More sponge = more speed/spin, but more difficult to control
So it is common for most beginners or children to start off with a thinner sponge rubber, so they can focus more on control and let the body generate the spin/speed. Than oppose to using a rubber that is too fast for they skill and generating tons of speed and spin, but with no control and consistency.

Control also refers to how easy you can feel the ball. But all this also ties with technique and skills

There is more spin and speed with Max, but as the above members have stated you lose control. However the difference in speed and spin is completely dependent on the level of player and how good their technique is. Without proper technique you will want to have more control so that you can feel the ball better. As your technique improves you could switch to the max sponge which will give you more speed and spin but the lack of control you should adjust to.

The biggest problem with many amateur players is that they choose rubbers that are too fast, too spinny, and have little control. These rubbers aren't meant to be used by players who lack control and technique. I've heard Jorg Rosskopf say that it amazes him that players who are below the U.S. 2500 level are using rubbers like Tenergy when they lack basic fundamentals that rubbers like Mambo and Sriver could have easily taught them. He mentioned how there are players from Europe using Mambo and/or Express and they will use sheets of rubber for years and still play at what we call the "pro" level (2500). It is unfortunate for us that we rely so heavily in equipment rather than foundation of technique.
