I feel that Dignics 05 is extremely overrated. Is it just me?

I'm perplexed that so many people love Dignics 05 and many think it is the #1 rubber out there.

I don't like it at all.

My issues with it:

- It is the most unforgiving rubber I've ever used, and I've used every high-end Tenergy/Dignics rubber. One slight technique error and the ball goes flying. It forces me to play uptight, with the pressure of having to hit every ball with perfect form. Going from Dignics05 to Dignics80, which I believe is a much better rubber in every way, allowed me to relax and play more loosely. Dignics 80 is so much more forgiving than Dignics 05. What a sense of relief going from D05 to D80.
- The short trajectory makes it impossible to play far from the table. My Backhand gets blocked off even from mid distance. The short trajectory makes the rubber only effective when looping/countering close to the table. Even from mid distance, I get blocked off.
- The sensitivity to incoming spin is a real problem. This is right up there with Tenergy 05 in terms of sensitivity to incoming spin.
- Touching short is difficult with this rubber; it is difficult to keep the ball low. I don't have this problem with other Tenergy/Dignics rubbers.

I remember when Tenergy 05 first came out, there was a guy who used to use Andro Hexer and said he couldn't use Tenergy 05 and that he got more spin out of Hexer. He later switched to Tenergy 05 Hard when that came out, and also later switched blades.

I have used Dignics 05 for a few months now - it produces higher quality offense than Dignics 80, in terms of spin and speed combination when the ball is spun aggressively. Dignics 80 blocks better and also counters well, and I can see why a player would prefer it at any level, but I can also see why a player would prefer Dignics 05 because Dignics 80 doesn't have the offensive ability for countering that Dignics 05 has, not the same quality on loop drives.

The sensitivity of Dignics 05 to spin is not special if you are aggressive on almost every stroke. It actually allows for slightly more passive play than Tenergy 05. Dignics 05 rewards the player who wants to have active control at or close to the table, just a bit more than Tenergy 05.

As the short trajectory making it impossible to play far from the table, this is down to your technique. I suspect you are someone who doesn't play on top of the ball almost all the time.

I feel like my only complaint about D05 is weird throw angle after T05/D09C and fast rebound speed from the rubber. I have a feeling that the ball doesn't sink into the sponge like on t05 or d09c and just immediately flies off the rubber, so you have to be more mindful of the angle of your racket a lot more

and what is your level? 1200? 1400? 1600?
I know Harimoto is 1800 and he can use Dignic so maybe he's better.

D05 needs more racket speed than T05 because of the harder sponge. It's got more grip than T05 but less than a hybrid or H3, so it's possible to get the worst of both worlds if you're not getting the ball to sink in enough on contact.

Hmmm... let's just say that all 3 rubbers play similarly (spinny with high arc) but yet differently enough (sponge hardness, ball release/tackiness) that that a player should not like all three equally but should notice clear differences that make one clearly better or one clearly worse than the others for his playing style. I would go so far as to argue that a player who switches from one to another should go through an adjustment period of sorts and then decide which they prefer but is unlikely to say "hey. I replaced X with Y and I play exactly the same way and I enjoy X and Y equally" after adapting to X or Y (almost never both).

If you invest some time to learn:

1) short stroke topspins on both wings, with massive spin production from finger action and most of the movement coming from body alone. Not retreating to mid distance and doing relaxed looping.

2) proper short push and block technique where you rob momentum to the sides using the body

3) aggressive serve receive, ie chiquita, flicks, angled long push and sideswipes

You will get a lot better at using D05 (and table tennis in general).

if you can short push sidetopspin serves (both pendulum and reverse) low and short with D05, you can short push with any setup. D05 is unforgiving but it is an opportunity to hone your technique.

I really quite like it. It has a great feeling of speed, control, and stability.

But it is overrated in the sense that it isn't really all that much better than G1 or something.

Myth: D05 is the best rubber out there.
Fact: D09C is. You dispute this argument? Fine, I do not want to really say it but the truth is actually T05H.

Myth: I cannot play D05, is it me?
Fact: Yes, it is you.

Myth: D80 is better.
Fact: 80 who....?

I remember one of the first reviews for T05 said 'great rubber for beginners, i doubt pros will like it much' or something to that effect.

I've been using a $5 unboosted rubber this week and it's fantastic.

Yes you’re the only one being overrated. Substract 200 points to your current USTTA rating to get to your true level

However, if you DO play with D05 you don’t need to do that

You’re welcome

Some rubbers work better for certain players and styles...
Butterfly series Tenergy and Dignics series are good rubbers overall used by a large number of players.
The volume of users speak for itself.
Does it work for everyone ... no I don't think so.
If it's not for you it's all good.
I know players who are very strong who use it and also lesser players who enjoy the feeling.
I'm guessing it just doesn't work for you.
D80 seems to from your sig profile.

The Butterfly flavour of 09C, D05 or D80 is a very standard combo I think for alot of players now. Harder on the forehand and more active speed on the backhand.

The better you play, the better quality equipment you need and vice versa. This is because faster and more grippy rubber can create more speed and spin, but it also reacts more to incoming spin and you need to be able to counter it. The Dignics series is designed for experienced amateurs and professionals. For intermediate level amateurs, Butterfly has developed Glayzer and Glayzer 09C, which forgive more mistakes and are much easier to play.
Try this and maybe it will make your game easier and more fun. If you don't want Glayzer, I would recommend Nittaku Fastarc G1. Very good grippy linear rubber that is equally good for spinning and blocking, which also is very durable.

The skill of the opening Poster probably plays a large role but dima also mentioned in his 09c review with Dan that 05 is more spin sensitive than 09c and that you need to be more precise with adjusting the bat angle to spin.
