A Chinese TT fan raulsydney recently did some research on men's singles' players who have won at least one of the grand slam tournaments (Olympic Games, World Table Tennis Championships, World Cup) since 1980. He then calculated each champion's winning ratio, and created the following table. Note: Since Zhang Jike, Ma Long, Xu Xin, Wang Hao, Samsonov, Boll's careers are not over yet, so their records are subject to change in the future.

Looking closely, I found an interesting phenomenon, which is:

1. Since 1980, there are only three players (in green) who clinched WTTC and WC titles in the same year, i.e. Jörgen Persson(1991), Kong Linghui (1995), and Zhang Jike (2011)

2. All three players achieved the feat in the year before the Olympics Games

3. All three players took over both the world championship and the world cup title from one single player (in orange), i.e. Jorgen Persson from Jan-Ove Waldner who was the reigning WTTC champion (1989) and WC champion (1990), Kong Linghui from Jean-Philippe Gatien who was the reigning WTTC champion (1993) and WC champion (1994), and Zhang Jike from Wang Hao who was the reigning WTTC champion (2009) and WC champion (2010)

4. At the Olympic Games after one single player clinched both WTTC and WC titles in the previous year, two players had a chance to complete grand slam by winning that year's OG title, i.e. Jorgen Persson and Jan-Ove Waldner in 1992 OG, Kong Linghui and Jean-Philippe Gatien in 1996 OG, and Zhang Jike and Wang Hao in 2012 OG.

History seems to repeat itself, isn't it?

What's more intriguing is, next year will be the year before 2016 Olympic Games and one single player (Zhang Jike) once again is the reigning WTTC champion (2013) and WC champion (2014).

So, the questions are:

Will one single player once again clinch both WTTC and WC titles in 2015?

Are we going to have two players entering 2016 Olympic Games with a chance to complete the grand slam while
Zhang Jike for his second round and another player for his first round?

I think ZJK is going to win it all in the next year and the year after , unless he gets injured seriously. Till now, I haven't seen anything to suggest anybody other than Wang hao can give him serious trouble in the Grand Slams.

I'm afraid I have to disagree with you on this although I'm a ZJK fan. Of his five grand slam tournament wins, the one with Ma Long was the closest win. All his four previous wins against Wang Hao never had to go full distance into deuce in decider. So, I would say that Ma Long posed and would pose more threat to him than Wang Hao ever did.

In 2015 WTTC, the other top three players (ML, XX, FZD) will be hungrier than ZJK because the championship title is their only ticket to 2016 Rio OG single's event.

I agree with you on the last final but I am afraid nobody has shown the "balls of steel" till now other than him , ZJK is the only one where even the Chinese coaches have not been able to judge his mental strength and predict his performance. So , I firmly believe he will go out with fire in the next couple of years.

I have to agree with you. Ma long and fzd are the biggest threat to zjk

Ma long and fzd are both very powerful, with fzd eager to prove his capability.he has openly claimed his goal of winning in rio.

And ma long has finally got his mental strength perfect.it was just a bit of risk by zjk at wc that he lost.
