Naa, meeeh nothing new.

I think more phycological training is needed...

A coach should recognize that at least 50% of the game it in the head. One typical example was the Olympic match between WSQ and Truls. WCQ had just had his racket destroyed and it was fresh in his head and Truls had nothing to loose. In this game Truls had a much better state of mind, thats why he won the game, The same goes for most games. You have to add the head, TT is a mental game as much as a technical game. More so with the short 11 point sets....

And training Your head is way more difficult than training your technique. Of Course You can train your head by becoming more confident... But only up to a point.... In an even game its almost always the one that is in the best current phycological state that wins...

I wonder why Truls plays 2-3 world class brilliant strokes, but then he usually succumb to lower quality shots or bad movement or just not "being there". Maybe these coaches you refer to has had too big impact on him?

I realize there is a difference to coach a child, coach a veteran beginner, coach an amateur, a good player or coach an elite player.

But the concept to enhance your strengths bear a lot of weight, both in table tennis and in life.

enjoyable read and useful info, thanks!

it is a constant balance... i try to improve my backhand rallying skills but at same time when pressure is on i am looking for forehand third ball and follow-ups, while controlling and keeping ball on table from backhand side. more fun to be balanced though so i will keep trying to improve my weaknesses and once strong enough, incorporate the newer shots into my game.
