      Benefits of table tennis

      Benefits of table tennis

First things first. Table tennis is not about reflexes. Saying it is so is a common mistake.

Reflex is body’s natural and unconscious response to stimuli. You may ask “what is table tennis about then?”. Well, it is all about REACTIONS.

What are the components of reaction? How does a reaction occur and manifest itself?

A reaction occurs and manifests itself with and through five senses. Sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch. These are the physical elements. Are there other constituents to reaction? Of course there are: Psychological and mental elements all govern reactions.

As table tennis coaches, we expect table tennis to improve brain’s control over physical activity. It is called motor coordination of hand and eye. That is the most important contribution table tennis can offer.

However this alone is not enough because all our body has a role in the stroke we do in table tennis. Legs and feet and all parts of our body -except for our tongue and thus the sense of taste- contribute and coordinate with each other when we do the stroke.

In the light of the foregoing, let’s take a moment to count many physical and mental benefits of table tennis.

      PHYSICAL BENEFITS:

At beginner level, we aim to boost the athlete’s aerobic and anaerobic features.

      i. Increasing the lung capacity
      ii. Breathing right
      iii. Running at different speeds
iv. Jump-rope workouts and control over breath

At the second level, we work on endurance, strength; so improving the physical performance in general.

      At the third level;

      i. Reaction speed
      ii. Elasticity and reactivity
      iii. Speed training
      iv. Coordination
      v. Analysis
      vi. Improving motor functions

      PSYCHOLOGICAL AND MENTAL BENEFITS:

Table tennis also helps with overcoming psychological issues and thus improving mental health. Here are some positive outcomes that your children will benefit from table tennis:

      1. Increasing the attention span
      2. Increasing motivation
      3. Overcoming fear of failure, fear of making mistakes
      4. Overcoming panic attack
      5. Being dedicated and more decisive
      6. Learning to trust oneself
      7. Gaining tactical analysis skills
      8. Stress management
      9. Overcoming fear of change
      10. Learning team spirit
      11. Gaining confidence in expressing oneself.

Although I do not agree with all that I read here, because I think I do partially relay on muscle memory, I would really want to find some workout plan. Maybe we could come up with one? I do rope jumping every day (first of all normal ones, then alternating legs)
