Is it just me? I feel ML was a bit emotional in the interview. I feel he truly enjoy table tennis and tried to avoid the topic of retirement 😭 😭
i think the topic of retirement needs to be respected.
it is probably too commonly uses among chinese table tennis fans (like zeio here retiring the whole jnt womens team and he thinks it is so normal-which is, in China....) but in the western world, it is not as commonly talked about.
you don't see people asking timo boll every time he looses on how long he will stay on, or when he will retire

ML has already paved the way that, one can stay on and dominate.
He may not be champion, but he is still top in the world, without doubt.
if he is fit and has the energy, he can play for another year then see, then player for another year then see.

people needs to stop asking question about retirement.

I also feels Ma Long is at a stage that he is enjoying table tennis and doesn't carry that pressure from CNT like in his younger days.
CNT has changed a lot, and ML has helped paved the bridging of the traditions

LSD showing what many of the younger Chinese players are missing these days, a short game that troubles even ML. ML manages to change up his receives and claw back a set though, now it's a best of 5.
Indeed. Two major visible improvements for LSD is forehand loop and short game. It's so rare to see a young player with awesome power has such a good receive push.

What an incredible match between the goat and the best from the young generation.

The rare smile on Ma Long's face when he was shaking hands with LSD after the match seems to say, "I did my best and now the torch can be passed to this brilliant young man".

I am tempted to say, we are entering a new LSD era even though he is still so young. In a short month, LSD has captured 6 crowns and 1 second place in MD in three events, two of which were major WTT ones. What an achievement for a 19 year old!

In Chinese team, the top tier is usually constructed by 2 or 3 players. So, there were LGL/KLH era, WLQ/MLin/WH era, MLong/ZJK/XX era, MLong/FZD/XX era
MLong/FZD/WCQ era... Now, it seems we will be entering FZD/WCQ/LSD era. Logically, after lasted as long as 3 eras, MLong got finally pushed out of the top tier. As proud as he is, MLong probably won't stick too long before he announces retirement.

LSD entering the top tier at such a young is unheard of for CNT. But the young man has earned his spot by making such a big splash that no one can ignore.

The controversy is WCQ who was mocked by many due to his poor performance since Paris. However, I believe CNT coaches will give him the chance as WCQ typically going through months of hot followed by months of cold. Right now, he is clearly in a slump.

Maybe it's a cultural thing, but in the west unless you know someone personally, it's very rude to tell someone to retire which involves their livelihood.

I feel for the Chinese people that have had to deal with age discrimination as being part of the culture:

The ‘curse of 35’: In China, millennials are already too old for some employers

I think it is rude too

zeio is calling for people to retire, because he feels those players are horrible people.
Ma Long is a hero.... so that logic is out of the equation.
More respect needs to be given and I hope he does get it.
It should be, allow him to dictate his own terms, just like Timo Boll and Chuang Chih Yuan

Now this is getting personal.

For the record, the players that I've consistently urged to retire are: Ishikawa, Boll (much less frequently than turboblock and a few others who have been at it for far longer over at tt-news), Ito, and Hayata. I've made my case for each of them when members like you who simply argued otherwise for the sake of it with nothing of substance. So stop putting words in my mouth that they are horrible people. Those are your words.

If anything, you're the one who has been smearing the CNT and WTT. So stop using me as a scapegoat (I'm a fan of table tennis) to hide your intention and sneakily further your own agenda with your straw man argument. To me, you are also just another Chinese table tennis fan. I couldn't care less how you identify yourself. You look Chinese to my American eyes.

In the interview of Ma Long with Timo Boll, he said that he wants to continue to play in future like him. He also said he will try to stand 1-2 years more, but 4 years passed.

Personally, I want to continue to watch him, his games have the unique taste to see.
