Update on the new service toss rule proposed by JTTA during the ITTF AGM

Update on the new service toss rule proposed by JTTA during the ITTF AGM: the proposal was not accepted. Only 50.41% voted "Yes" to the change and they needed at least 75% for the proposition to pass.

Ma Young-Sam, the Head of the ITTF Umpire and Referees Committee opposed the passing of this new rule because of the following:
  1. Based on the proposed amendment, different players can toss the ball at different heights because some players are taller than others. This may raise a question of fairness.
  2. Players may squat or lower their heads when serving to circumvent this rule.
  3. This is disadvantageous to players who use the backhand serve.
  4. The service regulation should be applied to every person regardless of their ages and cannot be disregarded for young and elderly players. Otherwise, this will be confusing for both umpires and spectators.
  5. It is crucial that the opinion of players be taken before hastily passing this amendment.
JTTA apparently forgot that some of the best servers on their team (e.g. Ito, Hayata, Hirano) have very effective shovel serves, and while their shovel serves generally comply with the 16cm rule, they do not consistently toss the ball above their head height when they do these shovel serves. It's like JTTA is trying to undermine their own team and get their own players faulted on their serves.

To provide some context on the reference made in the 2nd photo, the 2016 World Junior Table Tennis Championships were held in South Africa with Ito, Hirano, Hayata, and Kato participating. However, there was a miscommunication and JTTA apparently failed to communicate to their players all the travel documents that needed to be secured before they can fly and be admitted by South Africa. This led to the team entering South Africa 3 days later than originally planned as everyone was running around Japan to get the necessary paperwork done to make the tournament. It's just funny because South Africa was coincidentally chosen to host the 2023 ITTF World Table Tennis Championships during the AGM, so history could repeat itself.

The BoD have descided to go on with the WTTTC from 27. february 2021 in Busan, but with only 32 or in worst case 16 teams. I have not seen the minutes from the meeting, but this is the news from some of the NA's.

With 32 teams it seems rather easy to pick the entries. But what if they want only 16 teams? Any guesses how to pick the teams that should be scrapped? France was placed 18 in Halmstad, but are WR 9...

CANCELLED FOR GOOD

https://www.ittf.com/2020/12/22/itt...nnis-championships-cancelled-amidst-pandemic/

More and more doubts about WTTC 2021 and Tokyo Olympics happening at all

Situation not improving. Lot of countries too have suspended travel so logistically can be hassell. Think cons just outweigh the pros.

Olympics honestly feels like IOC and Japanese gov playing poker to see who cracks first and shoulders the bill similar to earlier in the year. At this rate unlikely unless things improve quick.

China is like "no, don't come." Table tennis is fortunate that China is willing to take on the burden. Qualification events for other sports that were supposed to take place in China have been canceled one after another, with the latest one for wrestling delayed and moved to Kazakhstan. Getting there in normal times is already hard enough. Whatever the case, time is running out to determine the remaining quota before Tokyo 2020+1.

Last but not least, thumbs up to the UK for getting everyone in EU to "jump on" the no-deal Brexit, by coverin..., ahem, "trying to stamp out" the new strain since September until the shit hits the fan. Nice one, BoJo!
