Timo Boll: No idea what the percentage chance is, but I'm now running the 5th tournament in a row on Fan Zhendong in the earliest possible round! Well, first get through the 1st round and then we'll see.

shows the weakness of the current WR-system. Its kinda random and doesnt take into account which opponent you lost to. its great that alle the best players play in the worldtour now, but its far from perfect. qualifications are even worse. hayata was the prime example last year.

It is not random, it is about the stage in the event at which you lost, which is often determined by how well you played. Lucky draws are possible but it works out over time.

Just about every sport where major money flows in uses similar WR systems. Anyone can measure strength if you want to do that by building your own ELO system. In tennis, they do exactly what the ITTF is doing and no one complains about it. It's about time we realized that this system is a move in the correct direction. Hayata herself lost many key matches that she should have won - the system has nothing to do with it.

China donning their new jerseys for 2020.

Seems like Japan is the only other country which also comes up with new designs. Can't wait to see theirs too ~

Not impressed with the new jersey at all. Just look at LGY, that shirt looks anything but sporty.

Poor Timo. Next time he should use his right hand to handle the drawing
Would like to see ML vs FZD again. Have a feeling XX will have a tough time beating LGY this time.

Japan should change its Olympic entries from the men's senior team to the WJTTC team + Harimoto - seriously.

We can only hope that terrible luck doesn't repeat itself over and over again, but clearly it can happen to some players, like Timo meeting Fan Zhendong 5 times in a row in the earliest possible round. Just because you can't beat the #1 player doesn't mean you're not top 10 level with no chance to play other top 10 players. Same goes for Hayata who constantly met Chinese players at the earliest possible round last year. There must be some way to at least penalize bad losses and great wins, at least to a small extent because we would think bad luck will cancel itself out over time, but sometimes it just doesn't happen.

Well since you seem to understand the issue so well, why don't you propose your solution? Explain what would measure strength while not permitting the top players to play less. Other sports have played around with bonus points and ultimately stopped them.

And why don't you point out the cases when Hayata didn't meet such opponents and lost to say Lee Eunhye of Korea? Or her loss to Kato Miyu at the WTTC trials which set the tone for the year? Or her loss last year to Chineae players like Qiang Zhang who should be a level below her?

That table tennis is governed so strongly by national associations and related quotas is the problem but that affects everyone. Otherwise maybe the top 10 would be all Chinese on the women's side if all of them were allowed to play. Or maybe 9 Chinese and Mima Ito. But the point is that stop blaming the system primarily for Hayata's inconsistency. The old system may have helped her but it may have not as well. She had some bad losses as well.
