The odds for the WS, though still low, were better had Tokyo 2020 been held last year. OTOH, the odds are better for the MS now, judging from Men's World Cup 2020 and the WTT Contender Doha 2021. All-Japan 2021 was a joke when seeded players were forced to play 3 singles matches on the opening day.

The WT has no chance without Hayata(still low with her). Ishikawa/Hirano just doesn't work. Having Ito play 2 singles in every match is just insane when she has to compete in all 3 events. The MT has no chance no matter how. Mizutani and Niwa playing doubles is comical. Imagine Harimoto playing doubles? Cruelty of competitive sport and fairness in the selection system don't *bleep* mix.
A few points to add now that both the Contender and Star Contender have come to an end.

The best-of-5 format for the singles(excluding the semi and final) and mixed doubles, coupled with the light schedule(1 match only per event on a given day) make it hard to draw concrete clues from those matches for the Tokyo 2020, but the women's team is in even greater danger now than it was back at TWC 2019. One can't expect Hirano to play Goku time after time if Ishikawa refuses to pull her weight.

Harimoto cut the Korean charade from last week, which was honestly a sign of doubt in your own strength. As Waldner advised in their exclusive interview, "don't be afraid to play your game." He did just that the second time, returning to his origin, going toe to toe with Ovtcharov in BH rallies and beating him at his own game. No flashy tricks. No gotcha tactics. Just raw strength.

Niwa and Mizutani. Can't blame Mizutani for treating his singles matches as busywork since he won't play singles. But for Niwa, he may be playing Waldner before the Olympics to drop off everyone's radar, but that score is just unacceptable.

Ito didn't play all that well here in Doha. I honestly expected shutout after shutout. Playing in WS only in Contender and WS/XD in Star Contender, her singles draw was relatively obstacle-free in both tournaments, yet she was pushed to the 5th and final game by Eerland in her very first match. Remember your sempai Ishikawa at Rio 2016? Things will be much harder at the Tokyo 2020, given your heavy-duty mission of playing WS, XD and 2 singles in WT under the limited home crowd support. The lack of spirit displayed after blowing the lead in G3 in the semi against LSS/JJH is also underwhelming.

Just how divided is Japan over Tokyo 2020?

Yomiuri, 1 of 5 Japanese national newspapers, claims that no overseas spectators will be accepted, yet the IOC statement says otherwise. Roughly 900,000 overseas tickets have been sold, which would translate to roughly 90 billion yen of loss if they have to be refunded, on top of the costs involved in the refund process.

    https://www.yomiuri.co.jp/national/20210310-OYT1T50001/

The Japanese government has decided to exclude overseas spectators from attending this summer's Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, as part of efforts to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, officials with knowledge of the matter said Tuesday.

The government and the Japanese organizing committee of the Summer Games are expected to hold a remote meeting with the International Olympic Committee and two other bodies possibly next week to make a formal decision on the issue of overseas visitors.
    https://www.olympic.org/news/-safety...pire-the-world
The Session also heard about two important, upcoming decisions that will impact fans. CEO Muto explained that a decision on whether overseas spectators will be allowed to attend the Games will be made prior to the start of the Olympic Torch Relay later this month. Thereafter, a decision on venue capacity is also expected in April.
    https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news...imoto-14385474
TOKYO: A decision has not been reached on whether to allow foreign spectators to watch the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee President Seiko Hashimoto said on Thursday, denying media reports that a decision had been reached.

The decision would be made before the start of the Olympic Torch relay, she added.

Sources told Reuters on Wednesday that Japan has decided to stage the Games without spectators from abroad due to concerns over the spread of COVID-19.

Whole thing is a mess. Looks like qualifying, logistics, volunteers, medical staff etc appears to be all over the place, four months left alot is still unclear and the dark.

Just make a final decision. If decide to proceed let all the countries involved know plans, expectations, measures for safety etc so can proceed. If things not in place then cancel and no one would think any less of IOC or Japan.

    No overseas spectators, after all.

    https://www.olympic.org/news/ioc-and...eas-spectators
During the meeting, the IOC and the IPC were informed that, as outlined in the full statement by Tokyo 2020, the conclusion of the Japanese parties is not to allow entry into Japan for overseas spectators for the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 due to the prevailing worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. Olympic and Paralympic Games tickets purchased by overseas residents from the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee will be refunded.

Chinese Taipei and Singapore have yet to announce their lineups as they are experiencing a surge of cases right now.

Meanwhile, after the Japan Doctors Union, the Tokyo Medical Practitioners Association also calls for the cancellation of the Tokyo Olympics.

    https://www.thestandard.com.hk/break...Games-scrapped
"We strongly request that the authorities convince the IOC (International Olympic Committee) that holding the Olympics is difficult and obtain its decision to cancel the Games," the association said in a May 14 open letter to Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga which was posted to its website on Monday.

    ...

"The medical institutions dealing with coronavirus disease have their hands full and have almost no spare capacity," the medical association said in its letter.

Doctors would soon face the added difficulty of dealing with heat exhaustion patients during the summer months and if the Olympics contributed to a rise in deaths "Japan will bear the maximum responsibility,'' it added.
The open letter on the official website of Tokyo Medical Practitioners Association:
    https://www.hokeni.org/docs/2021051700013/

    https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/20...ring-pandemic/
Holding the Tokyo Olympics safely as the coronavirus pandemic continues to rage would be "impossible", a union of Japanese hospital doctors warned Wednesday.

"We strongly oppose holding the Tokyo Olympics at a time when people around the world are fighting the new coronavirus," the union said in a statement submitted to the government.

"It is impossible to hold a safe and secure Olympics during the pandemic."

The union, which represents staff doctors at hospitals, is one of a number covering medical professionals in Japan. It does not list the size of its membership.

"We can't deny the danger that many kinds of new virus variants will bring to Tokyo from around the world," the union statement added.
The press conference on the official website of Japan Doctors Union:

Chinese Taipei my dark horse to collect few medals if games to proceed team & really no surprises here....
    Ladies - Cheng I-Ching, Chen Szu-Yu, Cheng Hsien-Tzu
    Men - Lin Yun-Ju, Chuang Chih-Yuan, Chen Chien-An

    Prediction

Ladies singles, honestly cannot see any medals here. CSY I think top16, CIC I think gets knocked out in Qrt finals by one of the Chinese or Japanese ladies

Men's singles, I can definitely see a medal here for LJY, I think maybe a bronze medal. CCY maybe Top16, will be interesting if faces off with Harimoto.

Mixed Doubles - being inaugurable event anything can happen. I think can win a medal. CIC/LYJ combination looks pretty solid, can win Gold Silver or Bronze, I think Silver or Bronze

Men's team - interesting team, what is funny is i can see them winning 3 games against most teams if play cards right, winning crucial doubles matches and LYJ winning both singles games. I feel their 2/3 singles options are weaker compared to most higher ranked teams and feel Qrt final knockout if likely outcome

Ladies team - Bronze medal is possible with good fortune and favourable draw. If can avoid China or Japan in qrt finals and get say Germany or HGK then they have good shot at picking up a medal. Like Men's team lot will need to fall right, CIC will need be dominant in singles, CZY might need pick up few singles wins against good opposition and doubles pairing CZY/CHT will need win every doubles game, I think very possible as a pair they are ranked #3 so good experience and chemistry playing together

I think Chinese Taipei will pick up 3 medals, old saying good day at the office.
