Is knowledge about your rating mandatory? Do you have to know your rating? Is rating calculation algorithm public? Can you check your rating now? If you know your current rating and your scoring in tournaments I believe I could write a program to approximate your ratings. If this crap comes through, then I am pretty sure we can do something about it.

When I read it, I understood it to mean you'd have to pay $25 if you weren't an active member. So as long as you have an active membership, you can still see it.

"Individual rating display...will only be available to current USATT members." "The new ratings access subscription will have no effect on current USATT members and their benefits."

Also if you buy a tournament pass, you'll have a 12 month access to it.

I would think this is for league players who don't play sanctioned events. If you want access to your league rating, you either need to sign up for a yearly membership or fork out the $25.

"The new ratings acces subscription is part of an effort by the USATT to prioritize services for current members and active tournament participants."

I like to be able to see my rating on a regular basis (It's public). I also follow my friend's ratings to see how they are doing.

Some people at my club are talking about switching to Ratings Central which had a better algorithm and no fee.

One of two things are going to happen: 1) My club will pay for my subscription to be able to enter league results (I will not be coerced into buying a USATT membership or rating subscription), or 2) We will move to RC which is a scientifically more sound rating system anyway.

We’re a semi socialist country so viewing our ratings are free and will forever be so.

One funny effect will be when US tourists (we get them every now and then) tries to enter a ranking event based on their USATT rating which no longer can be viewed by the outside world. My guess is that our tournament directors will place them with the unranked players.

I see that free market has already taken a toll on USATT lol. The miracles of capitalism.
Not free market capitalism. More like monopoly communism strong arm.

Usatt is the one and only organization existing to do what it does... take average joe amateur money and give it to cronies and the hpd kids who still need 10x more support.

If another org existed just to do what usatt does minus the hpd commitment, it could do so for under 1 million usd per year. That is reasonable income if players unite and grow tt.

In USA, there are a number of once a week clubs that have a league and use ratings central or another free service and post ratings.

The issue of competition is there is no competing organization to run tourneys and keep ratings. Pressure is mounting.
