing for 12 years and the options look well thought out enough. Samsonov Force is a good blade. For backhand, I tried the Vega Pro, Euro, and Asia, Asia was the fastest and best feeling. Personally I think Vega Pro is a little too soft for penhold forehand. Over the table play benefits from the touch/feel and linear response of harder Chinese rubbers.

okay i tell him about the blade.

So rubber wise
he dont boost anything, so i am not sure which chinese rubber would be good?
Maybe friendship battle 2, bloom power or h3 neo?
or a hybrid rubber?

and for backhand tends more to vega asia or europe?

When I came back to tabletennis I also tried to switch to penholder play.

My rubber combination:
FH: DHS TG-3 Neo (Skyline 3) - it's a kind standard rubber for PH FH
BH: I tad softer than my shakehand backhand rubber. Maybe your friend should have a look If he can get a slightly softer version of the rubber he used with shakehand.

Stick to DHS rubber. Any rubber with the word Neo has been pre boosted.

TG3 has a bit more control but less spin than Hurricane 3. TG3 can be a good starter.

okay thank you

than i guess it is going to be a vega asia on the backhand because he played a vega pro and vega aisa is the same with a softer top sheet.

okay but i read that even the neo versions could be to slow, specially if he goes in the mid distance to counter loop or am i wrong?
If he still gets the force pro maybe but what if he gets a slower 5 ply blade?

If you put in 40% strength, you get a speed of 6 from H3 and 8 from Vega Pro. That's what people mean when they said Hurricane is "slow".

But when you put in 80% H3 can produce speed and spin that surpass Tenergy05.

Most people don't bother coz H3 can tire them out.

I play H3 coz it brings out the best of me.

Oh okay
so would be Yasaka Ma Lin Extra offensive with skyline 3 neo and Xiom Vega Asia 2.0 on backhand a good combi or better vega europe.
And would be a Blade with Limba outer ply better because he wants to loop more like xuxin not so much blocking like Ma Lin?

The 301 is not a Viscaria clone!
301: fibers directly on the ayous core (it is a Koto-Outer-Version of the HL5 blade)
Viscaria: fibers directly under the outer ply and with a kiri core

I really like the 301, I think this should fit an agressive PH style quite good.

Can you tell us what your collegue is playing currently with shakehand grip?

well it is going to be the YEO because it is on sale
but with the dhs neo rubber he is a little afraid that it is to slow and maybe a little bit more with a factory tuned effect or so
backhand is going to be vega asia in 2.0
