hey everyone, one of my clubmates plays an untypical defensive game with two inverted rubbers and i wanna help her find the best solution. since here most people ask about offensive equipment made for pros i wanted to open a new thread for intermediate defensive players playing with grippy/tacky rubbers.

her game is based around backspin close to the table and wants the opponent player to either open up with a weak spinny loop (if the spinny loop is low she blocks with insane early timing to create a rather short ball on the other side or if the ball is high smash/kill) or push around till the other person mess up. so she need to create really heavy backspin on the one hand, but must also be able to play a good block and smash.
what would you suggest?

right now she plays with rather soft hybrid chinese rubbers in 2.1 and i think 37° hardness chinese scale. not really that sticky but more then typical esn hybrids.

I would recommend to switch to sticky chinese rubbers with 1.5-1.8 sponge, i used to prefer 61second Kangaroo but lately they're not coming sticky out out the package, i'm thinking to try LKT rubbers por this purpose

Victas VS 401 works remarkably well for this, I'd suggest in 1.5mm. It's great for pushing and produces very high spin, but also attacks really well. The sponge is hard, but the topsheet is quite soft, making it feel a lot less hard. It's more expensive then the options above though, it's also quite heavy, but a thinner sponge helps.

ttdd.eu has many chinese rubbers with thinner sponges. Namely 729 battle 2, which is very tacky and spinny, but a little bit livelier than other sticky chinese rubbers.
Yinhe mercury 2 could also be interesting, it's quite slow, but throw is higher than other sticky rubbers. But i found it easy to chop with, if thats interesting for her game. And it's dirt cheap at around 5$ a sheet

all solid advise

It is good to see inverted choppers :)

When I invited Shaanxi provincial team to Cape Town about 10 years ago, one of the coaches that came with was a 2 side inverted choppers.
and wow, this balls were spinny.

Saw him against a Jia A player going all out.
I really admire the chopping game!

i love this style too. i often get punished if i be a bit too lazy or a bit too rushed. best trainingspartner to get a solid looping game. you will not get free points

a lot of players underestimate her and then they loose big time and saying “i just lost because of this weird style” but no they lost because their looping and mental game is just weak :D

A club mate of mine uses Gewo flex control, he basically pushes and chops everything with it until he gets a good chance to finish the point.
Tackiness C comes to mind, too
729 Super FX in 1.5 would work
Spinlord Marder

... Basically anything you can get in 1.5, 1.3 would be great.

says 1-sided penhold is cool
Actually DHS Hurricane 3 39 commercial version is perfect and if one reads the manufacturers dribble it is made for that.
I use them unboosted on my BH.

Skyline 2 is better for chop-blocking, dropping the ball short, and taking the ball immediately off the bounce.

Hurricane 3 is better for pushing and chopping.

I say this as someone who uses both Hurricane 3 and Skyline 2

Virtually un -obtainable and too bouncy.
Defies the purpose.
Sure, if you boost the hell out of it. If you don’t, it’s just a slow somewhat soft and very sticky rubber which gets faster as it gets less sticky and softer overtime. I don’t remember ever having a too bouncy unboosted H3 even for defensive purposes. Also, SHE may not have enough power to actually attack with the regular version and smashing and blocking is way better with the softer version.
