Long story short, CNT is not playing in WTT Doha.

Must be super dissapointing to organisers etc for this to happen. Same time honestly no one can be surprised and no one can make judgement on these decisions as situation globally still bad.

Still praying Olympics can go ahead but between now and then alot needs to improve

Interesting ... Japan will also withdraw the application?

Think most teams will withdraw. If Team China not attending believing health is a risk which is true, most teams would agree that not worth it, probably see more beneficial training domestically.

Dissapointing to organisers but that's life

Team Guangdong has announced their line-up for the National Games (to be held in September), but the preliminaries/qualification tournament will commence 20 March.

Men's Team (proceed directly to main draw as winners of the National Championships last year): Fan Zhendong, Lin Gaoyuan, Zhou Qihao, Zhang Chao, Handsome Boy

Women's Team: Liu Shiwen, Huang Yingqi, Zhang Chi, Zhang Meizhu, Peng Shishi

Men's Singles: Fan Zhendong (proceed directly to main draw), Lin Gaoyuan (proceed directly to main draw), Zhou Qihao, Zhang Chao, Handsome Boy, Placeholders 1 & 2

Women's Singles: Liu Shiwen (proceed directly to main draw), Huang Yingqi, Zhang Chi, Zhang Meizhu, Peng Shishi, Placeholder 1

Men's Doubles: Fan Zhendong/Lin Gaoyuan, Zhou Qihao/Zhang Chao

Women's Doubles: Huang Yingqi/Zhang Chi, Zhang Meizhu/Peng Shishi

Mixed Doubles: Lin Gaoyuan/Liu Shiwen, Zhou Qihao/Zhang Meizhu, Placeholder Pairs 1-3

Actually I just wanted to talk about XD. There's a rule stating that the Olympics XD representatives can advance to the main draw of the National Games directly (奥运会混双项目参赛组合直接挺进16强), so that begs the question of why LSW is still pairing with LGY to fight for a spot in the main draw, unless LSW's XD slot is not as secure despite official confirmation on the ITTF website. Or are the coaches making her play so that she can get back into the competitive groove more smoothly? Or is this provincial pride, a desire to prove that they don't need players from another province (XX is from Team Shanghai) to win? Intriguing.

That's not intriguing at all ... since it's a complete different competition that has nothing to do with olympics qualification system. You're just... off topic then.
1- XX/LSW is qualified AND CONFIRMED on the official ITTF list for the olympics XD
https://www.ittf.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Tokyo_2020_XD_2020_04_21.pdf
2- The National Games will be held in... September, after the olympics right... ?
3- "can advance", but not "must advance", right ... ? therefore this is NOT a MANDATORY rule.

In fact, the ITTF list does not care about provincial preferences in CTTA, the CTTA has already CONFIRMED it was XX/LSW, therefore they let the provinces do whatever they want for a complete different competition held AFTER the olympics. I think that's fair, they want to preserve the "provincial competition spirit".

From what I understand per the prospectus, it has to do with quota. Guangdong can potentially gain an extra entry by entering LGY/LSW for qualification.

LGL has stressed multiple times since 2019 that he has to prepare for the worst case scenario and must have a back-up plan. From the entries for the World Tour in 2019 and the Tokyo 2020 Simulation last year, there are likely at least 2 extra pairings in consideration for Tokyo 2020:

1. XX/LSW;
2. XX/SYS;
3. WCQ/SYS.

The second one seals WMY's fate, on top of losing to FTW in WTTC 2018. WMY's best chance is as the reserve player over DN. OTOH, SYS passed the stress test at the WWC 2020, on top of playing 2 singles in the final of TWC 2019 after DN strained her lower back in the semi. The third one is the least likely after Qatar Open 2020.

Li Sun shared that Liu Shiwen, Chen Meng, Sun Yingsha and Wang Manyu demonstrated keen desire to participate in the upcoming Olympics (unofficial official statement about China's Tokyo lineup?). Liu Shiwen's recovery in particular, based on her performances in the National Games and closed-door training camp, was pleasantly surprising.

ZYL: It was only lip service when I said in an interview that Tokyo 2020 has nothing to do with me... You mean I'm not one of the cores for real? But I'm the reigning Marvellous 12 Champion!

Qin Zhijian shared that the CNT is planning to hold trials for WTT China and WTTC some time between late April and early May (around Labour Day) to keep the players on their toes. It will likely be broadcasted as they are currently in discussion with mainstream media about bringing a feast for the fans' eyes.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-olympics-2020-coronavirus-idUSKBN2C208V
Tokyo Olympics might yet be cancelled due to COVID-19 - Japanese official
TOKYO (Reuters) -A senior Japanese ruling party official said cancelling this year’s Olympics in Tokyo remains an option if the coronavirus crisis becomes too dire, as a fourth wave of infections surges less than 100 days from the planned start of the Games.

“If it seems impossible to do it any more, then we have to stop, decisively,” Toshihiro Nikai, secretary general of the Liberal Democratic Party, said in comments to broadcaster TBS.

Cancellation is “of course” an option, Nikai said. “If the Olympics were to spread infection, then what are the Olympics for?” he added.

A key backer of Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, party heavyweight Nikai is known for his frank comments, which come as many other ruling party lawmakers have avoided discussing the hot button issue of a possible cancellation.

The world’s biggest sporting event has already been delayed by a year and is being held without international spectators.

Japan is grappling with rising coronavirus infections, with numbers trending higher in Tokyo after the government ended a state of emergency, and Osaka suffering a record number of cases.

The government is pushing ahead with preparations incorporating social distancing measures and other restrictions for the Games set to begin on July 23, with a scaled back torch relay underway.

“We’ll hold (the Games) in a way that’s feasible,” Taro Kono, a popular minister in charge of Japan’s vaccination drive, said on a separate TV programme, according to Kyodo News. “That may be without spectators,” he added.
LITTLE SUPPORT
Polls indicate little support in Japan for holding the Games during a global pandemic. “Canceling Olympics” was trending on Twitter in Japan on Thursday with more than 35,000 tweets from users.

“If this person says it, Olympics cancellation looks like a reality,” tweeted

Zhu Yuling seems like the type of person who's happy with where they are. Good on her. Table tennis could do with more of such role models especially from CNT where 必胜 mentality is so prevalient.

While there may still be uncertainty about the status of the Tokyo Olympics, I just wanted to provide an important update that may factor in China's Olympic Team selection. Last April 14, 2021, ITTF updated the ITTF Table Tennis World Ranking Regulations. On page 2 of the document, it says, "Seeding at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will be conducted in accordance with the Olympic Qualification Ranking, not the ITTF Table Tennis World Ranking." The Olympic Qualification Ranking differs from the current ITTF Table Tennis WR system because the former still follows the old 2020 World Ranking Regulation points system. In the Olympic Qualification Ranking, the WTT Doha Contender is given the same WR points as the old ITTF Challenge Plus event (Winner gets 1100 WR points) while the WTT Doha Star Contender is given the same WR points as the old ITTF World Tour Regular event (Winner gets 1800 WR points). However, in the Olympic Qualification Ranking, there is no expiration or depreciation of 2019 or 2020 WR Points and you only take the 8 best results of all events played from April 2019 to June 2021 (as opposed to the current WR system where points earned in 2021 WTT events are added on top of the best 8 results in events prior to 2021)

This differs from the original plan of ITTF in January where it wanted seeding to be based on the new WR system. (See page 12 of the old ITTF Table Tennis World Ranking Regulations posted in January 2021) This is likely the right call since the new WR system depreciated all WR points earned before 2021, which made the WR points earned in the 2 events played in WTT Middle East Hub weigh disproportionately more than all the points earned by players in 2019 and 2020 ITTF events such that those who were unable to make it to the Middle East Hub due to the pandemic were significantly disadvantaged.

Anyway, under the most recent Olympic Qualification Ranking (April 2021), SYS is ranked 2 while Ito is ranked 3 because Ito's WTT Doha Star Contender win of 1800 points (following the old ranking system) merely replaced her 8th best result, which was a SF finish in the WTGF of 1660 points. Because Ito winning WTT Doha Contender is basically only equivalent to winning a Challenge Plus event, Ito only gained 1100 WR points, which didn't even make it to her best 8 results. In the end, under the Olympic Qualification Ranking Regulations, Ito had a net gain of 140 points from the WTT Middle East Hub. Compare this to the new WR ranking system where Ito gained 1000 WR points outright on top of her past best 8 results WR points and you can see why Ito is still behind SYS in the Olympic Qualification Ranking.

Because of this change in the Tokyo 2020 Seeding Regulations, China has more of an incentive to send both CM and SYS for singles as it is the only way to guarantee both Chinese Women are drawn in opposite halves because ITTF did away with the Separation by Association Rule during the 2019 BoD meeting. Had Olympic seeding been done according to the original plan of basing it on the new WR system, Ito would be the 2nd seed and China couldn't guarantee their own players to be drawn in opposite halves whomever they selected. Of course, this isn't a guarantee that China will send both CM and SYS for singles since there are many other factors that it will consider in the selection, but this update does tip the scale slightly in their favor. With each country being required to submit their list of athletes Mid-May, it won't be long till we find out how China chooses to proceed.

While Olympic seeding is based on the July Olympic Qualification Ranking, it is safe to assume that it will barely change from the April Olympic Qualification Ranking because there are unlikely to be any more international events before the Olympics. Furthermore, ITTF also resolved to extend the expiration of events so that no events will expire in the July 2021 Olympic ranking list, so the July list will be very similar if not exactly the same as the April list. Originally, events that transpired from April to June 2019, which include the 2019 China Open, HK Open, and Japan Open were supposed to expire and not count towards Olympic seeding. This would have hurt players who gained significant WR points in these events such as SYS (who would lose the 2250 points she earned in the 2019 Japan Open) and LSW (who was runner-up and gained 1800 points in the same Japan Open). In fact, had ITTF not extended the validity of these events, SYS would have fallen below Ito to the 3rd seed and LSW would fall below CIC and Ishikawa to the 5th seed in the July 2021 Olympic Qualification ranking list.

Other noteworthy implications of adopting the Olympic Qualification ranking instead of the new ITTF Table Tennis WR for Olympic seeding are as follows:

 • Mixed doubles seeding under the most recent Olympic Qualification Ranking has XX/LSW seeded 1 and Mizutani/Ito seeded 2 as compared to the new WR which has LYJ/CIC seeded 1st instead of XX/LSW. This ultimately benefits the Japanese Pair as they will be guaranteed to be in the opposite half of the Chinese Pair, which should improve their medaling chances.
 • Wong Chun Ting/Doo Hoi Kem will now be seeded 4th in XD not 5th. Had the new WR system been used for seeding, the South Korean pairing of LSS/JJH would be seeded 4th because the Hong Kong pair's WR points would have depreciated on July 6th (Week 27) to a point where their points would be lower than the South Korean Pair's points due to the HK's non-participation in the Middle East Hub.
 • In Men's Singles, Hugo Calderano will be now seeded 4th and Lin Yun-Ju will be seeded 5th instead of the other way around.

That ranking update will have a huge impact on the lineup of women’s team and may very well be the final nail in the coffin for LSW’s case of playing singles. The risk of the CM/LSW winner playing against ITO for gold medal is just too high for the bureaucrats, it outweighs everything else. So it’s most likely CM/SYS play singles, LSW mixed double, and DN/WMY fighting for the fourth spot.
I don’t see any movement in men’s lineup at all.

CNT trials for WTT China and WTTC (which will double up as the second 'Mock Olympics') to be held from 3rd to 7th May. No details about format for now.

Regarding selection, there are many unofficial signals (e.g. CCTV promo for Olympics and publicity materials like the one below) of late pointing to LSW and CM for singles, and SYS for team. At the rate ITTF is going, separation by association may well be reinstated (assuming it was gonna be scrapped in the first place). End of the day, CNT sends whoever they want to lol.

At this moment, I don’t see LSW as a single player at all at Tokyo unless the separation-by-association rule is reinstated, which is highly unlikely this year. A poster wrote a detailed analysis on this rating/seeding change and stated CM/SYS would be much preferred singles selection. LGL responded to the post (he rarely does) with a thumps up and a praise “高手在民间”

I think the 2019 BoD notes (https://www.ittf.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Propositions_and_Resolutions_to_2019_BoD.pdf) indicate that China may still receive national association separation protections. The rationale for prop 16 is: The intent of the current rule is that players from the same Association, who often have to travel a long way, do not have to play matches against compatriots. However, this should only apply to the top players, with all others guaranteed not to meet in the first round proper. This will also make the draw much more simplified and easier to follow

I would assume that China qualifies as "top". Maybe they are just too lazy to make it so that Jang Woojin and Lee Sangsu don't play each other in the round of 32 or something. Also, does prop 16 mean that only the top four players will be seeded? I am pretty sure that will make the draw more chaotic and less easy to follow.
