What's the average speed of a regular smash? It's hard to find this impressive when we don't really know how fast we usually hit the ball

122km/h is very fast. I don't know if there's a current record since I couldn't find it on the internet, but I think average players hit somewhere between 80 and 110.

I think Zhang Jike hit a ball against Joo Sehyuk in OG with 150 - 160 KPH speed. He smashed the ball out of the playing space and ball landed 20 meters away from the table! Still 122 KPH is pretty fast.

The official fastest smash was set by New Zealander Lark Brandt, see the article below, which contains a link to the original ITTF article from 2003 during the NZ Open/GJC.

This is the only smash competition I've known to be acknowledged by a national & international source. Make your own ideas about this, but if they were the same as Dimitrij Ovtcharov's set up, then Ovtcharov is smashing harder.

      Lark Brandt - 112.50km/ph
      Dimitrij Ovtcharov - 122.00km/ph

I can think of so many variables that make the comparison weak. But the best measurements usually come out at about 65-70mph as the very highest. So Dimitri's shot shot is about right for a pro.
Of course in a match players very rarely approach that speed as they are mostly driving and looping. The ball therefore curves through the air slowing the time between ball hitting racket then table. the straight smash will have a shorter time thus higher speed.

      Bump.

I just found this.. It appears that at every match of the Bundesliga, Borussia Düsseldorf lets one of the spectators measure the speed of his shots. There's also a list including top players:
