JJH set to play, but after having trouble procuring Viscaria Golden, she has trouble getting flight tickets to China.

Jeon Ji-hee (28, POSCO Energy), the signboard of the Korean women's table tennis team, is preparing to participate in the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Women's World Cup, which is approaching in November.

On the 16th, coach Kim Hyung-seok of his team, POSCO ENERGY, said, “Because of the problem of quarantine caused by Corona 19, Jeon Ji-hee must enter Shanghai, China within three days, including October 20, 21, and 22, but China Eastern Airlines departing from Korea. There are only 23 days of flight. If we do not enter within these three days, it is difficult to participate in the competition, so we are seeking cooperation with ITTF.”

The ITTF Women's World Cup will be held in Weihai, Shandong Province, China for three days from November 8 to 10, with the world's top 20 women's singles participating. Jeon Ji-hee, the only Korean player in the world rankings, got the right to participate. The ITTF and host China decided to hold the competition 12 days later after quarantining the athletes from each country for only three days before the competition and allowing them to practice at a designated training ground if there is no problem in order to enforce the competition even in the Corona 19 pandemic, Kim said.

Earlier this month, the ITTF announced that it will host four international competitions in China in November, including the Men's and Women's World Cup, postponed by Corona 19, under the name of “Restart” (new start). Starting with the Women's World Cup, the Men's World Cup will be held in Weihai from November 13th to 15th. Also, the ITTF Finals will be held in Weihai from November 19th to 22nd. The 1st WTT (World Table Tennis Federation) tournament will be held in Macau from November 25th to 29th. Because of Corona 19, all facilities, such as stadiums, accommodations, and restaurants, are prepared in specific places, and players compete in competitions in a completely isolated environment.

In Korea, in the case of men, Jung Young-sik (28, Armed Forces Sports Corps), the 14th place in the world, and Jang Woo-jin (25, Mirae Asset Daewoo), ranked 18 in the world will participate in the World Cup. Seo Hyo-won (33, Korea Horse Association), the 23rd place in the world, only participates in the Macau WTT. Chung Young-sik and Jang Woo-jin must enter Shanghai, China on October 27th and 28th to compete. The Korea Table Tennis Association is in a situation where Jeon Ji-hee asked for cooperation from the ITTF to allow him to join the male players at this time.

CTTA: How do we test out this new Olympic centre and show the world that we're the prime candidate to resume international events? Right, let's host the National Championships here!

CM: Will 2020 finally be my year?

WYD: No, it's mine.

CM: I'm still the leading lady in the poster.
ZYL: I'm back to take out my Olympics hopeful teammates.

OTOH, LSW has pulled out of the Grand Finals, although her replacement is neither DN (WR#6) or ZYL (WR#7) but WYD (WR#12). Considering ZYL is not playing too, then it seems fair to surmise that LSW and ZYL are both focusing on the Women's World Cup. DN... seems to be on the path of retirement?

Perhaps that's due to the ITTF Finals being considered as a separate event? The points from the 2019 WTGF won't expire until 2021.

I take it LSW and ZYL not playing in the ITTF Finals indirectly means that Thailand is still considered the host of the WWC?

In that case, DN will at best play in the team event in Tokyo. Honestly, the odds of SYS playing in Tokyo keep growing every day.

If LSW isn't playing in tournaments I think they should keep trying to get her back at full strength but at same time move past her. SYS for me going from strength to strength every year and just my opinion has overtaken majority of Chinese ladies.

Perfect replacement for LSW in XD and would go well with XX. Right now only 2 ladies I see beating Mima is SYS and CM. I actually think combination of CM SYS & WMY might work well.

The chinese team without DN and LSW suddenly appears a lot thinner. Although, that might mean space for WYD, who seems pretty unbeatable at the moment against Japan's main players. She also seems to have fixed her chopper weakness so it will be interesting to watch her play Sato again.

Hope your right about WYD. Been watching her grow and looking better more tournaments I watch her play.

Well, with LSW dropping out of the 2020 ITTF Finals, it appears that SYS is the only Chinese player with a legitimate shot at overtaking Ito's WR by the July 2021 Olympics, which may help her case for Tokyo 2021. The rest of the Chinese players (aside from CM who is pretty much guaranteed WR 1), are more than 2000 WR points behind Ito.

The post-COVID ranking guidelines have been released and state that "The events included in the ranking between May 2019 and April 2020 are valid for 24 months" instead of the regular 12 months. However, because the July 2021 WR list is the only relevant WR list to be used for Olympic seeding purposes, in calculating for Olympic seeding, one must remove events that transpired from May 2019 to June 2019 from the calculation. Notably, the 2019 China Open, HK Open, and Japan Open points will expire by July 2021 and will not be counted for Olympic seeding. Attached is a photo containing a calculation of ranking points for the July 2021 WR, so it excludes May 2019 and June 2019 tournaments. It also excludes the 2019 Women's World Cup points since these will expire when the 2020 World Cup is played and the 2018 WTTTC points, which will expire when the 2020 WTTTC is played early next year.

July 2021 Effective World Ranking Points (For Olympic Seeding)

In my opinion, this doesn't necessarily mean that LSW will not play singles in the Olympics next year because traditionally, CTTA doesn't use WR as the main criterion in selecting players to play in big events. In fact, it's possible that LSW's absence from the ITTF Finals, despite being initially invited, is a sign that CTTA doesn't really much care about WR or Olympic seeding. If CTTA's main criterion in selecting the Olympic singles players was WR rather than performance in Major events, then, wouldn't LSW do all in her power to raise her WR as much as possible by playing in more events? If LSW was informed by CTTA that her golden ticket to an Olympic Singles Spot is merely overtaking Ito in WR by July 2021, why would she allow herself to be replaced by Wang Yidi in the ITTF Finals if she needs all the tournaments and WR points that she can get? I can offer two possible scenarios to explain LSW's withdrawal from the 2020 ITTF Finals.
Either:
  1. CTTA informed LSW that WR will not be the main criteria for determining Olympic Singles spots, so LSW need not excessively join tournaments such as the ITTF Finals to raise her WR at the expense of her health and conditioning. She should instead focus on the World Cup, which is the most important event and only major this year. (Like what Janard said in post#47 of this thread, this may also explain why ZYL is not entered in the ITTF Finals either as CTTA may also want ZYL to focus only on the World Cup.)
  2. CTTA may have determined that LSW has a very slim chance to overtake Ito in WR by July 2021, (She's behind Ito by almost 5000 WR points), so it's best that she focus on getting herself healthy for the Olympics rather than playing multiple tournaments to try to catch Ito at the risk of injury. SYS's success or failure to overtake Ito in WR by July 2021 might play some factor in deciding if LSW plays singles.
One thing is for sure though. CTTA believes LSW will be a key member on the Olympic team (she's the only one whose spot is confirmed in the team and XD event) and CTTA is being extra cautious with their veteran by managing her health and tournament load even at the expense of WR and seeding. The same can be seen with JTTA and Mizutani. Japan could have easily overtaken Germany and secured the 2nd seed in the team event for the 2020 WTTTC and possibly the Olympics had Mizutani just showed up for the ITTF Finals. The German players were already bound to lose WR points by their boycott of the bubble events. However, Mizutani is a veteran, who like LSW, will be a key member for his country in the XD event and team event. JTTA has been excessively obsessed with world ranking, and for it to allow Mizutani to sit out the ITTF Finals at the expense of the 2nd seed in the team event shows that a veteran's health and conditioning appears to be more important than WR and seeding when it comes to Olympic performance.

In any case, I'll continue to provide updates with regard to the Olympic Seeding Race in case this plays a factor in determining China's Olympic lineup.

Would LSW need to play any tournaments leading upto Tokyo 2021 or does she slot straight in?

Seems bee absent for so long, even absent from warm up tournaments

Pecking order:
Pre-11/2018
DN≈ZYL, CM, LSW≈WMY, CXT, SYS
Pre-4/2019
DN, CM, WMY, SYS, LSW
Post-4/2019
LSW, CM, DN, SYS, WMY
Pre-4/2020
LSW, CM, DN≈SYS
2021
?, ?, ?, ?

ZYL's role at Rio 2016 will be the baseline for SYS. That's obvious by now, given all indications after WTTC 2019. If DN doesn't make the cut for the team event, chances are she won't be the reserve player. WMY will likely get that spot. From LGL's POV, the most ideal case would be for LSW to play in WT and XD only. In that case, CM and SYS for WS would be the most ideal and feasible candidates if they want to secure the top and bottom halves of the bracket. Yet, by tradition, and with rare exception, the reigning World Champion always played in the WS. However, COVID-19 entered the room 川建國-style and pulled off a pro gamer move that ruined everything.

As much as the coaches would want (?) to include DN, I feel that she should either play Singles (buffered by her playing style) or none at all (yes not even reserve as you have mentioned), although the former option is diminishing by the day. Her doubles skills are honestly nothing to boast about and her status as the only leftie among the core players hasn't proven to be as reliable as expected (Guo Yan even once called her a righty among the lefties 左手中的右手). She has been paired with almost everyone but WMY and the results haven't shown to be very stable IMO (including the two XD losses to An Ji Song/Kim Nam Hae and Harimoto/Hayata). The ideal doubles pairing is probably still up in the air. The two most winning pairs in the past year or so seem to be CM/WMY and LSW/CM from what I can recall, but excluding SYS is unrealistic.

One thing is certain. Whatever the doubles pair may be, it will be the weakest ever since the team event was inaugurated in 2008. Still, that doesn't mean other teams are necessarily stronger. As LGL put it, they could drop 1 or even 2 matches and still take gold, but they only have 1 shot in XD. That will set the tone for the rest.

Alot can happen in a span of 12 months

* Covid-19
* Injuries
* Players out of form
* Other players rise
* all of the above

I still say enough with who has most runs on the board til now from 12-24 months ago, just go with the moment and who is ready to go and most in form from recent tournaments, training etc.

Which pairing in XD right now is showing best promise rather than results 14 months ago, which three players showing best connection in both in singles and doubles to make successful team trip.

Goes for all teams.
Japan, should they stick with same 6 they selected or have Uda and Hayata/Nagasaki shown overtaken 1 or 2 players?

Japan's team selection is even more premature than the rubbish qualification process of the London 2012 Olympics lulll

Think Japanese team should re-evaluate, think big issue announcing too early it puts target on their backs for opposing teams. Teams know in advance who they have to prepare for and can do extra homework on certain players and pairs during that time during prolonged periods of time, this is mainly for teams like China, Korea, Japan who have bigger depth pool that other nations.

Like Brazil, you know Calderano will be part of it, Portuguese, Egyptian team all know main players who will be representing so no real element of surprise.

Being host country could give Japanese team an edge to win few Medals even few Gold at Tokyo 2021. Harimoto and Mima could be up for big matches deep in fixtures at Tokyo.
