There are basic ITTF specifications (see law 2.1) for tables. But any table is good for club/home play as long as it adheres to the 9x5feet regulation. Thickness and material is arbitrary.
The top rated tables in the old days were the Jaques of London versions. The best ones were around 30mm thick and were heavy and awkward to move around. There are still a few of these behemoths here in the UK. They are great to play on as they have an even bounce right to the edges.
However, for tournaments it is best to use ITTF approved tables. Some country's' TT association also approve tables that are not ITTF approved.
Look at tables in any TT catalog and the publishers will clearly show the ITTF stamp on approved tables.
2.1.3 The playing surface may be of any material and shall yield a uniform bounce
of about 23cm when a standard ball is dropped on to it from a height of 30cm.
