forehand topspin

Straight arm technique
Pros - more speed/spin/ deception in ball placement, ( looks cooler hahaha ).
Cons - Longer recovery time period, requires better footwork for consistent straight arm shots, poses greater shoulder injury chances.

Bent arm technique
Pros - Easier/ more consistent, Can be played to a degree even if the ball is in your crossover point pocket, faster recovery time.
Cons - less speed/spin hence easier to counter attack/ deal with for opponent.

The big straight arm FH can be a very poerful shot but at our level it is easy to give away points with this. That shot requires excellent position balance and getting low and roated. Not to mention good timing and even better recovery required.

A bent arm and more calm approach to the ball is less powerful much higher percentage and more dynamic.

We all must look at ourselves and decide what is best for us.

Since chicken-wing looping is easier to do it's very useful when you learn straight arm looping because then you can variate your game more and use it only when you need more power to finish the point. Even Ma Long sometimes uses bent arm looping if he's in a such a situation where he can't do straight arm. He usually opens up the bat angle when he swings back and then closes the bat angle at the contact with the ball. Also he stretches the arm once he swings back so that it creates the lag for the arm to catch up with the body thus not wasting the energy from your arm but rather using your body before the arm.
