Regardless of all that's happening still seems that the games are going ahead. What's the opinions of people living in Japan? Happening or not?

Less than 50 days now

The naysayers take it out on their own medal-contending athletes on social media. How does that sound?

That's what I feared when I wrote that reply. In case people didn't know, Rikako IKEE and Miu Hirano are close friends.

When Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga responded to a question in the Diet, he avoided talking about the judgment criteria for holding the Olympic Games under the pandemic, but emphasized that protecting the lives and health of the people is his job and a prerequisite for the event. If it cannot be protected, it will not be held. Opposition MPs asked Yoshihide Suga whether the Olympics could be cancelled when the prerequisite is not met, Yoshihide Suga responded that he was not the organizer.

WTF?

Election coming soon. Suga approval all time low with handling of pandemic and holding games with high disapproval. Big pressure coming for Suga to make big calls.

Judging by Facebook and Twitter, most of the Japanese are against the Olympics.

I'm pretty confident Olympics will now go ahead. Both Boris Johnson & now President Biden have given support to Suga, think that's the green light needed to proceed. Was listening for the potential for plenty of disruptions to matches, games, events if cases within the village circulate but that data might be manipulated too.

Think teams now really up the tempo as most uncertainty has been cleared.

7.7 infections per day
11.7 persons to be hospitalized
154 persons to be infected in total

Honestly appears Suga is trying to salvage costs. Think way he views it not good if Japan loses say 200 billion with cancelling of event, payout to IOC, sponsors and other costs associated to cancellation with nothing to show for it rather than lose say 50 billion which might include lost revenue from ticket sales and merchandise that won't be sold but might be able to get some returns back in TV rights etc

Anyways my opinion is just prepare for the event as it's happening. Who might it favour? Maybe CNT have been able to have more solid preparations back home with the use of the entire squad to help prepare with multiple trials etc so maybe could go in with an edge compared to say Indian team, South American teams, European teams who have had their countries impacted badly by covid which would effect their training etc. Japanese team might have had heavy distractions with state of emergency and no crowds might negate any home advantage, hard to say.

Big concern is we get to the event & matches get cancelled, teams pull out due to infections or disruptions occur. Imagine if Ma Long, Chen Meng, Harimoto test positive or say Korean team tests positive and need go into quarantine for 2 weeks, bad look. Imagine if say Spain Basketball team win Gold Medal because USA Dream Team pulls out due to covid infections, these are real possibilities.

Jörgen Persson just announced that Mattias Falck and Anton Källberg will play singles for Sweden and Kristian Karlsson teams while Jon Persson is a subsitute.

Also related to zeio's post #53

Möregårdh decided he would prove Jörgen Persson wrong about not picking him for the Olympic squad by winning this year's Swedish national championship. He was very upset he didn't get to come as a substitute. Mattias Falck did not participate and Kristian Karlsson had to leave WO because of a fever after his second vaccine dose.

Semi:
Anton Källberg - Jens Lundquist (11-3, 11-3, 11-5, 11-6)
Truls Möregårdh - Jon Persson (9-11, 3-11, 11-8, 6-11, 14-12, 11-7, 11-8)

Final
Truls Möregårdh - Anton Källberg (7-11, 7-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-3, 11-7)

Källberg who had demolished all opposition looked to continue that, but Möregårdh found his form and started playing very well and turned the final around.

How does the general public feel about Persson's selection?

How does the general public feel about Persson's selection?

From what I've heard or seen people are content with singles and teams. It has mostly been Karlsson and Möregårdh voicing opinions right around the selection about not being selected for singles/reserve spots. Möregårdh wanting experience and Karlsson (in an emotional state) that he was in no way a clear cut level below Källberg as Persson might have clumsily formulated it. From commentators, during events and league matches, they seem very high on Källberg and talks about his Bundesliga season all the time and I suppose most people (like me) are fine with the selection.

When speaking of the stronger opponents in his mind, Captain Long said: "I think Harimoto and Lin Yun-Ju, including Pitchford, and actually many others. I think there are many young ones, such as Darko and Pucar. I think these athletes have a very strong impact, and they may be different from the age-old players in the past. In the past few years, and coupled with the pandemic situation last year, I have not (played) these players very much and played very little, and given the limited understanding, anything could happen, so there is always such an element of uncertainty."

Appears Tokyo 2021 will definitely go ahead. Can't see it being cancelled now.

10,000 local spectators will be allowed at venues, but no hugging, alcohol or cheering will be allowed so wonder if this gives the home teams an advantage at all?
