For the very first time in my life, I played a antispin player, and he just happens to be 2150 USATT and the best non-coach guy in our club. I actually did fairly well and got 2-3 against him. One of the games that I won I dominated 11-1. I had 2 things that worked in my favor: 1) I had a fair amount of experience playing against LP, so I wasn't totally unprepared 2) He is left handed so his "trouble" side goes to my FH.

If not for these 2 factors, I would've gotten destroyed.

However, I still find that his Antispin plays differently from the LP. I can't quite pinpoint exactly what is different, but it is somehow a bit different.

Can somebody explain the difference in playing LP and Anti? Especially how do these 2 rubbers respond differently to incoming topspin and underspin?

Which one produces more friction when chopping? Which one produces more "reversal" spin?

From my experience the antispin ball doesnt kick as much but it kind of slips a bit so it’s more dead with pace, I think long pips can definitely create more reverse spin and a little topspin with some shots. I haven’t really seen people be able to create so much topspin with anti. Just my experience from the people I have played

There's anti and then there's anti. They can play very differently depending on sponge and topsheet. EG: 804 just kills spin and produces a dead ball or a tiny bit of spin. Something slicker, like yasaka anti power, will have reversal. Less sponge / harder sponge / slicker topsheet can mean more reversal. But it also depends on how long the player holds the ball during the stroke, EG: whether he brushed and held the ball or hit / touched the ball briefly. The blade also can affect dwell and therefore affect the reversal. A chopping blade will have less reversal than a 10mm balsa carbon. So you really need to adjust to the player at the time, there is no one standard behaviour of these rubbers.

The only thing in common is that they are mostly slower when attacking compared to LP. You need a big swing to get even medium speed. 804 is fast, using a normal 729 sponge. Gigant is unbelievably slow, but most antis are just normally slow. Therefore they are mostly used for defence and less for attacking compared to LP.

It depends if it was "grippy" anti or frictionless anti. The grippy antis (like Nittaku Best Anti) can produce either dead balls, particularly when blocking, or can preserve some of the spin (reverse it in some jargon) you can even kind of loop underpin balls with it using the incoming underpin to put topspin on the ball. The frictionless antis, though they vary a bit, primarily give you back whatever spin you put on the ball, often with little pace. So they can be similar to long pips (which also vary a lot) though can be quite different.

How complicated.

He likes to refer to his bh rubber as "trouble maker". At first i thought that was the name of the rubber. But i think he just enjoys the ide of the opponent being confused by the rubber

Very important to know if it was a grippy anti or a slick anti. They only have in common the name ! Slippery anti is like the one used by Luka Mladenovic, on topspin block with it and you're cooked because too much spin reversal. Incredible spin reversal.

Grippy anti on the other hand, is a bit like a slow dead inverted rubber. You give back mostly dead slow ball, you can accelerate some ball like a short pips with sink effect and you're not affected by the opponent spin since the grip is low. Not a lot of spin reversal, unless you chop block.

@TensorBackhand give this a look :) it might provide more information on how different it is

haha. I watched the video, but it seems like Anti behaves pretty similarly to LP. It's just giving that "reversal" spin every time.

Hehe, I just know he calls the rubber "trouble maker". I didn't check what actual rubber it is.

But I think it might have been a Dr Neubauer?

Ittf did impose limits on anti rubbers. The glassy materials got forbidden as producing randomness of the bounce too oftentimes.

-----------
Be happy all

I immediately thought of the Denver based anti player, a tallish dude with Indian heritage and KNOWS how to play the sport. You see him in a lot of big tourneys, he gets around.

His anti shots, just didn't come to you as much as you calculate and you are striking too far in front of zone making errors or soft plays.

You seem like you know a lot of players. You don't have a youtube channel that posts match videos of lots of local players do you?

My favorite anti player in the USA is Amir Khan - has absolutely no forehand, not that high rated, but plays with some of the best touch you will ever see from an anti player. Has a wonderful mood and laugh and says his only goal is to make the opponent scratch their head. If they do that, he has achieved his goal for the day lol.

Hi TB,

No youtube channel.

You be in the sport long enough, play enough tourneys, make enough friends, and get around, you will be surprised at how many and who you end up knowing. (and how easy it is to get along with so many)

What is good is that many learned as adult, so had to fail and struggle, so you do not see as many arrogant types.

I have prolly been at the same tourney as Vinay at least ten times it seems.

NL, Carl, MaTT and the East Coast Goon Squad got to know me the short few years I was based there. The friends add up quick.

Every other tourney it seems someone I do not know identifies themself as someone who knows me as Der_Echte from TTD. So I guess TTD participation helps too.
