This has been an unusual year, in the manner of a Buddhist riddle lots of stuff not happening has been even more eventful and noteworthy than if it had just happened as planned.
Still, we were lucky enough to watch and hopefully even play some decent table tennis and with this in mind I would like to give my nominations for the end of year awards (from a European perspective).
Player of the Year: On current form this has to be Anton Källberg. Surely his recent 3-0 over Gauzy ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhOIIOWwVhs ), following wins over Franziska and Shang Kun in the Champions League, make him the player to look out for in 2021. Hopefully we'll see him take on one of the big Chinese players soon to get a gauge of just how far he's come.
Surprise result of the Year: I am sure there are other matches that I'll have missed but what come to mind right now is Karakasevic's return to Europe's top league and marking it with a win over WR Nr27 Kanak Jah, in three straight sets no less: https://youtu.be/uZpo_adh7h4 Karaksevic (WR 113) is now 44 and unfortunately his results since the opening day have not been quite as impressive, making it quite likely that this will be his last season in the Bundesliga. However, he has definitely added value to proceedings and will be missed when he does eventually retire.
