Togami beat Meng, for some reason, Ochenhausen plays a guy who defaults to Dima after winning the first point on serve, Kao Cheng Jui beats the younger Tiago Abiodun, and then Dima beats/destroys Togami.

Lots of talent in the Bundesliga this year, probably a benefit of Russian sanctions still prevailing.

Kanak beats both Franziska and Jorgic to lead his team over Saarbrucken!
such a waste that he wasn't able to play internationals these year + and then got a terrible seeding for Paris.
based on his ability, he should of had a better seeding

Yeah. But what he did to deserve it was serious so I do not entirely mind and he did have a good Olympics regardless as round of 16 is still easily a record for US men's singles.

other than north korea, Kanak had the worse build up to OG, a top 20 player seeding bottom 10 or something like that.
he could easily be top 15 seed and a clear path to QF and chance for medaling (if you look at all the QF spot Kanak could of taken....) he is that good.
record for USA, congratulation, but still, such a waste.

if it wasn't for his pingpod breach of ban, he probably would have 3 more months of playing time and build some WTT ranking points and had a better seed. His ban increased by 3 months due to taking part in some table tennis activity at pingpod for those who didn't know.
very sad to be honest with 2 breaches, which should all be avoided.

2028 he will be 28, and maybe his last olympic in terms of his peak performance.
at 24, he missed getting a medal, so all pressure now on LA 2028.

It was the coach that gave up after the first point because he had to fill in and knew he didn't stand a chance. They apologized, but fans still weren't happy afterwards and everyone that was there for the match has been offered a free ticket for their upcoming Pokal (cup) match.

I still don't get the rationale of throwing in a towel in this situation - unless the 'fill in guy' was really someone of very low level and the match would be a total massacre He'd probably be still interested in playing Dima, though, no?

Is the idea that some of this talent would've been playing in Russian league?

Thanks for the extra context. I watched the post match interviews and figured out it was the coach. He actually played the full match today VS Steger and got annihilated. Not sure what is ailing Gauzy on the bench. But the coach should have played the full match for sure.

Definitely. Dima was a staple of the league before the sanctions. You have to play for a country without any strong economic political affiliations to NATO to still be playing in Russia.

Gauzy had a minor surgery, but I don't know what for. EDIT: vossi beat me to it.

I don't know how good the coach is, but I haven seen a match live in the women's Bundesliga where two replacement players for the opposing team were so heavily outclassed (1000 TTR difference) that we didn't clap for won points because everyone knew this situation sucked and it would be a quick job.

Gauzy is still recovering from a surgery (which was done after the Olympics and they hoped to have him back sooner) and Calderano has some press appointents, so he is away as well. For me this looks like bad planning, but they assured the fans that there was no other way.
The line up with Togami, Calderano and Gauzy will be scary and I guess that is what they are using to pacify the fans. But all matches count lol.

There is a rule, that allows only one non EU player to be on the roster for a given game. So it is either Togami or Calderano, which makes Gauzy so essential for their planning.

In the German Forum, they claim the coach has around 1800 TTR, which means he has a win probability close to 0 against Ovtcharov and even against Steger it is not much higher
Oh, I misread the original post then - I thought there was a fill in player and then coach basically made a decision to pull the plug like in boxing. My bad...

I believe Calderano has dual citizenship (Portugal) but I could be wrong.

You are not wrong. Calderano has had portuguise citizenship since 2016, so a line-up of Togami, Calderano and Gauzy for a league and/or cup match would (technically) be possible. It's unlikely, however, that this line-up will be available on a regular basis. Too bad.
