So that's why "WTT Cup Finals" was changed to "WTT Finals".

https://documents.ittf.sport/sites/default/files/public/2023-07/2023-03-17_EB_Minutes_p.pdf
7.1.9.5. World Cups
The EB noted the report from Mr DAINTON on the business model being prepared. The aim
is to host already some World Cups in 2023.
Mr MAEHARA informed Japan is considering hosting the World Cup in December 2024.

https://documents.ittf.sport/sites/default/files/public/2023-08/2023-05-22_28_EB_Minutes_p.pdf
4. CEO Report / Strategic Plan

...

Mr DAINTON brought attention to the last point of his presentation, the World Cups. It was noted
that efforts were being made to bring back the World Cups. It was noted that the World Cups
were part of the Master Licensing Agreement (“MLA”) with WTT. The EB was asked to amend
the MLA and remove the licensing of the World Cups to WTT from the MLA so that they can be
managed differently.
20230522-EB-02
The Executive Board approved the amendment to the MLA to remove the World Cups as a licensed
event to WTT.
Mr DAINTON noted that there is some work to be done to the ITTF Statutes with respect to
reinstating the World Cups, as well as considerations for what the World Cups should look like
in the future, management of the event and qualification process, as well as a potential change
to create a mixed team World Cup to differentiate the event from a World Team Championship
event.

Singapore Smash 2024 is listed on STTA's calendar as 3/7-17, but take it with a grain of salt seeing the WTTC 2024 is listed as 2/13-24.

https://www.stta.org.sg/news/calendar-of-events/?full=1&long_events=1&ajaxCalendar=1&mo=3&yr=2024
Back on the WTT calendar now as 3/10-17. U15 and U19 events added. How is that different from the Opens?

Singapore Smash, one of World Table Tennis’ marquee events, will once again bring together the best athletes in the world for an exhilarating spectacle of table tennis excellence. The 2024 edition at the Singapore Sports Hub, will also feature for the very first time a WTT Youth Series event and Para Smash showcase to highlight the universality of the sport and elevate the fan experience.

...

In addition to the expansion of the event, the player and fan experience will be improved with main draw action now taking place over eight enthralling days with Sunday 10 March seeing the 64-player men’s and women’s singles and 24-pair men’s, women’s and mixed doubles competitions getting underway. Singles qualifying will shift to a Thursday start and Saturday finish, giving fans the chance to see players fight to earn their place in the main draw on the final day of qualifying.

...

For the first time at a WTT Series event, fans will also be able to see the stars of the future. As part of WTT’s commitment to establishing the Day One to World Number One playing pathway, Singapore Smash 2024 will see the introduction of a WTT Youth Series event.

WTT Youth Star Contender Singapore, the top tier event within the WTT Youth Series, will take place over the final four days of Singapore Smash 2024 (14-17 March) and provide Singapore’s rising stars and the world’s best U15 and U19 players with the opportunity to challenge their peers in the same venue where their heroes are battling it out for the elusive Singapore Smash crown.

The WTT Youth Star Contender finals matches will take place on the Infinity ∞ Arena prior to the Singapore Smash singles finals and with USD15,000 in prize money on offer — the stars of the future will be looking to make history by winning the first WTT Youth Series event to be played in Singapore.

Singapore Smash fans will also be treated to world-class Para Table Tennis action with the inclusion of a Singapore Para Smash showcase. The three-day event offering USD29,500 prizemoney, will feature 12-player (men’s and women’s) combined standing class 6 and 7 singles competitions played in a round-robin format with three group winners and the best group runner-up advancing to the elimination semifinals.

Showcase participation will be determined via world ranking for the first 11 players and one wildcard position reserved for a male and female athlete selected by the host.

Matches for the Singapore Para Smash will be played across the Infinity ∞ Arena and competition tables in Hall 2 at OCBC Arena starting on Tuesday 12 March and culminating with the finals on the Infinity ∞ Arena on Thursday 14 March.

The World Cup gives China a chance to firm its rankings for its Olympic selections.

Thankfully, this sounds like a very different event from the old one, though I kinda liked the old one because it gave the minnows a chance to mix with the whales and sharks.

US$ 1 million in prize money...

https://www.ittf.com/2024/03/01/mac...e-of-ittf-singles-world-cups-return-in-april/
Get ready to witness the exhilarating revival of the ITTF Singles World Cups! Mark your calendars from April 15th to 21st, 2024, as the world’s finest table tennis talents converge for an electrifying showdown with a USD 1 million prize money.

The decision to resurrect the ITTF World Cups underscores the ITTF’s strategic vision and unwavering dedication to revitalizing the sport’s illustrious heritage. With the centenary celebrations approaching in 2026, this initiative embodies the ITTF’s commitment to infusing iconic events with renewed energy and excitement.

Who’s In: A total of 48 players will earn coveted spots in the Singles World Cup lineup. Forty-four players will qualify through the Continental Cups or World Ranking, with up to two host association players receiving nominations. Member Associations can enter up to four players each, excluding the reigning World Champion and U19 World Champion, who secure automatic qualification.

Innovation at its Finest: True to its tradition of innovation, the ITTF promises a tournament experience like never before. Since its inception in 1980 in Hong Kong, China, the World Cup format has evolved while maintaining its core principle: assembling the sport’s elite from every corner of the globe for a fierce competition.

Get ready for an electrifying experience with a new playing system. The action kicks off with Stage 1, where players are divided into 16 groups of 3, engaging in intense round-robin battles. The top-ranked players lead the charge in each group, while the rest are drawn in using a modified snake system, ensuring every match is a showdown of skill and strategy. To keep the competition fierce and fair, players from the same association are pitted against different groups, and matches will be 4 games (result 4-0, 3-1, or 2-2).

The ultimate goal? Securing that top spot of the group to advance to the knockout draw of Stage 2. Here, it’s every player for themselves as they vie for victory in a heart-pounding battle of wits and athleticism. With matches escalating to the best of seven games, fans can expect nothing short of edge-of-your-seat excitement.

Where the Action Unfolds: Prepare to be mesmerized at the Galaxy Arena, the premier indoor venue in Macao, China. This cutting-edge arena will blend the world of table tennis with entertainment, delivering an unprecedented spectacle for spectators worldwide.

Stay tuned for more updates as the countdown to the ITTF Singles World Cups 2024 begins. Don’t miss your chance to witness history in the making as table tennis stars vie for glory on the grandest stage of them all!
