Makes sense, seeing the Asian Century has arrived. Get ready to be Asianized, AGAIN, after 200 years. The world has come full circle.

Pundits have been touting this for a good while now. China expected this to happen by 2050, but COVID-19 has cut short the transition period by reducing/exposing the 列強 to/as 列弱.

Sure. Sports betting. Ishikawa won't like her odds.

https://europeangaming.eu/portal/la...signs-long-term-deal-with-world-table-tennis/
Steve Dainton, ITTF CEO & WTT director, said: “Partnering with IMG ARENA to distribute our sports betting live streaming and betting data rights is an important strategic development for WTT. IMG ARENA has a strong track record of working with federations and international sports organisations to both protect and grow sports via their innovative products and solutions.

Good choice. Dainton is arguably the 1st Asianized ITTF official. I love how he conducts interviews with Chinese media entirely in Putonghua. He even resides in Singapore now. In the extended one he did at the last Women's World Cup, he couldn't stress enough about working together with China in the future.

@2:24
After I became the CEO of the ITTF
what's changed?
The change is perhaps in thought
- Thought?
Say, in the past, the younger officials like us felt the ITTF was perhaps too political
Many political stuff
and many...say...
equipment, techniques, the minor stuff
But once I took helm, I felt we had to work on marketization
And so we did
perhaps the 1st time the ITTF did the first strategic plan

@3:46
- More focus on marketization?
You said it's a pleasure to work with the CTTA
From what we gather, the ITTF and the CTTA will have more in-depth collaborations
Could you share with us some of the plans that are in the talks?
Relatively simple
LGL has become the president
not even 1 year
His age is closer to mine
His thought is closer to ours
He has to make the sport of table tennis
its future
much better
including competitions, the world, and many others
Because the thoughts are close
we have a great discussion every time we meet
And there's no politics
He doesn't talk about how the ITTF used to do this
We don't talk about how the CTTA used to do this
We talk about the future
That's a big change
and we have a good time
The Tokyo Olympics is fast approaching
He wants good results for sure
But he also thinks...about table tennis
the future of the table tennis market
That's in line with how we think
Then we thought if we work together
the future of table tennis will be bright
International and China, China is the strongest market
The majority of market comes from China
China, Asia
And the ITTF also has the international market

So if these 2 work together
this will definitely be good for the future of table tennis

@7:23
Grand slam level
You want to build a new, higher, and more professional tournament with the CTTA
We're talking right now...many details to work out
but the main thing is how we will work together for the future of the table tennis market
We're having a great discussion
The executive committee had a meeting today
We talked about how to work with the CTTA
Discussion went very well. The executive committee knows we have to work with China
Unlike before, we're here, and CTTA is here
If we can work together
from playing in competitions to vitalizing the market
That'd definitely be a good thing
As you mentioned, our thoughts are in line

Well, but it is not only betting. ARENA is the betting branch. It will also include "1000" other things, like sponsors, streaming, different digital stuff and event development and management it seems . Did they have a role in the Indian league?? They own UFC (martial arts), and are involved in tennis, golf, football, badminton. American/Chinese. The IMG office is just up the road from ITTF in Singapore, so it seems conveniant?

https://www.insidethegames.biz/articles/1103576/report-finds-wtt-has-good-governance
An independent review by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) found World Table Tennis (WTT) was set up with good governance and financial compliance after concerns about the implementation of the commercial vehicle were raised by the German Table Tennis Federation (DTTB).
...
In its letter, the DTTB, which called for an independent investigation into the situation, claimed national governing bodies were "never informed" about the "degree of influence and power and freedom of decision transferred to WTT".

This was disputed by the PwC report, which claimed the ITTF had held a number of meetings, information sessions, webinars and video conferences about WTT from November 2017 to March 2020.
...
The DTTB also alleged in its letter that WTT now has "full control" over the international table tennis tournament system and is able to sell the rights for events without the involvement of ITTF Continental Federations or the Board of Directors.

As a consequence, the DTTB claimed, those within WTT can now conduct business independently for their own commercial interests.

The PwC report countered that ITTF rights had not been sold to WTT but licenced, and that national governing bodies are still able to organise events as long as they are sanctioned by the ITTF.
...
Geiger claimed the DTTB still had concerns regarding WTT events, however, having previously claimed these contests could be given more value than the Olympic Games or World Championships.

"As far as we currently know further aspects which are of vital importance for national associations were not addressed in the report, e.g. calendar of events, world ranking system, the importance of the Olympic Games, World Championships and continental championships as well as the conditions for national associations to be organisers of WTT tournaments," Geiger said.

What's interesting though, is that Weikert was wary of the relationships b/w ITTF and WTT. He made sure the "ITTF has control on the whole structure." Still, there will be some major restructuring within the ITTF, namely the AGM, BoD and EC will be streamlined to just General Assembly and a Governing Board. Certain existing committees may be removed down the line.

Le Floc’h, the former chief commercial officer at Fifa and marketing director at Uefa continued: “We don’t have all the baggage of the old-style packages so we can start fresh and be agile, addressing the requests of the potential partners. The drawback is that this is a new product and people like to see it. We’ll try to have a test event in Macau in October/November to be able to show the world what it looks like.”

...

Offering up his first impressions of the ITTF project when he held initial talks with Pound and Steve Dainton (the ITTF chief executive and WTT director), the Malaysia-based Le Floc’h said: “I thought – if I had a blank sheet of paper for any federation, then you’re doing exactly the right thing – creating a bespoke entity which is fully autonomous from the governing body and housing all the commercial rights in it. And you’re opening the shareholding up to some equity [investment] which allows you not to have to request mothership money and you can finance your needs.”

“Credit to the ITTF to allow this to happen because there are not many sports governing bodies who would have the courage to let it happen.”

I don't think that the ITTF has been a particularly admirable organization. I think the CNT especially under LGL has been even more successful than their usual historical standard.

So I think this is not a bad thing at all. I bet it will work out pretty well.

It's clear there are 2 camps within the ITTF. Given Dainton's guts to get rid of the WTTC and his having good times with LGL without the politics, I won't be surprised if WTT will break off at some point in the future, which is already a private limited company itself.

https://www.straitstimes.com/sport/doubts-over-wtt-off-the-table
Welcoming the PwC report, ITTF vice-president Nestor Tenca said: "Our sport has always prided itself on an open, friendly and constructive dialogue between ITTF members, but unfounded claims have no place in our sport. We are therefore pleased to be able to clarify the true position.

"Table tennis is entering an exciting new era, one in which we hope our sport gets the level of global recognition it truly deserves."

Under WTT, a new event structure will see a total prize purse of US$13 million (S$17.3 million) a year, more than double the previous amount.
...
ITTF chief executive Steve Dainton remained excited about WTT's future despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

He said: "WTT is an innovative, dynamic and modern events platform in the table tennis family created to focus on turbo charging the commercial value of our sport.

"WTT is creating new events, increasing the total prize money, putting athletes first and at the same time working with new investors and strategic partners to enhance the overall fan experience via a dedicated, fully digitalised production team."

Is it confirmed that WTTC are gone? The insidethegames article seemed to suggest it would just have its level of importance downplayed.

Lets hope the money and sponsors gained gets pushed back in TT. The sport needs big training centers and academies to survive.

Training centers and academies do not need their money to survive, the LMC shows it well. Clubs needs money for sure, and nowadays it IS actually and mostly clubs that grow and train pro players.

Training Centers and Academies get all the money and the facilities they need from sponsors, as shown by the Calderano case. More big events = more prize money = more oppportunities for players to get private team of coach, physios, sparring partners and so on + more attractivity to bring sponsors = more money for training centers and academies.

But... where are the clubs in that equation ? nowhere.
