Regarding Boll, thank you, Rosskopf. But Qiu Dang and Ovtcharov over Franziska for MS? I expect their retirement if they don't reach at least the QF.

At last you have Timo. Timos world ranking dropped a lot, after his injury problems, but in the last months you see what he is capable of if his body is fit. He won against Lin, Harimoto, Jang, LSD, Lee Sang Su... Which other player other then F. Lebrun can say something like that? The olmpics were never his tournament, but with the form he is in it would be criminal to take him to paris.

What are your thoughts? I would like to see Qiu and Boll in singles and Franziska for the team, but i fear they will leave Boll out because of his world ranking and injuries.
Forget Boll. How many frigging times has it been? I'm tired of guessing right every time from an absurdly small sample size. Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020 and only for it to repeat one last time at Paris 2024? Give me a break.

He just missed out on WTTC 2024 due to iritis. Gosh! Yet again! No one cares about the WTT SCT Doha 2024 (Harimoto didn't want to play but still played for the WR points only) and the Singapore Smash 2024. What good does playing well there and here do?

Nothing in particular as Boll has always been eliminated before meeting any Chinese player.

2000 Lost to Schlager in the Rd of 16
2004 Lost to we-all-know-who in the QF
2008 Lost to Oh in the Rd of 16
2012 Lost to Crisan in the Rd of 16
2016 Gonna lose to a non-Chinese in the early round

Had Tokyo 2020 been held on time, Boll would've been pushed around in SINGLES, AGAIN, 99% certain. Just not the type of player who gets it done in SINGLES when it counts. He has the habit of getting injured/losing form before the majors even during his prime. WTTC 2007, WTTC 2008(didn't attend) and Beijing 2008, WTTC 2009(didn't attend, 1, 2, 3), London 2012... Yet, he is a different animal in TEAM event. Don't count him out. It took a once-in-a-lifetime-XX-beating Mizutani to take him out at Rio 2016, when Boll was yet again injured.

Always assume South Korea as the dark horse when it counts. JYS will carry the team.

Enough has been written on Boll. Even he was "secretly happy" the Tokyo Olympics were postponed. At this point, all I want to see is for the 8-time European Champion to meet China for once. The fans, not Boll, deserve better than this. After all these years, China still puts him in Group 1. So many fans in China give their blessings to him after learning the draw and his previous Olympic journeys. It is fair to say he has gotten more than his own worth from the fans. Timo Boll ALC Special - 70th anniversary edition, released exclusively in China. Let that sink in for a minute.

波尔:我只想奥运单打可以上一次领奖台………(Boll: I just want to be on the podium once...)

Boll: I never lost to China at the Olympics.
zeio: Just retire, 8-time European Champion.

Mr Zeio,
Boll is only playing in the team event this time. Essentially, he's been 'dropped' from a chance at getting that elusive singles medal at an Olympic Games.

In the team even, he has often done very well, helping Germany to medals over the years.

As someone who himself has retired prematurely, only to return after some time has passed, can't you not be happy for the old German man and wish him another good team event?

Actually yes, I didn't quite read your post properly. You agree with me that Boll is an OK choice for the team event and add that Franz should be playing team and singles.

A
part of me thinks that the DTTB gave Boll the nomination BUT have also already spoken to him and said that he will have an injury come the Games and Franz will actually play with a youngster (Stumper) at 4.

Boll should have been the P player, they're wasting Franziska's prime with this unnecessary appeal to age/seniority. Next chance for Franziska is in another four years. Who knows what condition he'll be in by then??
Dima too will be 39 by LA 28.

If Han Ying withdraws, I guess German women lose one singles member as the slot would automatically go to the next eligible player instead of Shan Xiaona. Also has their reserved player been announced? I guess it would be Winter but Kaufmann also makes sense as a lefty for teams.

EDIT: seems like it will be Kaufmann after all. Interestingly Liu Yangzi is not playing (not eligible I suppose) Also Swedish women only have 2 players entered???

Looks like there may be a mechanism for Shan Xiaona to play singles after all, since the system automatically selects the next eligible player after a qualified player 'declines'. Declines were made for Lay Jian Fang, WMY, WYD, and Miwa Harimoto. Not sure if the same rule applies for late withdrawals here, but it appears that all qualified teams automatically get two singles spots so Germany might still be entitled to one even if Han Ying withdraws.

No love for Sabine Winter, on the bench since 2010 but not even a P card after an early Solja retirement and last-minute injury withdrawal from Han Ying.

Solja, however, takes a pragmatic view of the Chinese intrusion. Despite admitting that she has benefited from the presence of Chinese-born players in the German national team – both her team-mates in the silver medal-winning team in the 2016 Olympics were born in China and she teamed up with China's Fang Bo to win a mixed doubles bronze in the World Table Tennis Championship last month – she doesn’t shy away from spelling out the lacunas.

“Our Chinese players (Han Ying and Shan Xiaona) are living for a long time in Germany and they also hold German passports. I understand that sometimes it's not so nice if you look at the European championships, of the top 16, 13 are born Chinese, so maybe it's boring for spectators,” Solja told

“But I always say, in five years we all have to be better than them. They are getting older and we need to improve. If they still would be ahead of us, it's our mistake. I can say positive things because I was always in the team and I practise with them and I could improve.”

Winter was the P-Altenate player for London 2012 and Rio 2016 (Amelie Solja for Beijing 2008 and Mittelham for Tokyo 2020). Solja was the WS player for Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.

The choice of Kaufmann and Wan Yuan is actually a good one. I would've turned down the offer if I were Winter (she probably did).

Sabine came back injured from the Rio contender and was barely able to walk. She is now picking up a racket again and I don´t think she could be in an acceptable condition for Paris.

It doesn´t seem like her to turn down an Olympic opportunity, even if being the substitute player again surely isn´t the most attractive option.

She seems like a really positive individual with exceptional athleticism that far exceeds the average table tennis professional. Unfortunately this isn't a sport that you can just brute force your way through so she'll probably have to work on things like touch, variation, and short game especially as age catches up. In any case it looks like she's still going to try for 2028.
