We all know how Harimoto handled an easy draw at WTTC 2019. A difficult draw is actually better for him. No easy way out. No relying on flute. If he could get past Pitchford, LYJ(Harimoto never lost except in the T.League, but H2H is useless for Olympics/WTTC) and FZD, then all the pressure will be on ML.

Let's not forget FZD has a difficult time handling JYS. FZD will want Boll to get past JYS, but if Boll does, then that will make Boll vs China in Olympic singles a first, which has never happened before. Hard to tell what will happen.

yes very good point about boll, as timo must be so so keen to finally perform in an Olympics, so he has a chance perhaps, will be an interesting match!

Rising cases at the Olympic Village, US athletes complaing rather stay in hotels rather than at Village accommodation. Any changes of cancellation or is this going to continue?

It continues, even if the athletes have to climb over mountains of dead bodies to do so.

No medal for team sg it seems... :(
Only a sliver of hope from Yu Mengyu. She's drawn into the same bracket and Cheng and Ishikawa so there's a remote chance that she could be a surprise semifinalist. But then again she'll have to get past one of the 3 top seeds for a medal which is pretty much mission impossible.

One last time hoping Boll gets past (if FZD has a bad day, which is unlikey) and takes a singles medal in his career.
But probably won't happen :( Guess a team medal it is again, where he always seemed to be better in the past olympics - remembering 2012 China vs Germany where he beat ZJK.

Enough has been written on Boll. Even he was "secretly happy" the Tokyo Olympics were postponed. At this point, all I want to see is for the 8-time European Champion to meet China for once. The fans, not Boll, deserve better than this. After all these years, China still puts him in Group 1. So many fans in China give their blessings to him after learning the draw and his previous Olympic journeys. It is fair to say he has gotten more than his own worth from the fans. Timo Boll ALC Special - 70th anniversary edition, released exclusively in China. Let that sink in for a minute.

Team doctor Kass: "Timo Boll is in top shape"

07/22/2021 - Good news from the medical department of the German Olympic team: Team doctor Dr. Antonius "Toni" Kass gives the all-clear regarding Timo Boll's hip problem and sees the matter as ticked off. As for the mounting corona cases in the Olympic Village, there is certainly more cause for concern. In an interview with myTischtennis.de, Kass tells how Germans deal with the risk of infection and where the greatest risks lie.

Germany complains about the arena size as well. ITTF has decided to intervene but don't expect much, given they can only move the umpire chairs out of the way, increasing the width by 50cm. (height of table tennis table 76cm 😅)

GC Foerster: "The greatest opportunity you have ever had"

...

myTischtennis.de : Actually, you should have played an important role in this edition of the Olympic Games. As Jun Mizutani's private coach, you would have been there directly at the pits if he had been given the single starting slot. How did you and Mizutani cope with the fact that it didn't work out?

GC Foerster : We were both very disappointed because the individual was our clear goal. In retrospect, you can say that everything went incredibly stupid against Jun, without this being an excuse. The second individual starting place should either go to Jun or Koki Niwa - depending on who was higher in the world rankings. Now Jun had been invited to two T2 tournaments for which Koki was actually not qualified. In the end, one was canceled and Koki moved up with the other, so that Jun couldn't make up 600 points on him as planned. Or take the German Open game against Timo Boll, where Jun was already 3-1 behind, fought his way back, got a match point and still lost. Anything that could go wrong also went wrong.

...

myTischtennis.de : How do you think Japan's chances are? In which competition is it most likely to beat China?

GC Foerster: In mixed doubles - and after that I put a big exclamation mark! Here you have the greatest chance you have ever had. Jun has already jokingly said that he is now a mixed player. It will be difficult in a team competition because the Jun / Koki doubles have no chance. And when you're already 1-0 down, it becomes very difficult. This can also benefit Germany in a possible semi-final if everyone plays in normal form. In the women's team competition it will also be difficult, the chances are maybe 10 percent. But this little hope is justified. Mima Ito is strong, so is the doubles - something is going on. Unfortunately, there is no viewer bonus, which I think is a real shame. Because in the end the favorites will probably win again. With an entire hall against them, the players also have to come to terms with. Unfortunately that is missing here.

myTischtennis.de : If, in your opinion, the mixed is the hottest Japanese iron in the fire, did you put special emphasis on it in preparation?

GC Foerster : Not particularly when I was there. Mixed is not practiced as intensively in Japan as it is in China, for example. But I very much hope that you have worked harder on it. Because with such a great opportunity, it would be stupid not to focus on it. But of course I can also understand Mima if she doesn't want to put everything on mixed. She has a huge chance in all competitions. I like Mima a lot as a player, she is super dangerous. I trained with her once and it was very ugly. Sometimes she does really weird things with her bat.

myTischtennis.de : And why do you think we can't expect much from the double Mizutani / Niwa? You don't see a left-left combination that often, maybe they are good for a surprise.

GC Foerster : You have already played a World Tour tournament together and lost without a hitch. There have been some good left-left combinations, but then the game systems also have to harmonize. The two play pretty similar, neither of them is a 'killer', they rather want to 'play around' a bit. In addition, Koki is not the fastest - and so the two often get in each other's way. The two just don't go well together.

I hope this is a successful Olympics.... Deeply moved and in tears seeing such grace amongst the athletes.... Maybe this is what the globe needs during this troublesome time. Only time will tell the outcome, hope not at expense of any lives or health issues.

Also,
Jan Ove Waldner has led national Team of Swerige on two Olympic occasions
Jan Michel Saive was a flag bearer for Belgium once
Ding Ning for China once
Timo Boll for Germany once
??? for Singapure 2021
Good to know, Table Tennis players would make credit a lot for their own nation.

Watching it live now... Kumar vs Enkhbat.... Very dead atmosphere obviously no surprise being no spectators allowed.... My opinion honestly don't know who it favours but gives Japanese no advantage for home court..... I think SF, Medal matches might be different, might allow some athletes in to spectate but again don't think much cheering will be allowed so just the feel of preliminary round where barely any spectators are in attendance, kind of atmosphere we can expect for 2 weeks....
