Later the day, Ma Long beat Qiu Dang by 4-0 (15:13, 11:8, 13:11, 11:7). He will face Xu Chenhao next round.
In the post-match interview, Ma Long said, "I didn't play well in the singles match. I was trailing in the first two games but managed to win. That's more important." "It's the first day. Get used to the tournament bit by bit." "My health condition is normal."
Jan 31:
Ma Long / Lin Gaoyuan beat Martin Allegro / Florent Lambiet by 3-0 (11:8, 11:6, 11:5) then Jakub Dyjas / Cedric Nuytinck by 3-2 (11:9, 12:10, 6:11, 6:11, 11:6) and proceeded to the final of men's doubles, in which they will face Cho Daeseong / Jang Woojin.
Later the day, Ma Long beat Xu Chenhao by 4-1 (7:11, 11:9, 11:9, 11:5, 11:5). He will meet Cho Seungmin in the quarterfinal.
In the post-match interview of men's singles, Ma Long said, "It is a very touch match. I played two doubles matches and one singles match. I find my form better than yesterday. I was challenged in the singles tonight while the victory will help me prepare the upcoming matches tomorrow." "Xu Chenhao has improved a lot in the past year. In the first three games, I fell behind in the beginning. But I kept on my planned tactics to catch up." "In the doubles match, it is easy to lose points quickly due to unforced errors from both players. In the third and fourth game (of the doubles semifinal), we made many unforced errors and lost those games."

Ma Long reposted the video of ITTF on Sina Weibo and said, "There is a training center for the national team in Huangshi, Hubei. Hubei people show great hospitality and impressive passion and support to table tennis. At this difficult moment, let's solidarize and fight, and we will pull through. Go! Solute to all who are fighting against the outbreak in the front line! Please be safe!"
<iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FITTFWorld%2Fvideos%2F261295304837942%2F&show_text=0&width=560" width="560" height="315" style="border:none;overflow:hidden" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" allowTransparency="true" allowFullScreen="true"></iframe>

Feb 1:
Ma Long beat Cho Seungmin by 4-0 (11:6, 11:7, 11:8, 11:4) and will face Dimitrij Ovtcharov in the semifinal.
In the post-match, Ma Long said, "My performance is normal today. This is the first time I played with Cho Seungmin. He beat Liang Jingkun and Simon Gauzy. He has his characteristics." "I feel his services and third ball attacks are aggressive, especially his services." "The doubles final tonight will not be easy. The opponents must be strong as they beat Jeoung Youngsik / Lee Sangsu. I will just fight."
Match point missed in the fourth game, Ma Long / Lin Gaoyuan lost to Cho Daeseong / Jang Woojin by 2-3 (12:10, 13:15, 14:12, 12:14, 6:11) in the men's doubles final at German Open.
Feb 2:
Ma Long beat Dimitrij Ovtcharov by 4-2 (11:3, 11:9, 11:13, 13:15, 11:3, 11:6) in the men's singles semifinal of 2020 German Open. This extends their head-to-head to 17 vs 0.
Ma Long answered the post-match interview in English. Hardest match in the tournament? "Yes, it's (I am) very nervous." What about home crowd cheering for your opponent? "First, I am very happy I can win the match. I still tell myself to focus on the court and trust myself. I like the atmosphere here. Thank you everybody!"
<iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FMaLongFamily%2Fvideos%2F207636260416359%2F&show_text=0&width=560" width="560" height="315" style="border:none;overflow:hidden" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" allowTransparency="true" allowFullScreen="true"></iframe>
Later the day, Ma Long lost to Xu Xin by 0-4 (13:15, 8:11, 7:11, 5:11) in the men's singles final of 2020 German Open.
This is Ma Long's 7th German Open and 7th final. He has won 5 times out of 7.

Although it is a pity that he ended up runner-up for both men's doubles and singles in this tournament, it is good to see that he has been fast recovering.
Ma Long was invited to 2020 Asian Cup (Feb 28 - Mar 1) in Hainan. Due to coronavirus outbreak, Asian Cup is now postponed. Ma Long is on the entries list of Qatar Open (Mar 3-8). Hopefully Team China will take measures to ensure safe travel and normal training.

According to CCTV Sports on Feb 13, last week Team China worked on physical training and doubles practice. From this week, they started preparations for the upcoming World Team Championships, with major rivals imitated.

“Masks keep virus off but tighten our hearts. Let's fight together", Ma Long reposted ITTF Weibo post on Feb 14. Since ITTF called for supports to China, medical equipment supply information was received and CTTA has purchased 600,000 surgical masks and donated to Wuhan.

It was reported on Feb 21 by Japanese media that JTTA will invite Team China to train in Japan after World Team Championships from Mar 30 to Jun 13. According to Table Tennis World Magazine, Team China has not decided the training camp location yet. Japan is one option but Team China is contacting and evaluating other locations as well based on how coronavirus is contained there. Team China will ensure the players to prepare for the Olympic Games in the safest environment.

Where is Team China's next stop?
2020 World Team Table Tennis Championships is provisionally postponed to Jun 21-28, which affects specific preparations for 2020 Olympic Games one month later. World Tour events in Asian cities may also be rescheduled and few tournaments are available for Team China to attend. Staff have been working on finding proper facilities to train after Mar but now they have to start over.

Team China will leave Qatar for Macau on Mar 13 for training.
Since Feb, CTTA had made many plans for the training facility after Qatar Open. They contacted several associations in Europe and Asia including Korea Republic, Japan, Thailand and Macau, and decided to go to Macau. By Mar 11, Macau has not reported a single COVID-19 case for 36 days and all 10 previous confirmed cases were cured and discharged. At the crucial moment, CTTA will focus on the safety and health of the athletes and coaches as well as the preparations and tournament attendance. If Hong Kong Open and China Open (Shenzhen) can be played, it is convenient for Team China to go there from Macau by bus. If these two events are postponed, Team China may attend other World Tour events and Macau is not on travel restriction list for most countries and regions. If all tournaments are canceled, they will go back to Beijing.
The Government of the Macau Special Administrative Region showed great support after receiving Team China's request, to arrange new training courts, facilitate the transportation of training equipment, and provide good food and lodging. Safety first.

Long time no see! Hope everyone staying safe during COVID-19 and having fun watching Tokyo Olympic Games!

We haven't updated this post in the forum since the pandemic while we do have regular updates on our Facebook page. Please check out if you are interested.

It has not been an easy year for all our beloved players due to the pandemic and delay of Tokyo Olympic Games. For Ma Long, recovering from his surgeries, coming back to the court and regaining his form are unprecedented challenges, more challenging than any rivals (a recent interview https://fb.watch/748HncMaXp/). It is the pure passion for the sport and the desire for victory that makes him stay in the game and break records again and again - the biggest one being successfully defending his Olympic singles champion on Jul 30, 2020 in Tokyo.

When he won 2020 ITTF Grand Finals last Nov, a year and half since his last title, Ma Long said he felt like in a dream. After the Olympic final, he was asked to describe the feeling and he said, "In a dream" again. After a narrow escape from the semifinal against Dimitrij Ovtcharov, he said he knew he will be in the lower hand in the final but want to enjoy the game. He did it and when the dream came true, he showed the world a heart, a bigger heart than he showed at Rio Olympic Games.

Congratulations, Ma Long! The champion is the goal, but not the destination. We are looking forward to more excitements you will bring to the sport.

On Aug 6, Team China beat Team Germany in the final of men's team event at Tokyo Olympic Games. Congratulations to Team China to defend the team champion! Ma Long becomes the first ever table tennis player to win 5 Olympic gold medals.

After beating Timo Boll in the 3rd set, Ma Long shouted, "Exciting! (ci-ji)"

Before Tokyo Olympic Games, when asked what he would say if he successfully defended his title, Ma Long said, "Ma Long, your beautiful life just starts." (*Beautiful in Chinese pinyin, mei-li, begins with ML.)

In the post-match interview, when asked about the feeling to win two gold medals at Tokyo Olympic Games, Ma Long said, "I didn't think much. I was happy at the moment of victory. But it is not a very big deal. It may be an important experience in my life, but not all of my life. I hope I am still down to earth." When asked about the next plan, Ma Long said, "My physical condition is very good now. My opponents like Dimitrij Ovtcharov and Jun Mizutani of my age, or Timo Boll at 40, all show great form and fighting spirits. I don't have any specific plan and will keep moving on." When asked the most enjoyable moments at Tokyo Olympic Games, Ma Long said, "I enjoyed doubles matches in the semifinal and final. Xu Xin and I executed what we prepared and made it. For singles match in singles event and team event, I lost games here and there and it was never easy to win points. I enjoyed national flag raising and anthem playing."

Ma Long updated his Sina Weibo after the team event, the first time time since he went to Tokyo, "5 years passed and I felt the excitements of Olympic Games again. Gratitude to my teammates Xu Xin and Fan Zhendong, for each match, we did our best and played at the highest level. Olympic gold medal is the honor to my teammates and me, coaches, practice partners, medical and supporting staff! We worked together and fought together. Gratitude to all the supporters, you can always believe in Team China! As to myself, whenever I have the passion, I am at my prime time! For the passion of table tennis, keep fighting and keep winning, Team China!"

On his 33rd birthday on Oct 20, 2021, Ma Long said,
"Year 2021 has been full of excitements and sentiments to me.
Through surgery, pandemics and comeback with poor form, I finally went to Tokyo Olympic Games and made achievements. I am very grateful for the trust and help from the team, the coaches and teammates as well as the support from my family, the company and encouragements from my fans. Every cheer from you, 'Go, Ma Long! We believe in you.', means a lot to me, which motivates me to overcome all the hardships.
I have claimed all the possible titles on this planet. However, that is not the end of my career. Olympic Games is not the only reason that I keep moving. At 33 years old, I am eager to win and I am capable to win. I love to fight and I dare to fight. I wish to stand in front of the table tennis table that I love so much, for a longer and longer time. And I am working hard to make it happen.
Keep on. I want to witness the possibilities that my passion and dream can bring."
As usual, Ma Long continued his birthday charity to pass the joy and courage he learnt from table tennis to more children. He called for information of more schools that are in need of sports equipment.

On Oct 25, Team China announced lineup for 2021 World Championships and Ma Long was not included.
Ma Long wrote a post explaining the situation. He said he enjoyed the crowds at China National Games and China Super League and wanted to keep playing. However, he needed a break and rehabilitation after so many tournaments. Therefore, he requested not to attend 2021 World Championships and the team agreed, which were also the cases of Xu Xin and Liu Shiwen.

Before knee and wrist surgeries in 2019, Ma Long said, "If I got cured this time, I may play till Paris Olympic Games." "Even as a coach or a training partner, I will go to Paris."
After winning double Grand Slam, Ma Long said his current form was better than previous two years, especially his leg. Indeed, within a month or so, Ma Long got men's doubles gold and men's team silver (losing one match) at 2021 China National Games and he got team runner-up of 2021 China Super League without losing a match.
Ma Long said in an interview in WSJ China Oct issue, he wanted to win no matter how many titles he has got and no matter what level the tournament he attended. "I want to win the champion, even a tournament in residential community."

With such fighting spirits, desire for victory and sharp form, can we see Ma Long play again?
