Has anyone had issues with flat hitting rather than spinning the ball?

It probably sounds the wrong way around but after a while out, I can still spin the ball no problem but am struggling with flat hitting, mainly on backhand. I'm not sure if it's a grip problem, feeling/touch missing or just technique. My backhand is a but wristy and and I can open against backspin and loop but flat hitting is almost impossible at the moment. I feel like I'm almost losing all control of my wrist when I try and the ball could go almost anywhere! It's a strange problem.

Occasionally, I notice I'm reaching out a bit far in front of me to try and hit so maybe that's it but if anyone has good tips to improve/develop a backhand punch I'd be grateful.

a friend of mine had this problem and we solved this with going back to the drive and learned to play a drive in mid distance. my friend never played a normal drive even in warmup and always spinned to ball up, so from there it was hard to learn to go more through the ball and hold the ball in the paddle, but now it works and even the normal topspins are more powerful now

with backhand, it is a common problem i see many people doing. you can try fix your wrist and after you learned the normal drive, you can try to spin the ball with your fixed wrist. i use this for counterdrive. if you developed feeling and speed in this way you can always add the wrist motion back in

it's probably a lack of practice. Just flat hit counter for an entire session and you'll get it. Then switch it up to spin based counter, and then challenge yourself to do 1 flathit counter, 1 spin counter, 1 flathit, etc... Warn your training partner beforehand that you're gonna do this so that they don't miss that much.

It’s all about timing the wrist action. Practice… practice… more practice…
