naturally the ball will lift like that.

I think it was on purpose. I've seen several older players attempting that stroke (or something similar) in knock-up practice or on a net serve. They would hold up their free hand then make the attempt. But this is the first time I've seen it in a match. So I guess they all got it from Waldner.

It's not the lifting of the serve that I found magical. It's how Waldner doesn't even let the ball bounce on the table and somehow glides it back towards himself.
