Skyline v. Hurricane

I had asked this question on XX's equipment post but no one responded so why not try again?

What is the difference between the DHS hurricane and the skyline series of rubbers? Why does it seem like shakehand players gravitate towards hurricane where as penhold players towards skyline?

I've played with H3 and TG3, never with the H2 and TG2. Deciding to give the TG2 a try to see why XX prefers it.

Mostly in the pips configuration of the topsheet. Hurricane series was originally deigned for shakehander, whereas Skyline series was optimized for penholders.

Hurricane is made for powerlooping an finishing points with power and spin. Skyline is made for consistency of loops and looping endless balls back. To get a good gauge on the difference, watch Ma Long (Hurricane) and compare to Xu Xin (Skyline).

Is XX not power looping and doesn't finish point with power ans spin?

first of, that sounds super psuedo sciency. Second, even if its true, how exactly is that accomplished? what are the differences (pips or otherwise) between the two that require different branding?

Strictly speaking of Skyline 3 vs Hurricane 3:

Skyline has denser and lower pips. Maximizes surface area thus more grip and should feel harder than Hurricane.

Cheers.

in first ... the main difference is the speed ... tg2 is slower ....then is here the control ... this is a big difference .. tg2 had a better control especially on slower speeds and over the net play. Better block is also on side of tg2 .... Tg2 generally is more suited for passive game , but because of the pimple structure has a better spin and underspin is easy to overloop . .... what else do you want to know ?

ps.: i already wanted to answer you , but i was to lazy . sorry

Thanks for the response. I've played with the TG3N and debating getting a TG2N. How well does the TG2 perform away from the table? Why do you think XX favors the TG2 (and not the TG3) given his aggressive, fast, away-from-table style?

I just made the switch and I’m appreciating TG2 over H3 a ton. So much more control in the passive and short game. The aggressive shots and looping has a lower trajectory so I’m clipping the net much more frequently l and occasionally shooting long. Just an adjustment period until I’m used to it I hope.

Loving it though!!

I don't have all technical differences between these rubbers, but I have used them all in NEO version except the TG3. The H3N is superb for brush looping (like all the others). Very good speed and quite high arc. The H2N is about the same in speed as the H3N, but the arc is a little bit lower, and personally I feel a little bit better control in the H2N.

The Skyline rubbers are slower. I actually had the TG3N on my backhand a couple of years ago, but never on forehand. The TG2N feels like the H3N when looping, but it's a bit slower. It's better in the short game and control is much better. I recall that the arc was about medium high as well. After a few months the rubber was detached from the sponge right above my handle. I have seen reviews of the Skyline rubbers where users have had the same experience as me.

I sort of have a similar experience but comparing H3 neo provincial to Skyline Neo TG2. TG2 is a bit more controlled on the lower power/passive shots and is definitely a notch slower. H3 always seemed to have higher throw and more if a pronounced arch.

H3 has generally more spin on shots overall, but TG2 has higher spin potential on harder shots (loops, drives) IMO (on my set up - Nittaku Acoustic).

TG2 is lower throw, so a bit less margin for error when drive/looping.

For me, H3 is easier to play with overall. TG2 is easier on passive control and more fun to attack with.

I am sticking with skyline for now.

Small update after switching set-ups:

Now using DHS Hurricane Hao 2 blade and compared TG2 provincial to H3 Neo provincial - both blue sponge:

TG2 pro is definitely slower and more consistent. It’s definitely faster than the TG2 and TG2 neo versions and has plenty of power and spin to win points but you typically are looking for spin variation or placement to win those points. Longer rallies (vs. H3 Neo Pro), but mentally satisfying when you win. Touch shots are great (serves & pushes)!

H3 Neo Pro is longer trajectory, more elastic, higher catapult and speed. The spin, I can’t tell which is spinnier comparing to TG2 pro, but the penetrating power is unreal. This rubber forces you to be on time and execute proper technique otherwise it punishes you with the ball soaring off the table. It’s definitely a satisfying feeling to easily blow shots by your opponent. High potential if one can master control of it, especially the lower input shots like pushing and serving. I haven’t gotten used to that extra catapult so my pushes are long and my serves are just...off right now.

Maybe a good compromise between would be lightly boosting the TG2 pro. But... I’m not really into that, so I’m going to see how I adjust to H3 Neo pro and use the TG2 pro as a back up or for days where I have particularly bad touch and feel.
