I've been playing a 2100 long pips player. Our games are really close and often go long into deuces. But he has a "swipe" shot from his LP bh that is really hard to deal with.

Instead of pushing with his bh, he swipes quickly sideways-upwards. The ball then comes very fast and very dead. How should I handle this shot?

Spinwise its an mostly empty ball, depending on the spin you gave him. No matter the motion lp's can never put on significant spin. What makes it hard is, that there's only very little movement involved, so it's easy for him to disguise the direction he is playing in.

Against LP Blockers its important to only give them long balls, because they can easily control the direction due to insensitivity of spin. Shortballs give them a wide range they can play in,making it hard to react.

It depends on what shot you gave him previously, it can really only make the ball dead or reverse the spin, very limited in spin production. I use sideswipes extensively when I use anti. In fact, I view it as a safe attacking shot for my anti play. I have been in the other side (inverted vs LP) and you absolutely cannot push this ball - just loop it. If you push it, it will be an opportunity ball for the LP/anti because it is so easy to attack backspin with them.

Usually this situations arises when I push to his LP bh. He does the sideswipe hard to my fh corner usually.

I can't push it or it'll popup high. But I haven't been able to loop it either, its too fast and deep angle.

There was a really good video of somebody doing this shot on youtube, but I can't find it anymore.

Yeah this is pretty nasty, if you dont have good footwork youll be toast. But another thing to consider is the placement and quality of the push you gave him. If you pushed deep and fast to his wide BH there is no way he can sideswipe it very fast with wide angles to your deep FH. But if you pushed slow to some middle position yeah it opens up the opportunity for him to do this sideswipe attack to your wide FH for sure.

It's going to have some topspin, so I would try and loop it. Just watch the ball very carefully and don't loop too hard. As others have said already, if you do need to push, try and keep it deep, making it harder for him and reducing the angles he can get.

I never was able to hit a loop on this ball mainly because I didn't have enough time. The swipe ball was coming in too hard and fast. It's almost like a punch.

A few times I tried to lift it upwards with a open-face drive shot. These attempts usually just went straight into the net. The deadball was killing me.

i think i know the ball that you are talking about. When i play doubles and the LP player receives (while my partner serves long) the LP player uses this awkward non-ergonomical move side/upwards (basically building a wall/barrier with his bat) and the ball shoots in a straight line accross the table like a "shot", but without any significant spin. Too fast to easily loop, but not fast enough that you would be able to simply block if for it to return to the other side from its own power.
My suboptimal solution for this is to leap to the wide forehand (where he places the ball drifting to the side) and chopping it really hard. It will come back quite high (perhaps 50cm over the table) but with some backspin. If the opponent is not smashing it hard and just thinks he can counter it, it goes into the net.
