it will be the worst Olympics ever

they are even making a lottery where the "winners" will have their tickets cancelled (and refunded) because of that 10,000 limit

I'm seeing events such as Euro, Copa America, Champions League Final, NBA play-offs being played so maybe it can work, again maybe.

This will no doubt be most expensive games ever to date. Hopefully safe one for the athletes and locals plus good two weeks of table tennis, time will tell.

Japanese media: Operation ScrewTokyoOlympics, sutaato.

https://www.straitstimes.com/sport/...as-involved-in-interview-with-singapore-table
Japanese cameraman tests positive for Covid-19, was involved in interview with Singapore table tennis player

...

Mr Tay added: "During the interviews, we kept a physical distance of at least 3m from the media and wore masks during the entire time. The rest of the team had no interaction with the media and were situated 10m away." It is understood that the Singapore nine-member contingent in Shizuoka has moved to reject all media requests for the remainder of its stay in Shizuoka.

...

Kyodo News Agency reported that the cameraman who tested positive was in his 30s, and had interviewed the Singaporean athletes and filmed their training practice.

He took a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test after his colleague - who was not involved in the interview with the Singapore team - reported symptoms of Covid-19, and was confirmed to be positive on Friday (July 2).

The cameraman reportedly had his mask on throughout and as he had maintained social distancing, was not considered to be in close contact with the athletes.

The incident is understood to be the first involving a member of the media in Japan who has tested positive.

Two weeks ago, a Ugandan athlete tested positive upon arrival in Japan in what was the first time an infection was confirmed from an inbound international team.

I know public and media in Japan opposed to the games but that won't stop it being held. It's past the point of no return now.

I think Suga and his associates are ready to now live with whatever consequences happen. Think as table tennis forum we need move past whether will it happen or not because answer is yes, to what we think the outcome will be of the 5 table tennis events at the Olympics. NBA, UEFA CL, Copa America, Euros all happening so guess Tokyo 2021 will be a green light.

Two more staff members in the Tokyo Olympics Village have been infected with the COVID-19. According to reports, the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics will proceed without spectators, and some events will also be held behind closed doors.

With less than three weeks left before the opening of the Tokyo Olympics, this sporting event continues to be affected by the haze of the pandemic. The Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee confirmed that two more Olympic athlete village staff have been infected with COVID-19, and the cumulative number of confirmed staff has increased to 12.

Affected by the pandemic, the Olympic COVID-19 countermeasures may also be further tightened. "The Asahi Shimbun" quoted government sources as saying that the authorities intend to allow only a small number of Olympic-related people, including sponsors and diplomats from various countries, to watch the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics.

In addition, competitions that start after 9 pm or are held in large venues with a capacity of more than 10,000 will be held behind closed doors. Smaller venues can accommodate half of the maximum number of spectators. However, the Olympic Minister Marukawa Zhuyo said that no relevant arrangements have been discussed for the time being.

"Kyodo News" quoted Chinese news reports that China plans to send Vice Premier Sun Chunlan of the State Council to attend the opening ceremony of the East Olympics.

In addition, the primary and secondary schools in the cities where the Olympic venues are located last year applied for a total of about 1.3 million Olympic tickets through the "Joint Schools Watching Project" program for school children to watch the games. However, as the epidemic continues, many schools worry about possible risks and have cancelled their applications. Among them, 175,000, or nearly 60% of the tickets in the three counties around Tokyo, Saitama, Chiba and Kanagawa, have been cancelled.

We are still 'Past the Point of No Return'.... games will still go ahead.... Its really no ideal but just how it is....

Will be super interesting how teams stay isolated and what happens during dining times, how athletes interact with eachother, big outbreak will be headache for organisers possibly leading to delayed or cancelled events. It's a matter of watch and wait.

One thing is for sure. Less biding moving forward on games and specific clauses will want to included in every signed contract.

Not surprised. Absolutely disastrous handling by JOC and IOC. Kept dragging it out and waiting for a miracle to descend from heaven.

4th "declaration of state of emergency", which is not legally binding, so the Japanese public doesn't have to abide. Gotta be a joke.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8191912/
Unlike the lockdowns in China, the United States, and European countries such as Italy, restrictions during Japan’s state of emergency had no legal binding force. There were no penalties such as fines or arrests for leaving the house during the state of emergency. The police did not warn anyone who was out on the streets. The situation in Japan was one of a “voluntary lockdown.” Looking at the “Government Response Stringency Index”—a composite measure of nine response indicators published by the University of Oxford’s Blavatnik School of Government—shows that the value for Japan of 47.22 at the end of April during the state of emergency was considerably smaller than those for France (87.96), the United States (72.69), the United Kingdom (75.93), Germany (76.85), Italy (93.52), and Canada (72.69). Instead, the value for Japan was essentially on the same level as that for Sweden (46.30). Looking at individual indicators, the status for “Restrictions on public gatherings” was “No restrictions” and that for “Closures of public transport” was “No measures,” which is quite different from other countries. Similarly, with regard to “Stay-at-home requirements,” restrictions in Japan were weaker than in other countries: while in Japan people were “recommended” to stay at home, in the United States and various European countries they were “Required not to leave the house with exceptions.”

Looks like the start of all the fun to come, if measures not taken to lower the spread can just see all sorts of mishandling in the village. One concern is of it happens will information, data and stat's be falsified and will public be mislead? Most likely it will.

I will give them credit for least trying to have spectators avoid the venues to protect both players, officials and the public to some degree, most likely a stunt to cover themselves when situation worsens to say unrelated. Imagine all the revenue loss from tourism, ticket sales, merch sales, construction costs, marketing costs, etc etc etc....

Still just hoping safe event and that we all stay entertained. Some reason feel it will be from what I'm seeing in other sports, this one of course is different, alot more athletes and all in a confined space.

Earth Hell now came down to Japan.
Tokyo Olympic facilities seeming like a Plague reservation desolete.
The Enclosed Area void of any living creauture. Phantasmagorial awesome valley of Hell as depicted by Flamandian painter Boskhue from the year 1576.
Disaster sights to freeze your blood.

Drinkhall said: “Obviously, I’m very pleased and kind of surprised.

“It’s a shame for Vladi (Samsonov) that he’s had to withdraw – he was going for his seventh Olympics and is a table tennis legend, so it’s a shame that it’s come to me like that, but it’s good that I’m in a position where I’m next in line and I’m happy the BOA okayed me to take that spot.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge and aiming to do better than last time in Rio. I’m happy to be going to Tokyo to, hopefully, represent Britain well.”

Drinkhall has been in top-level action recently, having pushed eventual champion Timo Boll in the last 32 of the European Championships late last month.

He said: “I lost to the winner but gave him a very good game and came off disappointed because I felt I had a chance to win.

“I was happy with how I performed and it’s great going into the Olympics knowing that performance was just a couple of weeks ago and that if I perform like that, I will do well.”

Japanese citizens seeking injunction against the Tokyo Olympics. Filed with the District Court fearing safety concerns.

Might get interesting, might cause delays if has an impact. I'm no legal expert so don't have an opinion on what will happen.
