HAYATA wins 4-2 !!! yeah !!!! She's definitely playing at a very high pace and showing some beautiful attacking TT. Alas she is not super-consistent. Against FTW thats enough, but against top CNT players she can't afford all those mistakes.

Yeah, Hayata's shots are of very high quality, but she needs to improve on their consistency. It's the reason why she can lose Game 3 against Feng despite leading 6-1. However, it's also the reason why she can win Game 6 against Feng despite trailing 1-7. Some players lower shot quality slightly in order to improve consistency. However, I believe the better option would be to continue practicing those high quality shots, so she can execute them more consistently in future matches. Lowering shot quality may make one more consistent against non-Chinese players, but it also makes one less threatening against Chinese players since you need high quality shots to beat them.

An example to look at is Mima Ito. From 2015-2017, she had a number of huge wins against top players since she had high quality shots in her arsenal. However, she also lost in the early rounds often because these shots were "risky" and she couldn't execute them at a high percentage yet. In 2019, Ito's consistency improved significantly. She reached the later rounds of many tournaments and didn't lose to any non-Chinese foreigner. It's not because she lowered her shot quality to be more consistent, but it's because she continued practicing those high quality shots so that she can hit them at a higher percentage. It got to the point where those high quality shots were not considered "risky" for her anymore. If Hayata can manage to do the same, Japan's future will be even brighter.

In other news, Hayata's win means that she finally overtakes Kato in WR. She's now 5th in Japan and the highest-ranked attacking player among those in the running for the Olympic Alternate spot.

Unfortunately, Hayata’s advantage in ITTF ranking over Kato may be temporary - Hayata has serious deductions of old points when calculating the rating for March and April ....
But if Hayata successfully performs at the Hungarian Open (there are no Chinese women) and especially at the Qatar Open Championship (in Qatar, most likely, she will need to play in the qualification ...) - then she will gain a foothold ...

He won't be playing doubles in Tokyo. The pairings should've already told you they're using the doubles for tune-up.
