Ma Long have to serve with different spins ( one time backspin , one time side spin , ... ) in all the spots.

Ma Lin in my opinion is the best service man of all of them. That's why he's so eager there to flaunt.

Amazing picture, to answer the question he probably has to hit the white spots with certain serves. My guesses for the numbers are:
(labelled from the left to the right starting at net row)

[1] short BS
[2] short BS+SS
[3] short SS
[4] short SS pointing to the left
[5] half long BS+SS
[6] fast SS
[7] long TS / no spin
[8] fast SS
[9] fast SS or long TS / no spin

Guess if he fails this exercise the penalty is greater than leaving out a dessert

, one article once said a common penalty is running 10 km afterwards.

What worries me a bit in this picture is his starting position with the left leg pointing inwards that much. I checked with some of his ingame serves and after throwing the ball up he lifts the left leg and lands it parallel to the table end line like the usual starting position.

Can anybody see the advantage of this motion instead of directly starting with a parallel left foot?

My only guess would be that you get a bigger upper body backward swing range from the starting position and then negate the drawback of a possible reduced forward swing by lifting the feed during the motion and then profit from an usual wide forward motion at the end.

An interesting training methods for serve (placement)

9 service placement (9 pieces of paper ) on the table, Liu Guoliang randomly assigned the every serve placement, and all guys stood by said will make a lot of noise to interfere with the server.

Some CNT player's results:

Zhang Jik: 3/9 (3 balls served at the right place)

Xu Xin: 2/9

Ma Long: 3/9

Ma Lin: 3/9

Wang Hao: 4/9
