From Table Tennis New Zealand:
Message from TTNZ CEO:
I am quite appalled to have learnt that there has been an incident of cyber bullying occur last night on the live feed of our teams world cup game on YouTube.
It turns out that this was an impersonation of at least one maybe a couple of our NZ players by cyber trolls.
Let’s remember that not everything seen online is real, trolls and fakes are unfortunately part of the online world. The good news is that it’s also relatively easy to track digital footprints unless they are highly skilled to cover their tracks.
This incident has been reported to the cybercrimes unit of NZ Police and they are investigating to find the original IP address of the perpetrators so they can be tracked down and held to account for their actions.
It has also been reported to ITTF for potential sanctions as/when the perpetrators are found, if they are in fact table tennis players.
I hope that this was an isolated incident and not traced back to anyone in the table tennis community in NZ.
Let me be clear that in addition to this being a criminal offence, TTNZ has a zero tolerance for bullying of any kind whether online or in person and that includes impersonating someone else to perpetrate bullying or unkind behaviour of any sort.
If anyone has information/evidence regarding this incident you are welcome to contact me on [email protected]
Let’s be kind to each other, enjoy tonight’s livestream and support our athletes who are giving their best on the world stage to represent NZ
