Recently played a long pips player....

Hideously outta shape, didn't move, no forehand, one backhand shot .... the most joyless futile experience of my year thus far....I happily lost 11-1 - 11-1 - 11-3 just to exit the anticipated joyless experience...if you cannot play the game - indeed any sport that was clear from his stature (being polite) please pop to butlins find the nearest dartboard and leave this beautiful game in peace...

Sorry but if you can't beat this description, you need more training including your mental attitude toward the game.

It sure is a joyless experience losing to pips guys like that, I've been there - the only bagel I ever had!
It was V a 74 yr old pips guy who I totally underestimated just from looking at him and I got exactly what I deserved. I was using a racket I hadn't used before so that didn't help me but no excuses, he dismantled me, moving me in and out, right and left and outright embarrassing me: 0-11, 1-11, 6-11.
I appreciate the control and thought in his game though and I didn't lose the lesson.
I had it figured out by the end but it was much too late for me although I was able to coach a highly frustrated teammate from 0-2 down to beat him 3-2 later in the evening! Small revenge 😂

Anyway, the aim is to put the ball on the table. He's clearly better at his way of doing it than you are at yours 😉

Long pips (and any other non standard rubber) can be a challenging experience for a double inverted player, but my view is that given what you have said about his physical condition, and his limitation in stroke making, the fact he beat you easily is a fairly damning indictment of your own TT skills.

Sorry if this sounds harsh, but TT is a game for all styles and equipment within the rules and the sooner you learn to deal with these and adjust your game, the happier you will be. He clearly can play the game and beat you at it - the fact he does this in a different style to you is his prerogative.

Pips are the best!

Good pips players (and even bad ones) do really well at the amateur level because their opponents often don't know how to deal with it.

BUT...... As soon as you can play comfortably against pips (especially long pips), there is just nothing they can do.....

Welcome to the forum @Tuscantornado - I'm not sure the response is one you expected! 😂

This discussion again. It is not about winning or losing, it is about the joy. Playing an opponent like the one described isn't particularly fun even if you win.
Perhaps a ban is too much, but it would be nice with non-pips-tournaments.

I have a monthly game with a guy that meets the description. Still haven't beat him. Not playing other games with him that would allow me to adapt to his style. But it's me and my lack of technique to blame. He gives some balls back that should be easily attacked and I don't yet have the skills to do it.

It is a learning experience. Fun, if you allow yourself to recognize that your level isn't up there and if you try to progress.

* thats true!
** Thanks to the material. 95% chance that if you give him a simple inverter the set positions could be just the opposite.

I call bullshit on this.
It's about the joy, are you Kamala Harris 😂

You say it's not about winning or losing but to some people it is.
And to some it's just about improving or social aspect or competing or whatever.
Perhaps the pips player experiences absolute joy in beating players this way?
Maybe you'll experience joy if you rise to the challenge and find a way to consistently win V pips.

damn,,,,, meanwhile, I recall playing against an illegal long pips, that was just so difficult to attack.
I really enjoyed the challenge on trying to consistently looping the incoming ball, as it comes back more heavier (under spin) every time.
I would fail maybe after the 3 or 4th attempt at first, and would continue until the opponent fails to return the ball.
Granted I still won, but I wish I can have just hours of top spin against that kind of chopping by an illegal pips.

The super illegal pip (very long) also causes inconsistency in where the ball will land (on my side of the table), causing my timing to be off or keep me thinking and moving all the time.

An easy way was to push the ball back, but I didn't want an easy way, keep on top spinning and when I failed, it was because of the ball/spin/placement beating me.

How I miss such action

Nothing to stop you from fighting fire with fire and joining the dark side even if temporarily to see what it's about and to see if you can compete on a "level playing field" againts your supposingly crappy pip wielding opponent. It would be an interesting experience for sure.

Personally I take pips players as a challenge. Sure they will kick my ass most of the time if they are good enough but I look at better players to see that it is indeed possible and just have to figure out how I should do it too,

I rather wish pips were more popular, like where 20-30% of people actually play them. This way people can get some regular experience on them and less of that crap they should be illegal. It's just a type of rubber, and playstyle most people aren't comfortable with, not some form of cheating.

The point of the post if I'm readying correctly is that someone who is out of shape has very little skills and uses weird equipment can easily beat an athletic, skilled player. That is a very negative view of the sport IMO.

How many other sports do you know that a player who is less skilled and worse physical shape can beat someone by simply using equipment? It completely changes the point of being a sport. Many sport sanctioning bodies purposely level the playing field by minimizing equipment impact. So that the most skilled and best trained player wins.

Hahaha-haha Hahaha-Haha....heheheheheheheheheheheheheh so sez Woddy Woodpecker.

If there were not Pips players, I would have lost in 1st round after advancing from group in my last comp.

Two consecutive pips players after advancing from group was real gift for me.

Play them moar, get used to them and later win !

@Tyce,

Go to Korea for a 6 month vacation and join a club... instantly, you will get useful reps. It is almost a national law that if yuo are O40 and wear lipstick, you must have OX LP on BH.

Take a vacation there... you will LUV it.
